Khao Lak is located just 100 km north of the popular Phuket, and unlike its neighbor is famous for its calm and relaxed atmosphere. This resort is one of the pearls of Thailand: 20 km of beautiful sandy beaches, clear sea, palm trees with swings, and next to it are hills and mountains covered with jungle, and a national park. Khao Lak is also chosen as a convenient base point for traveling to neighboring islands - Similans, Surins, Khao Sok and Khao Lak national parks, Phang Nga Bay and many other places.

Today we will tell you in detail about this resort and what you can do here: beaches, excursions, hotels, activities and other useful information.

By the way, all our articles about the country can be read in the section.

Description Khao Lak

Khao Lak is perfect for those who want some privacy and tranquility, families with children and couples in love. But lovers of club and night entertainment will not find anything to do here. And in the low season (from April to November), the resort is generally empty.

First of all, I would like to note that Khao Lak is called the entire region with a length of 20 km from south to north, although the area near Mount Lak has such a name. The rest is a few resort villages along the coast. Here are their names from south to north:

Bang La On (Bang La On)

This village is considered the center of Khao Lak with a developed infrastructure: hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, massage parlors and everything that a tourist might need. If you are coming here by bus, then by default this place will be considered the final stop where you will be taken, and if you need to get off in another village, say so. When booking a hotel, check its exact location.

The bus stop is located next to the supermarket, from there there is a road to the beach.

Road to Bang Niang Beach

Bang Niang (Bang Niang)

Literally 2 km to the north is the village of Bang Niang, a less touristy and more peaceful place, the only active place of which is the market on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The center of the village is the 7-11 store, from which there is a road to the beach.

Sunset at Bang Niang

Khuk Khak (Khuk Khak)

Khuk Khuk is a very quiet "Thai" place. There is a small bus station and a market here. and there are very few people on the beach.

Khao Lak suffered more than other places in Thailand from the devastating tsunami of 2004, when giant waves hit the coast, killing thousands of people. After this incident, there is a modern warning system that has been tested in Indonesia and has shown excellent results.

Climate in Khao Lak

There are 2 seasons: dry (November to March) and rainy (April to October). As elsewhere, during the rainy season, the cost of everything falls, you can bargain for a significant discount, but on the New Year and Christmas, on the contrary, the peak season and prices are higher for everything.

The dry season is best for traveling, especially if you are going to the Similan Islands, because trips there are canceled during the rainy season. In general, the region is quite humid and there is a lot of precipitation.

How to get there?

It is most convenient to get to Khao Lak from Phuket, but it is also possible from Bangkok, because the bulk of flights from Russia arrive in the capital.

Khao Lak - Phuket

The nearest airport to Khao Lak is located in Phuket, 80 km away. Direct charter flights from Russia fly to Phuket, you can also get there with a transfer in Bangkok.

A taxi from the airport to Khao Lak will cost from 1700 to 2000 baht, and the journey takes one hour.

Alternatively, contact your hotel in advance and arrange to be picked up.

It will be much cheaper to take the bus. From Phuket Airport, you first need to get to any bus station or just to a stop on route 4. Buses run from the bus station to Bangkok, Ranong, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Takua Pa and along the way they pass Khao Lak. The bus fare is 100 baht, the journey takes 2 hours.

Paradise places!

Khao Lak — Bangkok

From Bangkok, it is best to take a bus to Phuket at the southern bus station and say that you need to Khao Lak. Usually the transfers are at night, and if you sit down late in the evening in Bangkok, you will be there in the morning. The second option is to take a bus to Surat Thani, and then transfer to a bus to Khao Lak.

You can also get by train to Surat Thani, choosing a night crossing, and from there take a bus to Phuket, which passes Khao Lak. In total, such a journey will take 14 hours and can be quite cheap if you take a ticket to the 3rd class carriage, but do not expect comfort. Or take a ticket to a recumbent car, but the cost will be comparable to the bus, which in my opinion is preferable.

Khao Lak beaches

People come to the resort primarily to the beaches, and Khao Lak certainly boasts of them! More than 20 km of beautiful sandy beaches, many of which are very few people. Conventionally, all of them can be divided into southern, central and northern parts. The central part is the most active with good infrastructure, but on the northern and southern parts the beaches are completely wild, rarely where you will find cafes or sun loungers - perfect for lovers of peace.

South Beach also called Khao Lak beach, as the village of the same name is nearby. It is located south of the cape and Mount Lac, and just not far from here is the entrance to the national park. The length of the beach is about 2 km, there are several cafes, exchangers, very quiet and peaceful.

Nang Thong and Sunset Beach located opposite the village of Bang La On - the most popular and active beaches of Khao Lak. In the village you will find many guesthouses and hotels, restaurants and cafes, massage parlors, money changers and even Mc’Donalds. The beach makes a good impression: there is a shade from palm trees and trees, the sand is medium, the water is clear, and the entrance to the sea is not sharp, but not very gentle either. And there are not so many people, considering that this is the busiest place on Khao Lak. And there are also swings hanging on trees, so a great photo shoot against the backdrop of the azure sea is guaranteed!

On Nang Thong beach

Bang Niang beach is located opposite the village of the same name, a couple of kilometers north of Nang Thong. There are already fewer people here, but the tourist infrastructure is quite well developed: there are tour agencies, massage, bars, restaurants, and at the turn from the main road to the beach there is a 7-11 store. There are many luxurious hotels and restaurants on Bang Niang Beach - we even took a special walk around the territory of one of the villas, it's gorgeous!

Bang Niang beach

Khuk Khak beach located even further north and is one of the quietest and most peaceful. There are only a few hotels and resorts, and palm plantations around - it's nice to ride a bike or bicycle. The tourist infrastructure is poorly developed, everything is limited to specific hotels.

Pakarang beach located a little to the north, not far from Cape Pakarang, the westernmost point of Thailand. A good place for walking and snorkeling, there are a lot of corals in the sea, but for a classic beach holiday it is better to choose another place.

Pak Weeb beach adjoins Cape Pakarang. An excellent uncrowded beach with light sand and swings in the trees. There are several luxurious hotels and villas around.

White Sand Beach

Real bounty!

Bang Sak beach the northernmost of Khao Lak's beaches and one of the quietest and longest. There are several local cafes and several expensive hotels here.

Khao Lak attractions, tours, excursions and activities

Khao Lak is very conveniently located in relation to the nearest interesting places, and good trips can be organized from here.

Police boat 813. At a distance of 2 km from the coast there is a boat that was brought here by the 2004 tsunami. It was decided not to remove it anywhere and leave it in place. All the people in it died, as did many others on the shore. Now, work is underway to create a museum, but for now there are just a few stands with photographs of those events.

Waterfalls, elephant rides, Muay Thai can also be found in the Khao Lak area.

Khao Sok National Park Considered one of the most beautiful parks in Thailand and located just an hour from Khao Lak. There you can spend the night in houses on the water on Lake Cheow Lan, swim there in a boat or kayak. In general, the park offers a lot of active entertainment: rafting, trekking through the jungle, elephant riding, visiting waterfalls, caves and much more. The "highlight" of the park is the Rafflesia flower - the largest on earth with a diameter of one meter and a weight of 10 kg.

Kao Lak National Park - Lam Ru. In the park you can see the real jungle with huge trees and wildlife: marvelous birds, monkeys, gibbons and Asian bears also live here. The park office is located on the cape, south of the village of Bang La On.

Hermit crab on the shore

Similan and Surin Islands ideal place for diving, very rich and varied underwater world! Transparent sea, perfect beaches and jungle - paradise. The territory of the islands is a national park, and Khao Lak is the most convenient point for traveling to these islands.

Among the activities, of course, diving, snorkeling and surfing are popular.

All excursions in Khao Lak can be booked at any travel agency, where you will be offered a large selection of trips.

Khao Lak hotels

Good hotels can be found along the coast of Khao Lak. As a rule, accommodation prices in central Bang La On are slightly more expensive than in Bang Niang. The most luxurious hotels, such as Mariott and Pullman, are located in the northern part.

Thailand is visited annually by millions of visitors from all over the world, with the result that during the high season the most popular resorts are filled with tourists. But on Khao Lak you can spend a vacation among the healing silence for the soul.

Khao Lak on the map of Thailand

The name "Khao Lak" used to be small village located on the coast of the bay. As tourism began to develop in the area, the name began to cover several settlements.

The convenient location allowed the settlements to eventually become a single resort complex.

High mountains block Khao Lak from ocean waters, the climate in the settlement is warm. The holiday season starts in November and ends in May. At the height of the rest, the weather is dry and warm, the temperature indicators are kept at around twenty-eight degrees.

At the same time, there is no feeling of sultry hell, because tourists are constantly blown by a light breeze.

Between May and October the resort is unfit for relax. At that time:

  • are spilling heavy rains;
  • raging on the sea storms;
  • settlement overcomes heatwave combined with high humidity;
  • do not carry out popular excursions that are tied to the season.

Experienced travelers who value peace and solitude, on the contrary, choose this time to relax. Prices for accommodation in good hotels are lower; you don’t meet crowds of other vacationers on a walk. If the hotel has a comfortable swimming pool, a spa complex, and the room has air conditioning, you can have a great rest on vacation, regardless of the rainy weather.

Most often, buses run at night, so in the morning you will arrive at the hotel. The second suggestion implies a transfer: take a bus to Surat Thani, and then to Khao Lak.

A cheaper option for traveling to the desired city is a trip by train. At night, take a train to Surat Thani, purchasing a ticket for a third-class carriage (conveniences not promised). Travel time will be fourteen hours.

Upon arrival at your destination, continue your journey by bus to Phuket, passing Khao Lak.

Two beaches called Nang Thong and Bang Niang are fully equipped for relaxing near the water. The most visited is the first beach. Near Nang Tonga there are a sufficient number of affordable hotels and small restaurants where you can satisfy your hunger. Children will be delighted with the marine life moving along the coast: turtles and crabs.

The Crystal Sea will allow you to see exotic fish swimming in their own waters in a businesslike way. The south side of Nang Tong is famous among travelers as "Sunset Beach". A stunning sea sunset is in the photo of every tourist who has rested here.

Second equipped beach Bang Niang great for families with children. On its territory are:

Travelers who prefer a relaxing holiday in solitude choose beaches Khao Lak and Pakwip. The first recreation area is not equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers, but tall trees cast a good shadow. The nature of this place does not let go, you can admire it endlessly. Tourists have a rest right on the white sand.

On the beach Pakwip you won't find company. It is chosen because of the proximity of comfortable hotels of the highest class and the monastery of Baan Pakwip.

The separation of the beaches is very conditional, the entire coastal area is at the disposal of vacationers. You can stretch out on the sand at any time of the year. During the stormy season, the beaches are hidden behind large reefs, so even at this time tourists indulge water activities: diving and snorkeling.

Cognitive tourism with photos

In Khao Lak, you can spend time not only for the benefit of the soul, but also get food for the mind by visiting and getting to know the local nature.

Main attractions

Basically, all the attractions in the resort are created by nature. There are few interesting places created by man. Those wishing to get acquainted with the culture of the Thais visit the famous Buddhist Padungtampotivas temple. And you can also visit the Chinese temple, which is noticeably different in appearance from Thai shrines.

Chao Por Khao Lak Shrine- translated as "guardian of Khao Lak". This is a statue of a seated man, who is believed to be the patron saint of the resort and protects it from all evil. A separate small temple was built for him, located near the Lampu National Park.

Some guests pay tribute to those killed in the tsunami by visiting the police boat, which stands as a memorial to the victims of the disaster.

Nature

There are many natural places to visit. Tourists must visit Khao Sok National Park, where they relax by Cheow Lan Lake, and go for a walk to the waterfalls. ) »»» What to choose, Phuket or Khao Lak?

If you are choosing where it is better to go to Phuket or Khao Lak, then the first thing to keep in mind is that the cost of living in Phuket and Khao Lak is about the same, and a trip to these tourist centers will cost you approximately one and the same money.

Features of Phuket and Khao Lak

If we leave aside the exact calculation of the budget, there are, perhaps, only two fundamental differences between Phuket and Khao Lak.

The first of them concerns the lifestyle, and the second - the visual range that will appear before your eyes in Phuket and Khao Lak.

Khao Sok National Park (Khao Sok), one of the largest national parks in Thailand with an area of 739 square meters. km., located on the isthmus separating the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

The distance from Khao Sok to the nearest point of the Andaman coast, Takua Pa, is approximately 50 km., to the nearest point of the Gulf of Thailand, Surat Thani, approximately 120 km. The distance from Khao Sok to Khao Lak and Phuket is 80 and 140 km, respectively. The most famous and most extraordinary attraction of the Khao Sok National Park is the Cheow Lan mountain lake, a place of amazing and.....

Si Phang-Nga National Park, sometimes referred to as Sri Phang-Nga, is located on Route 4 (Phuket - Bangkok), halfway between Takua Pa and Khuraburi. The distance from Si Phang-Nga National Park to the nearest major tourist centers, Khao Lak and Phuket, is 50 km. and 110 km., respectively.

Unlike the more widely known Khao Sok, Si Phang-Nga National Park is not one of those places where you should stop for a few days. By and large, to see all the sights of the national park, Tam Nang waterfall and the backwaters located next to the waterfall, chosen by countless flocks of fish, .....

Khao Lak National Park (Khao Lak - Lam Ru) is the closest national park to the tourist center of the same name. It is a mountain range that dominates the surrounding area and forms the unique landscapes of Khao Lak.

The national park has a rather complex shape and consists of two parts: located near the coast of the mountains, which gave the name to the entire surrounding area, and the Lam Ru mountains located in the depths of the mainland. Despite the fact that the mountains of the national park are visible from anywhere in Khao Lak, tourists see only a small part of the national park, the size of which is very impressive. Suffice it to say that.....

National Park Khao Lampi - Hat Thai Mueang, located next to the main transport artery of the south of Thailand, route number 4 (Phuket - Bangkok), at a distance of 30 km. south of Khao Lak. The distance between Khao Lampi - Hat Thai Mueang National Park and the northern border of Phuket (Sarasin Bridge) is also 30 km. As can be clearly seen from its name, this national park consists of two parts, coastal (Hat Thai Mueang beach) and mountainous (Hao Lampi hill) located inland.

It should be noted that Khao Lampi - Hat Thai Mueang National Park is not one of the most outstanding national parks in Thailand, and.....
