A bit of history

The Novodevichy Convent was founded in 1524 by Prince Vasily the Third in honor of the capture of Smolensk. This story has a second side: the monastery was founded after the dissolution of the prince's marriage, and he intended to exile his wife Solomonia here.

Initially, the monastery was wooden, but even then the walls and towers were admired for their beauty and height. The monastery is located in the bend of the Moscow River, guarding the crossing. The nuns did not participate in the battles; if necessary, detachments of archers were equipped here. Stone walls with towers were built at the end of the 16th century.

Many noble women took tonsure here, the property of each of them passed to the monastery. As a result, the monastery became very rich and powerful. At the beginning of the 17th century, the monastery was burned down, and under Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov it was completely restored. It was then that it turned into a place of royal pilgrimage.

Under Sofya Alekseevna, active construction was going on in this territory, almost the entire architectural ensemble was erected. In Soviet times, the monastery did not function, but today it is a functioning Orthodox monastery, combined with a museum exposition.

What to see in the monastery

Today the monastery is a real fortress with impregnable high walls, towers with loopholes. On the territory of the complex are located:

  • Smolensk Cathedral built in 1525 with numerous icons. It is here that you can bow to the miraculous icon of the Smolensk Mother of God.
  • The bell tower, the oldest bell of which was cast under Ivan the Terrible.
  • Dormition Church with the ancient miraculous Iberian Icon of the Mother of God.
  • Ambrose Church, combined with a refectory.
  • The Filatiev School, where orphan girls studied under Peter I.
  • Hospital for veterans of the Russian army.

There is also an almshouse, as well as the chambers of famous women who spent some time in the monastery. In total there are 12 towers, of which four are round and 8 are square.

Important! You can make a wish and touch the Nadprudnaya Tower to make it come true. Princess Sophia was once imprisoned in this tower.

Near the monastery there is a park located on the banks of the Bolshoi Novodevichy Pond. Its paths offer amazing views of the monastery towers and walls. Many artists work here, trying to capture one of the best Moscow landscapes.

You can get to the Novodevichy Convent quite quickly by public transport. It is most convenient to drive a few stops from the Sportivnaya metro station, but buses, minibuses and trolleybuses also run from other stations.

Holy Mother Matrona of Moscow was born in Russia in the last century completely blind, but this did not prevent her from becoming known for her God's gifts to the whole world and helping Orthodox Christians with prayer and advice. Hello everyone, today I want to tell you how to get to the Matrona Monastery in Moscow. I think there is no need to tell who the holy Matrona is, all Orthodox people know her, and especially her role in our country and the miracles she performed. Guests of the capital are very often interested in the question of how to visit the Pokrovsky Convent, where cancer with the relics of the Matrona of Moscow. Below you will find detailed instructions on how to get there, as well as several interesting videos that tell the history of the temple and who Matronushka is..

Intercession Convent of the Holy Matrona of Moscow

For pilgrims, the Pokrovsky Convent of the Holy Matrona of Moscow is a rather favorite place to visit, when I was in Moscow for the first time, I also wanted to get there, but at that time no one on the Internet spoke in detail how to get there.

Address of the Pokrovsky Monastery st. Taganskaya 58

And so the most convenient way to get there, especially in Moscow, is the metro. You will be interested in two stations

  • Marxist
  • Taganskaya

Why am I bringing both stations, since they are very close, and sometimes it happens that the exit to the city at one of them may be closed due to repairs.

From Taganskaya station

Consider the path from the Taganskaya metro station, it is located a little further from the Matrona Monastery, but its advantage is that it is located on the ring, which is easier to get to.

And so you exit the Taganskaya metro station and immediately turn right. There will be an avenue in front of you, 10 meters from the metro you need to cross several pedestrian crossings towards McDonald's, which will be on your left.

We go forward and you go out onto Taganskaya Street, we need it.

And here is how the Taganskaya station looks from afar.

From the Marxist station

The Marxist station is closer, since when you leave it you immediately go out onto Taganskaya street. So.

Leaving the metro station, you get into the underpass, turn left and go up. Coming out of the metro, you will have the landmark Tagansky Passage on the right, and on the opposite side of the metro is McDonald's.

Coming out of the metro, we go to the right, so that the Tagansky passage is on the left.

Also at the bus stop you can see barkers who offer you to get to the Pokrovsky Convent of the Holy Matrona, do not sit down to them, as there are only 3 stops to go and it is better to pass them by public transport, using the same card as the metro, you will get cheaper, since these hucksters will cost 80 rubles.

After walking a little more than a kilometer, you will see the red walls of the monastery on your right hand.

On the walls you can see the image of the Holy Matrona

Entering the first gate you will see a sign with the address of the Pokrovsky Monastery, Taganskaya 58.

Inside the Pokrovsky Monastery of the Moscow Matrona

And so we go into the territory of the monastery and in front of you will be a beautiful yellow temple.

On the left you will see a small chapel with the image of the Matrona, with stands of her history. You can also buy a bottle of holy water here.

On the right you will see a huge queue to the icon, which is asked for help with infertility. There is a huge amount of evidence of the miraculous help of the Matrona, which helped the needy and desperate find a baby, helped the birth go smoothly and the baby was born healthy.

On the right side you will see a small white building where you can collect holy water.

Here's what the water taps look like.

walking forward you will see a huge cross, usually the line to the relics of Matrona is far behind this cross, but in winter, there are fewer people.

I think you now know how to get to the Matrona Monastery in Moscow.
