Tourist map of Montenegro

Montenegro map

Montenegro occupies a place on the world map on the western coast of the Balkan Peninsula, washed by the Adriatic Sea. This state of southeastern Europe borders Bosnia and Herzegovina in the northwest, Serbia in the northeast, Kosovo in the east, Albania in the southeast, and the border with Croatia runs along the western part of the country.

The Montenegro map explains the fact that this country is often called the Eastern European Riviera - the length of the coastline is about 300 km, of which 70 km are local beaches. The Arrivo guide will tell you which region is best to choose for a beach holiday, and where to explore historical monuments or nature reserves. Among the natural attractions, the Bay of Kotor, Lake Skadar, as well as the Budva Riviera, where the main resorts of the country are concentrated, deserve the greatest attention.

The most significant cities and resorts on the map of Montenegro are Budva, Sveti Stefan, Becici, Bar, Tivat, Kotor, Herceg Novi. The largest cities are Podgorica and Niksic. The country also includes 14 islands.

The main natural areas on the map of Montenegro are the coastal part along the Adriatic Sea from Herceg Novi to the mouth of the Boyana River, mountain ranges and the valley of Lake Skadar, which includes the valley of the Zeta River, Niksic field and the Belopavlica plain.

All beaches of Montenegro

Despite the fact that Montenegro has a rich history and, as a result, a large number of interesting historical and architectural sites, the main riches of this country are, of course, its beaches! On the very small coast of Montenegro there is a huge number of different beaches for every taste and color.

Mostly they are sand and pebbles. Concrete beaches are also common in the Bay of Kotor. To the south of Bar, sandy coasts are more common. The beaches of Montenegro can also please those who like to sunbathe naked - there are often nudist beaches here. Many beaches of Bar, Tivat, Hercog Novi and Budva are marked with the Blue Flag, that is, they have the cleanest water. The average sea temperature in July-August is approximately 27 degrees. It is worth noting that entry to all beaches in Montenegro is free (of course, this does not apply to beaches located on hotel premises). You can optionally pay only for sunbeds and umbrellas and some other services.

Along the entire coast of Montenegro, there are several rivieras with their own unique characteristics.

Herceg-Novskaya Riviera. Stretched in the north of the country. Pebble and concrete-pebble beaches predominate. On the territory of this riviera there are cities and towns such as Herceg Novi itself, Igalo, Njivice, Meline, Zelenika, Kumbor. The most significant beaches: Royal Beach in Njivice, which has a blue flag, Blatna plaza - beach with healing mud, Igalo(the main city beach of the village of the same name), beaches of Herceg Novi , concrete beach Topla , sand and concrete beach Melyne , pebble beach Zelenika . This riviera has one of the four official nudist beaches Sutorina (near Igalo).

Boka Kotor Bay (Kotor Riviera). The Bay of Kotor is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and its settlements are under the auspices of UNESCO. For a beach holiday, this is, of course, not the best place in Montenegro, but many can find several advantages here. The lack of properly equipped pebble beaches is compensated by incredibly beautiful landscapes and warmer water. Most of all beaches are concrete. The main cities: Perast, Kotor and Risan have city beaches with concrete platforms. Also worth noting: pebble Bajova Kula (Bajo Tower) in laurel tree thickets, sand and pebbles Morinj .

Tivat Riviera. In the vicinity of Tivat, which is not a very popular holiday destination among tourists, there are nevertheless several good beaches. Tivat - the main city beach, Donja Lastva (Lower Lastva), Kalardovo beach (Kalardovo) and others.

Budva Riviera. Perhaps the most popular coast among tourists. The Riviera got its name in honor of the capital of the Montenegrin coast - Budva. This also includes popular resort villages: Petrovac, Rafailovici, Becici, Sveti Stefan. Which beaches should you pay attention to first? This is primarily the Slovenian beach (the main beach of Budva), Becici beach, Sveti Stefan beach, Petrovac, Buljarica.

Bar Riviera. People come to Bar not for a beach holiday, but rather for shopping and the Old Town of Bar. However, there are also a couple of good beaches for relaxation in the vicinity of the city. Thus, Sutomore beach was awarded a blue flag for high service and cleanliness and attracts a large number of tourists to this village. Bar itself also has a good city beach.

Ulcinj Riviera. The Ulcinj Riviera can pleasantly surprise even those who, before getting to the outskirts of Ulcinj, combed the entire coast of Montenegro. This riviera is really very different from the usual Montenegrin coast. Particularly worth highlighting is the sandy Velika plaza (Big Beach), 13 km long, and the sandy Small Beach in the very center of the city, the beach of the Ada Boyana island.

We present to your attention the largest and most detailed map of the best beaches in Montenegro! Almost all known both urban and semi-wild beaches are marked on it, and a brief description is also given. Montenegro is a country in Europe. In Montenegrin, its name sounds like Crna Gora.

In many languages belonging to the Western European group, the name is an adaptation of a word that came from the Venetian language - Montenegro. Literally translated, it means “black mountain.” Speakers of other languages use the direct translation of this word to refer to the country.

The state is located in the southeastern part of Europe. Its territory occupies the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. A detailed map of Montenegro gives an accurate idea of the small size of the state. The northernmost and southernmost points are less than 200 kilometers apart. The distance between the extreme western and eastern points is only 173 kilometers.

Montenegro on the world map: geography, nature and climate

Montenegro on the world map is a state washed by the waters of the Adriatic Sea in the southwestern part and bordering on land with the following countries:

  • Croatia – the length of the border in the west is 14 km;
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina - the length of the border line located in the northwest is 225 km;
  • Serbia and the Republic of Kosovo – the length of the demarcation line in the northeast is 203 km;
  • Republic of Albania – the length of the border territory in the southeast is 172 km.

The total length of the land borders is 614 km. And the coastline stretches for 300 km. In the southwestern part it is cut through by a vast bay Boka Kotorska with an area of 87 km 2. At the same time, Montenegro owns 14 islands in the Adriatic. The total length of the beaches stretching along the southwest of the country is 73 km.

If you look at the map of Montenegro in Russian, you will note that the territory of this state is conditionally divided into three main parts. This is the coastline along the Adriatic Sea, the central area, where mainly plains are located, as well as mountainous areas along the eastern borders.

Hydrography

The longest waterways in Montenegro are Tara River, Lim And Cheotina. Half of the rivers in the country belong to the Black Sea basin, the other half to the Adriatic.

A significant part of the rivers flows in mountainous areas; canyons are formed along their course. One of them, located along the Tara River, is the deepest in Europe. Its height is 1.3 km.

The largest freshwater lake in the country is called Skadarsky. It also holds the leadership in terms of water surface area (369.7 km 2) on the Balkan Peninsula. Moreover, a third of the area belongs to the Republic of Albania. In addition, one of the features of the nature of Montenegro are the so-called “mountain eyes”, or mountain lakes. They are formed by melting glaciers and have a beautiful blue-green color. There are 29 such “mountain eyes” in the country.

Relief

The highest point in the country is Mt. Bobotov Cook. It rises 2522 m above sea level. The mountain belongs to the Durmitor massif in northwestern Montenegro. In total, there are 70 mountain peaks in the country, the height of which exceeds 2000 m above sea level.

A significant part of the area of Montenegro is occupied by mixed and coniferous forests (41%), as well as pastures (about 40%).

Climate

The country is located in several geographical zones, so that different parts have their own climatic characteristics:

  • on the coast the climate is Mediterranean, with hot (+23 0 - +25 0 C) and dry summers and cool (+3 0 - +7 0 C), but short winters;
  • in mountain systems the climate is harsh, with moderately warm summer months (+19 0 - +25 0 C) and relatively cold winter months (+5 0 - -10 0 C), the duration of snow cover is about 5 months.

In Montenegro, an average of 500–1500 mm of precipitation falls annually. The number of sunny hours per year is up to 2700.

Map of Montenegro with cities. Administrative division of the country

There are 1240 settlements in Montenegro. A map of Montenegro with cities in Russian clearly demonstrates that only 40 of them are cities.

The capital of the state is the city of Podgorica. It is an administrative, political and economic center. The entire territory is divided into 21 communities, or municipality. Their names correspond to the names of the main cities.

The most populous cities in Montenegro are Podgorica, Niksic and Pljevlja.

  • Podgorica. The population is 150 thousand people. It is located 30 km from the shores of the Adriatic Sea and occupies about 10% of the state's territory. Podgorica lies in the Skadar lake basin, at the confluence of the Moraca and Ribnica rivers.
  • Niksic. Population 58 thousand people. The second largest settlement in Montenegro, located in the central part, near Mount Trebiesa, in the Niksic Valley. It is the largest municipality.
  • Pljevlja. The population is 19 thousand people. Located in the northern part of the state, it serves as the administrative center of the municipality. The city was built at an altitude of 770 m above sea level, near Mount Lyubishna.

In this post you will find several maps of Montenegro, highlighting the main attractions, beach resorts, historical cities, etc.

There are also detailed maps of the most popular resorts (Budva, Kotor). If you need information on a city/resort that is not in the post, leave your question in the comments and I will definitely answer it.

I was unable to find a detailed Montenegrin map in Russian, so I decided to write a big post about all kinds of maps of this Balkan country. The maps for this post were collected from various places (commercial tourist shops, government tourist offices, Internet sites, etc.).

If you have a good Russified map of Montenegro, send it to me, and it will be immediately posted in this post.

For your comfortable acquaintance with the maps, I will try to “Russify” them with my comments and notes.

Montenegro is one of the countries of the former Yugoslavia, which is why not every tourist can immediately find it on the map. In addition, the country is small even by European standards; the territory of Montenegro is only 13,812 km?.

Pay attention to this map. It shows that Greece, beloved by many, will be a little to the south, and all-inclusive Turkey will be even further to the south. If you compare Montenegro with Turkey (especially for a beach holiday), you should take into account that the sea in Turkey is warmer and the season is a little longer.

The flight from Russia to Montenegro is nothing (about 3 hours), about which airport to choose, read the link.

Which countries does Montenegro border with?

There are very interesting countries in the neighborhood (see map), some of which were previously part of Yugoslavia.

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina (excursion review) - visa-free visit for Russians, you can visit as part of an excursion;
  • Serbia is a very interesting country, I recommend visiting it yourself;
  • Albania (excursion review) - in summer a visa is not required for Russians, you can visit as part of an excursion;
  • Croatia is an EU country, there are excursion services, but you need to have a Schengen visa;
  • Italy - a ferry runs from the Montenegrin city of Bar to the Italian Bari, Schengen country.

Tourist map of Budva, resort map with residential areas

Budva is the main tourist resort in Montenegro; the city is perfectly suited for mass tourism, so let’s start with the Budva map.

On this tourist map you can see how the Jadran Road highway passes through the city - along this route you can drive the entire country along the coast, from Croatia to Albania.

The route roughly divides the city into two parts. If you are looking for housing in Budva (follow the link for a detailed post about renting housing in this resort), then down to the sea there are expensive hotels (Alexander Hotel, Slavyansky Beach Hotel, etc.), up to the mountains - cheaper apartments (there are quite a lot here offers for renting private apartments and rooms with daily rates).

Be sure to read my general post about renting Montenegrin resort real estate, about its types and rental features.

Residential areas of Budva on the tourist map

  1. Podkoshlyun- on the map this is the far right side of the city (on the opposite side from the Old Town), this area is always quiet and peaceful;
  2. Rosine- in the very center of the map, here are located: the Budva bus station, the main market, large supermarkets and other infrastructure important for tourists, as well as a smooth road to the sea (I lived in this area);
  3. Gosposhtina- a stone's throw from the Old Town, close to the Mogren beaches, this area is always noisy;
  4. Lazi- a very hilly area (located above the Podkosljun area), it’s high here and it’s quite difficult to walk in the heat;
  5. Podmine- within walking distance from the Podmajne Monastery, this area is not very popular among tourists, too far from the sea;
  6. Dubovitsa- the area is located close to the bus station and the city center, there is excellent infrastructure and a smooth road to the sea;
  7. Bizheli- if you live in this area, you will clearly hear the Top Hill discotheque; Topliški Put Street runs through the area, which leads to the discotheque;
  8. Vidikovac- the area is located next to Mogren beach, and has the most beautiful view of the Old Town, but it takes a very long time to walk uphill.

Tourist maps of Kotor

Good transport accessibility opens up great prospects for this resort. The city has an international airport, the Porto Montenegro yacht club, a bus station, and a highway.

Becici on the map

Next to the noisy Budva (literally a 15-minute walk), there is the calm resort village of Becici. The small town is located on a hillside that goes down to one of the best beaches in Montenegro. There are not many attractions in Becici, but they are interesting.

A holiday at this resort is suitable for those who love peace and tranquility. Becici is especially good for tourists with small children, as the local beach is magnificent and the entrance to the water is smooth and smooth.

Petrovac on the map

The resort town of Petrovac is located 20 kilometers from the noisy and overpopulated Budva; tourists come to this resort for a family vacation.

Budva on the map

Budva is located in the very center of the Montenegrin coast. If you are staying at this resort, this will allow you to travel around the whole country on public buses (see the link for detailed instructions on using Montenegrin buses), and you can return to your hotel every day.

If you rent a car instead of a bus (follow the link, my experience and details of car rental), then yours (follow the link, detailed car route for the entire vacation).

Budva is the most tourist resort in the country, from this there are both advantages (good service, a large selection of accommodation, there are markets and supermarkets, etc.) and disadvantages (many vacationers, high prices in restaurants, noisy, etc.) .

The resort town of Bar on the map

In the south of Montenegro, in close proximity to the Albanian border, the city of Bar is located. Closer to Albania is only Ulcinj, which is very different from other cities, and this is precisely because of its proximity to the border.

Many people criticize this city, and for good reason. I would not recommend choosing this resort for a beach holiday, although there are several beaches in Bar. But while there you should (of course) visit the Old Town (Old Bar), go shopping (sometimes there are discounts on old collections) and scuba dive (there are several certified dive centers in the city).

Ferries to Italy depart from New Bar, which has a large seaport, so anyone can visit the Italian city of Bari.

  1. On the Budva Riviera;
  2. On the Hercegnovskaya Riviera (Boko Kotor Bay);
  3. Beaches of New Bar;
  4. On the Ulcinj Riviera.

Montenegro has a long coastline; the country has more than 70 kilometers of Adriatic coast, where you can find a beach to suit every taste and budget.

There are several types of beaches in the country: sandy (often with imported sand), small and large pebbles (the most common), rocky (it is better to have special shoes to enter the water).

Let's look at the map and see that it is convenient to group the beaches according to their location. We will divide the entire coast into several areas: the Budva Riviera, the Hercegnovskaya Riviera (Bay of Kotor), the beaches of New Bar, and the Ulcinj Riviera.

Beaches of the Budva Riviera

The beaches of the Budva Riviera should be found in the very center of the map. In Budva and its surroundings, sand and pebble beaches predominate, some of them with rocky areas, but during the tourist season there are no free places on any beach in Budva. You can walk along all the beaches of the Budva Riviera (from Budva to Sveti Stefan) using the link.

There are several popular beaches on the Budva Riviera: Lucice (Petrovac), Sveti Stefan, Morgen, Jaz and Ploce beaches. During the tourist season, all the beaches from Budva to Sveti Stefan are very popular, but the entrance to some costs astronomical money (from 100 Euros and above).

Beaches of the Herzegnov Riviera

The best beaches of the Boko Kotorska Bay are located on the Hercegnov Riviera, it is located near the border with Croatia (from Herzen Novi to the Croatian Dubrovnik is only 50 kilometers). It should be borne in mind that in Herceg Novi and throughout the Bay of Kotor, there is no open sea, it is a bay with all the ensuing pros and cons.

The beaches on the Hercegnov Riviera, as in most places in the Bay of Kotor, are rocky - it is not very convenient for swimming, and sometimes dangerous. In the most touristy places of the bay, the shore is simply poured into concrete, and one must enter the sea along a ladder, as if it were a swimming pool.

This sounds crazy, but all these inconveniences are perfectly compensated by the picturesque views. If you look at the photographs of the concrete beaches of Herceg Novi, it seems like nothing, but this is a matter of taste.

Beaches of New Bar

On the map, the city of Bar should be found south of Budva; it is located between the resort of Petrovac and the city of Ulcinj.

On the coast of Bar there are several good beaches, mostly sand and pebbles, there is even a tiny beach with red, coral sand. But you should remember that New Bar is a large port and not the best place for a beach holiday.

Popular resorts of Montenegro, map of Montenegro, interesting facts about Montenegro

They say that to get to know Montenegro, you need to travel around it by car or at least walk around the main resorts. We fully support this idea - our map of Montenegro will help with this! Explore the main resorts, zoom in and out to see the roads - anything is possible with our map!

On a large world map, Montenegro looks very tiny. When you need to plan a route from Becici to Budva, or estimate how long the road from Tivat airport to Bar will take, an interactive map of Montenegro comes to the rescue.

Paper maps are not always convenient, especially if you are in transport or walking. Our online map of Montenegro will allow you to find your way around wherever you are. All you need is a laptop, smartphone or tablet.

Resorts of Montenegro

  • Ulcinj

    The resort of Ulcinj is the southern point of Montenegro on the border with Albania. Famous for the Royal Beach, which is quite long and very wide. The entrance to the sea is shallow; to get to the depth you will have to walk several tens of meters. As for the holiday itself in Ulcinj, it can be described as calm and quiet. The tourism infrastructure is poorly developed; the vast majority of vacationers are elderly Europeans and families with children.

  • Sveti Stefan

    Many tourists associate Montenegro with a place called Sveti Stefan or St. Stefan. This is a small island where even members of the royal families of Holland and Great Britain vacation from time to time. However, for the ordinary tourist there is always a cozy place here. Sveti Stefan bears the honorary title of a premium resort. Local residents managed to preserve the medieval flavor, so all the local architecture is imbued with the spirit of antiquity. Not far from St. Stephen there is an interesting monastery called Proskavica.

  • Sutomore

    More suitable for independent travel, since the hotel base is small, and the lion's share of accommodation is in the private sector. Compared to Becici or Budva, Sutomore is not such a green resort. It is just beginning to develop. The beaches are long, covered with sand and small pebbles. The first tourists begin to come to Sutomore in May. But since the Adriatic Sea is quite cool, it is most comfortable to relax here from June to August.

  • Rafailovichi

    A popular resort for a quiet, measured holiday. It is located just between Becici and Budva - you can reach them on foot. The best beach is Kamenovo. The atmosphere of homely warmth and serenity is created by one- and two-story houses, narrow streets and small cafes. There are no noisy, large hotels. If you want a bright and eventful nightlife, Budva is very close.

    Milocer has the status of one of the most beautiful resorts. The city is located in a dense pine forest, ideal for a family holiday. Once upon a time there was a residence of the king in Milocer, and this already says a lot. Even today, the president of the country likes to relax here. There is a lot to see in the city. A walk to the park near the former residence of the king or a visit to the Durmitor mountain range will help diversify your beach holiday. You can find hundreds of plant species brought from Africa, the USA and Asia.

  • Petrovac

    Most tourists are residents of the CIS. It has a delightful waterfront area and reasonable property prices. Petrovac is chosen by those who value comfort and beautiful nature, tranquility and coziness. We can recommend this resort to couples with children and newlyweds, as well as older people. There are two beaches in Petrovac. The depth begins quickly, so parents need to be extremely careful when swimming with their children. There are few active entertainments and nightclubs, so young people in Petrovac will be a bit bored.

  • Pržno

    Pržno can be described as a cozy and very nice resort with ancient architecture. The closest “neighbors” of Przno are the resorts of Milocer and Sveti Stefan. Kotor is a very nice place in the Bay of Kotor. The city was built back in the Middle Ages and has retained its ancient flavor. It attracts tourists with its beautiful nature and abundance of thematic festivals that take place here almost every week. Arriving in Kotor, you will definitely want to visit the fortress built in the 13th century, the Cathedral of St. Tryphon and the Church of St. Luke. In the evening, the coastline of the resort comes alive; there are many cozy restaurants and cafes with reasonable prices and delicious cuisine.

  • Budva

    Budva is the most famous resort in the republic, and this already says a lot. The main feature of the resort is its rich infrastructure. The old town is surprisingly combined with newfangled villas and shopping centers. Of interest from a cultural point of view. The swimming season lasts from June to September.

  • Bar

    A port city with an incredibly clear sea. Suitable for tourists who are accustomed to rich infrastructure and noisy parties. You definitely shouldn’t expect peace and tranquility from the Bar. Despite this, the city is very green, with fruit orchards and groves everywhere. Therefore, the air in Bar is always fresh and saturated with oxygen. Holidays in Bar can be recommended to tourists who are not used to sitting in one place and love walks and active pastime.
