Important: in this guide, we cover the general requirements that apply to most airlines. We strongly recommend that you clarify each specific case with the air carrier.

Usually, airlines allow carry-on luggage and one additional personal item on board. For example, a small bag. With what can be carried in hand luggage more or less understandable. But these rules often do not apply to personal items.

Because of this confusion, many do not fully understand what is still considered personal things and what is not. Usually it goes like this: you just take a backpack with you on board and hope that there will be no problems. It's time to stop being afraid, now we'll explain everything.

What is considered personal property?

A personal item is something that can be carried in addition to your hand luggage and is usually free of charge.For example, a small bag, backpack or similar item that fits under the front seat.

But note: different airlines have different rules. Check the information before going to the airport.

What is the difference between personal items and hand luggage?

Hand luggage can be quite bulky and is placed in the upper luggage compartment. Personal items are small items placed under the front seat.

Is the backpack a personal item or hand luggage?

Some airlines do not mention this on their websites. Therefore, just in case, do not stuff the backpack tightly with things and be sure to check its dimensions.

List of things that you can carry with you

According to paragraph 135 of FAP 82, you can take these things with hand luggage:

  • A backpack, the weight and dimensions of which are established by the rules of the carrier, or a handbag, or a briefcase with things enclosed in a backpack, or bag, or briefcase
  • Bouquet
  • Outerwear
  • Baby food for a child during the flight
  • Suit in a suitcase
  • A device for carrying a child (a cradle, restraint systems (devices) for children under two years of age, a pram and other devices) when transporting a child, the dimensions of which are established by the carrier’s rules and allow them to be safely placed in the aircraft cabin on a shelf above the passenger seat or under seat in front of the standing passenger seat
  • Medications, special dietary needs in the amount required for the duration of the flight
  • Crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, a folding wheelchair used by a passenger and having dimensions that allow them to be safely placed in the aircraft cabin on a shelf above the passenger seat or under the seat in front of the passenger seat
  • Goods purchased in duty-free shops at the airport, packed in a sealed (sealed) plastic bag, the weight and dimensions of which are established by the rules of the carrier

Photos, video cameras and laptops will now have to be packed in hand luggage. It is unlikely that you will be able to carry an umbrella cane, but a small umbrella that fits in size is quite possible.

The list varies by airline, be sure to check with your carrier.

List of items NOT to bring with you

Knives and other sharp objects. They must be packed and checked in as luggage.

Liquids over 100 ml

Firearms (obviously, but just in case, we'll leave it here)

Rules for carrying personal belongings in different airlines

All airlines adhere to approximately the same rules for the transport of personal belongings and hand luggage: items must be safe and pass in size.

But there are still some differences, so we have collected the requirements of the three most popular Russian carriers: Aeroflot, S7 and Pobeda.

Aeroflot

You can carry (per passenger):

A backpack up to 5 kg and weighing, in the sum of three dimensions, no more than 80 cm. Either a handbag or a briefcase.

Bouquet of flowers.

Outerwear.

Baby food for the child during the flight.

Suit in a suitcase.

A device for carrying a child (a cradle, restraint systems (devices) for children under two years old, a baby stroller with dimensions not exceeding 42 × 50x20 cm).

Medications.

Crutches, canes, walkers, a folding wheelchair, removable prosthetic limbs (arms, legs), a portable oxygen concentrator (with dimensions not exceeding 55 × 40x20 cm).

Goods from Duty-free.

S7

Under the "Basic" tariff, you can carry hand luggage up to 10 kg and dimensions not exceeding 55 × 40x23 cm. In addition to such a bag, you are allowed to take:

  • A handbag, briefcase or backpack (weight no more than 5 kg, and dimensions should not exceed 75 cm in the sum of three dimensions).
  • Bouquet.
  • Outerwear.
  • Baby food for the child during the flight.
  • Suit in a suitcase.
  • Device for carrying a child. In terms of dimensions - no more than 55 × 40x23 cm.
  • Medications, special dietary products in the amount required for the duration of the flight.
  • Crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, folding wheelchair used by the passenger.
  • Products purchased in duty free. Purchases must be packed in a sealed plastic bag, weighing no more than 3 kg, and the dimensions in the sum of three dimensions no more than 75 cm.

"Victory"

Victory is a special case. The airline provides favorable prices on air tickets, but her approach to the transportation of passengers is non-standard.

On February 19, 2019, Pobeda changed the rules, now they formally fit the requirements of the Federal Aviation Rules.

You can take one piece of hand luggage into the cabin of the aircraft, weighing no more than 10 kg and measuring up to 36 cm x 30 cm x 4 cm. Hand luggage must fit in the calibrator.

In addition, you can bring with you:

Ladies bag or briefcase / backpack with dimensions of 36 × 30x23 centimeters.

Outerwear.

One suit in a bag.

Bouquet.

Medications and nutrition for the child.

Baby cradle when transporting a child.

Used crutches, cane.

Products from DUTY FREE with dimensions not exceeding 10 x 10 x 5 cm.

But it is not exactly. "Victory" may not miss something, even if this "something" goes down the list.

Lack of indication of the weight and dimensions of some items cannot be regarded as an opportunity to carry items that are obviously not small items and allow them to be placed in hand baggage without prejudice to the rights of other passengers or security requirements as defined Supreme Court RF. The carry-on baggage allowance is not cumulative and does not apply to children under 2 years old who are transported without a separate seat.As an alternative to these rules, you can use the previously valid rules for the carriage of hand luggage (as amended until February 18, 2019): hand luggage is not limited in quantity and weight, but a hand luggage meter with dimensions of 36 x 30 x 27 centimeters must fit freely.Also, in excess of the established hand luggage allowance, a passenger can carry a laptop or tablet in the cabin of the aircraft.

How much luggage can you take on a plane? Can I carry alcohol, perfumes, aerosols, medicines, cigarettes in my luggage? But what about food? Let's consider these questions in detail.

There are no international rules for baggage, each air carrier regulates this issue independently. The airline may choose to carry baggage by seat or by weight.

Permissible baggage weight per person on the plane

The weight system allows you to carry free of charge:

  • in economy class no more than 20 kilograms of baggage with its total linear size of 203 centimeters;
  • in business class, with the same dimensions, it is allowed to take 30 kilograms with you.

If at least one parameter of your baggage does not fit into the established norms, the air carrier has the right to require additional payment. Children under ten years of age under such a system have the right to transport ten kilograms of things, and from the age of twelve they are already entitled to an adult norm for the carriage of goods.

The weight system is convenient because when traveling together, the weight of all things is added up, and the number of bags is not counted.

The local system replaces the weight system, despite its obvious convenience. Aeroflot recently switched to it. Here are the shipping rules:

  • economy class allows you to take only one piece of baggage with a bag no heavier than 23 kilograms;
  • in business class, the conditions are milder: two pieces of baggage weighing no more than 32 kilograms each.

The main difference of the luggage system is that the weight of luggage is not cumulative. For example, on a double flight in economy class, passengers carry two things weighing 15 and 25 kilograms. The extra two kilos will be counted as a third piece of baggage and paid in full. When planning luggage before travel, keep in mind that such an overload is paid at a high rate, comparable in price to a ticket. Therefore, you should carefully calculate the weight of things.

The requirements for the maximum allowable baggage size in the local system are even stricter: the total linear size of the item is not more than 158 centimeters.

Rules for transporting food, alcohol and cigarettes on an airplane

Alcohol is not included in the list of goods prohibited for transportation on an airplane, but there are still certain rules for it. So, in hand luggage, each adult passenger has the right to carry one liter of alcoholic beverages, regardless of their strength. The entire quantity is divided into several containers no more than 100 milliliters each. All bottles are packed in a plastic bag with a zipper. It is forbidden to use them on board: the packaging must not be broken until the end of the flight. Breaking the rules can get you in trouble.

Carriage of alcohol in baggage is regulated by the following rules:

  • liquids not stronger than 24% are transported without restrictions, but without going beyond the general weight restrictions;
  • alcohol with a strength of 24 to 70%, not more than five liters per passenger;
  • alcohol stronger than 70% is prohibited for transportation.

Alcoholic drinks, purchased before the flight in duty-free stores, are allowed to be transported in hand luggage, but in a whole package with a saved receipt. In low-cost companies, you will most likely have to pay for transporting a package of alcohol from a duty-free shop.

AT different countries The allowances for transporting strong drinks can vary greatly, so please inquire about this issue separately before an international flight.

The same recommendations apply to the question of the rules for transporting cigarettes. However, each country sets its own standards, which should be guided by before flying. For example, when flying on the territory of the Russian Federation, only one cigarette block (10 packs of 20 cigarettes each), up to 250 grams of tobacco or no more than 50 cigars can be transported in hand luggage. In this case, the passenger must be 18 years old. Other countries have different age limits. For example, in Egypt, a 15-year-old passenger may well carry tobacco products with him, but only those who are already 20 years old can fly to Japan with cigarettes.

As for medicines, it is allowed to carry medicines in solid form (capsules, powders, tablets) in hand luggage. Liquid medicines, as well as ointments, creams and gels, should be in original containers up to 100 ml, and then packed in a bag (necessarily transparent) measuring 20x20 centimeters.

When transporting prescription drugs or drugs containing psychotropic / narcotic substances, you will need to present a prescription from a doctor, and in order to carry out international flight It is also necessary to declare such drugs. For passengers with an insulin-dependent form of diabetes, an exception is made: vials of insulin, syringes and glucometers are allowed in hand luggage.

By the way, for international flights there is a list of drugs prohibited for transportation, and you should familiarize yourself with it before departure. For example, when flying to the USA, you will not be able to take Corvalol, which is familiar in Russia, on board.

On domestic flights, you can take solid food into the cabin if it fits in your hand luggage and does not exceed the weight. On international lines, follow the rules of the countries where you are going. Usually they are forbidden to carry eggs, fish, meat and dairy products. The ban is connected with the fact that these products are perishable and can cause an infectious disease and even an epidemic.

Transportation of liquid products is regulated separately. These include, in addition to water and juices, canned food, jam, jelly, honey, sour cream, cottage cheese, sauces.

Most airlines regulate the carriage of liquids and limit it to one liter per passenger, poured into hermetically sealed bottles with a capacity of no more than one hundred milliliters. All other liquids, including cosmetics, deodorants, colognes, perfumes, mosquito sprays and shampoos, are checked in as baggage under the new rules.

What is forbidden to carry on an airplane in baggage in 2020

There are dangerous items that are prohibited for transportation, both in hand luggage and in the luggage compartment. These include:

  • weapons: cold, firearms, gas, stun guns;
  • explosives: dynamite, cartridges, pyrotechnics;
  • gases: liquefied, compressed in cylinders, aerosols;
  • flammable liquids: petroleum products, acetone, solvents;
  • solid flammable substances: matches, metal potassium, calcium, sodium;
  • poisonous and toxic: nicotine, arsenic, mercury;
  • caustic and rapidly corrosive: salts, acids, lime.

The same list includes magnetized and radioactive substances.

The list of substances and items prohibited for transportation under the new rules is extensive. If you are planning to bring an unusual item on the plane, check this list in advance or consult with an airline representative. Compliance with such simple rules guarantees the safety of all passengers and the absence of problems during the inspection of luggage.

What to do if prohibited items are found in luggage or baggage

Passengers often carry a “prohibition”, doing it not intentionally, but simply without knowing the rules of the flight thoroughly. If the airport security staff found prohibited items in hand luggage or baggage, and you don’t want to lose them, the situation should be resolved in the following ways.

  1. If prohibited items are found before check-in: give them to the accompanying persons, hand them over to the storage room or send them by mail (there is a branch at each airport) to the right place.
  2. If prohibited items are found after the check-in procedure, then airline employees will offer a couple of options for resolving the misunderstanding: complete confiscation of the “prohibited item” or temporary seizure with the ability to pick up things after returning. Make sure that an act will be drawn up for items that are valuable to you, but prohibited from being transported, according to which you can get them back.

In any case, try to prove to the security service that this item is dear to you - there is always a chance that security officers will meet halfway.

There are different requirements for things carried on the plane in baggage and carry-on baggage.

Going on a trip using air transport, a person takes with him things that he will need on the way. They have the status of hand luggage, which can be carried on board the aircraft, or baggage, which will be placed in the luggage compartment.

Hand luggage in 2020 must meet the following requirements:

  • dimensions do not exceed 56x45x25 cm;
  • weight 5-12 kg;
  • this type of baggage is examined before boarding in the presence of the passenger;
  • on an airplane, hand luggage is placed on a shelf or under a seat;

In places where they are emergency exits do not place luggage under the seat.

In the baggage of the aircraft, things are transported, the weight of which corresponds to:

  • per passenger in business class - 30 kg;
  • in the economy - 20 kg;
  • for a child under 2 years old - 10 kg.

How much luggage can I carry in economy class

The aircraft itself, its loading and unloading hatch must be adapted for the transportation of such cargo. It is necessary to find out from the company in advance whether it is possible to transport oversized cargo. There are other options when you have to transport fragile goods, such as banks, services, and so on. In this case, a special tag is affixed to such baggage, which warns of the nature of the cargo. However airlines are not responsible for the safety of fragile cargo.

International rules and standards for transportation

Baggage is an important part of an airplane flight. Much depends on how companies will build their cargo policy. At the international level, a number of recommendations and rules have been developed:

  • there are ICAO standards that recommend certain transportation rules to all international organizations;
  • there are standards adopted by aviation organizations of specific countries;
  • adopts its own rules, which are binding on those who use the services of a particular airline.

These regulations apply both to those who carry things in the cabin and to those who move them in baggage.

The new rules for the carriage of hand luggage of Aeroflot airlines - this is the next video.

How to avoid trouble

The wheelchair itself is checked in as baggage for the duration of the flight, and only one battery can be transported. Weapons are also prohibited for transportation. But there are options when collection or hunting specimens and ammunition for them can be transported with special permission. For this you need:

  • at the stage of buying a ticket, you must declare your desire to transport such an item;
  • two permits must be issued: for export and for storage;
  • weapons must be in a special case, cartridges - in the package.

If hunting weapons are transported, then you must arrive for registration two hours before it. At registration, weapons are handed over, and they are already received when they arrive at their destination. The weight of the transported must not exceed 5 kg.

Despite the fact that there are options to carry weapons with a special permit, however, there are exceptions here, when prohibited items for transportation cannot be delivered to an aircraft, even with a special permit. These things include cartridges for a gas pistol.

When collecting luggage for a trip, you should take into account the rules for the import of items of the country in which the passenger will arrive. Otherwise, you may encounter an unpleasant moment of searching things and seizing them. You need to clearly know what you can not carry in your luggage on the plane or in what quantity. Since there are restrictions on the volume of liquid and other factors.

And if there is a violation in at least one of the parameters, the airline may require an additional fee. In addition, children under the age of 10 years are allocated a place for luggage with a weight not exceeding 10 kilograms. After 12 years, the rate increases to the standard.

Prohibited Items to Carry in Baggage on Any Airline

The very first item on the list of items prohibited for transportation is a ban on potentially dangerous things, such as:

  1. All types of weapons: firearms, cold steel, gas, pneumatic guns. This category also includes stun guns of any power.
  2. Items created on the basis of explosives: TNT, ammonal, gunpowder, dynamite, explosive liquids and the like.
  3. Pyrotechnic and signal items: firecrackers, smoke bombs, flare guns.
  4. Gas: substances, liquefied and compressed in cylinders, technical or domestic, aerosol. Also included in this group are items such as a lighter and a can to refuel it.
  5. Flammable liquids: ether, menthol, acetone, brake fluid, any petroleum-based substances.
  6. Flammable substances in the solid state: matchboxes, potassium, sodium, phosphorus and others.
  7. Substances containing poison and other toxic components based on nicotine, arsenic, strychnine, mercury.
  8. Things that can contribute to corrosion: salt, acid, peroxide, lime.
  9. Spreading radiation.
  10. Objects with a magnetized structure.

In addition, the baggage rules prohibit carrying on the plane any items that can damage the cargo or harm people's health. For example, dry ice or asbestos.

When traveling to Russia from another country, it is worth knowing that the import of live plants, seeds or soil is strictly prohibited.

Important! It is allowed to transport such piercing weapons as a crossbow, scimitar, sword and sword in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

What happens if prohibited items are found in the suitcase

As soon as airport security detects that a passenger is transporting a dangerous weapon without a prior permit, it is confiscated and handed over to the police. The airline's customer will be removed from the flight until the investigation is completed.

If the cargo prohibited for transportation by air does not pose a danger or value, it is disposed of according to the rules. In case of importance of items and valuables for the passenger, it is possible to leave them in storage in order to receive them after returning.

Usually things that are on the prohibited list are already found at the front desk. Therefore, they are most often given to the mourners or left in the storage rooms. In addition, it is possible to send them through the post office. Items that cannot be carried in the cabin, but are allowed to be carried in the baggage compartment, will need to be transferred to checked baggage.

If customs officers find prohibited items in hand luggage during a post-passport screening, they will confiscate them. But the passenger has the opportunity, after drawing up an act of withdrawal, to leave things at the airport service with a guarantee of return after return flight. In some cases, airline employees go forward and independently hand over items to luggage compartment with the possibility of getting them on the tape.

In the event of a dispute, the passenger should carefully consider the situation and not be nervous. With a friendly appeal to the airline employees, it is possible to resolve the incident without losing items dear to the heart. They will help you find a way out of this situation. If the passenger shows aggression, he can be removed from the flight.

What is allowed in checked baggage

Any item that is not classified as dangerous goods can be transported on an aircraft. For the convenience of passengers, airline tickets often give the entire list of what can be carried in luggage. But it must be taken into account that there is no one standard for all countries. The main reference point in this case is the country where the passenger is sent.

The list of such things, for example, includes religious items and books if the passenger lands in Dubai.

Alcohol, which was purchased directly at the airport in the duty-free shop, is allowed to be carried in hand luggage. But provided that the package is not opened and there is a cash receipt. Low-cost airlines have slightly different rules in this regard and may not be allowed on board with alcohol, even bought in a duty-free shop. Or you may need to pay a certain fee.

In order to transfer prescription drugs and drugs that contain psychotropic or narcotic impurities, you will need to show a prescription from a doctor. If the flight is international, then they will also have to be declared in order to avoid problems with the customs service.

The only exception is passengers with diabetes who are in need of insulin. Together with the medicine, they can carry syringes and glucometers.

Airlines when making domestic flight allow the carriage of solid food in the cabin, if due to it the weight or dimensions limit will not be exceeded. But for an international flight, it is necessary to clarify in advance about the possibility of transporting food. It is often forbidden to take fish, meat or dairy products with you on such flights. This is due to the fact that such products are recognized as perishable, and there is a possibility of infectious diseases, which can develop into an epidemic.

Limited items that can be put in checked baggage

Subject to precautions and restrictions, the following items can be checked into the luggage compartment:

  1. Cutting things intended for household use.
  2. Alcohol-based drinks must be transported in original containers with an alcohol content of not more than 70%.
  3. Alcohol-containing liquids, if they contain less than 24% alcohol.
  4. Sports and household aerosols.
  5. Thermometer packed in a regular case. No more than 1 piece per airline customer.

What items can be carried in hand luggage, observing the restrictions:

  1. Mercury-free medical thermometers or in a case from the manufacturer. No more than one copy per passenger.
  2. Barometer with mercury, hermetically sealed with sender's seal.
  3. Non-refillable lighter, no more than one.
  4. A mixture of dry ice designed to cool perishable food, but not more than two kilograms.
  5. Three percent hydrogen peroxide with a volume of not more than one hundred milliliters per person.
  6. Liquids and aerosols that do not endanger the life and health of passengers are transported in a volume of one hundred milliliters. Or packed in a plastic transparent bag no more than one liter.

About transporting fragile items in luggage

Fragile items are processed according to the same principle as any other item of the passenger, according to weight or space occupied in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

The system of payment by weight of baggage is widespread in the CIS, Europe and Asian countries, it is assumed that things will be transported free of charge, but a limit is set. If the total weight of items exceeds the established parameters, the airline's client will need to pay extra for excessive weight.

Payment for the space occupied by baggage is practiced most often in America, but at the same time, such a system can be found with air carriers in Australia, Russia and Europe. According to the rules, passengers in economy class are allowed to check in the luggage compartment one suitcase or bag weighing no more than twenty-three kilograms. Customers who have purchased business class tickets are given an additional seat with a total weight of no more than 64 kg.

When transporting fragile baggage, the whole procedure is carried out according to standard rules, the only difference is a mandatory mark, which must be attached to the package. All luggage marked with this sticker must be loaded into the luggage compartment manually. However, airlines are not responsible for the preservation of items.

If you fear that fragile cargo will not be safe, even with such a mark, it can be transported in hand luggage. But subject to the conditions on permissible parameters, that is, the weight should not exceed 5-10 kilograms, depending on the established weight limit.

When transporting fragile goods, it is necessary to provide it with high-quality packaging. For example, put an item in a box with sealed walls. It is also necessary to avoid voids around it. They are best filled with Styrofoam, paper rolls or clothing. So, the passenger will protect the fragile cargo from chaotic movement inside the box.

If an airline customer is transporting liquids in glass bottles, they must be placed in an airtight container and then in a transparent zip-lock bag.
