Imperial Stone Island Palace. Kamennoostrovsky Palace as part of the open city project

Julien Pavillard

Art director and curator of the festival "Inspiration-2017", former art director of the Festival of Light in Lyon

“VDNKh reminded me of the forest at night, where, willy-nilly, you begin to believe in magic, which is why so many installations are dedicated to nature. The project involves 12 artists, three of them Russian. Light is a very cultural thing, but I did not feel a strong difference between our artists and yours. Here with Asia, the distance, of course, is much greater for Europeans. In China and Japan, moonlight, white and cold, is more valued. And we in Europe love warm, sunny - after all, at one time we even had a "sun king", Louis XIV.

The Inspiration festival takes place in the summer, while lighting projects in the world are usually implemented in the winter, on the eve of the winter solstice. There is not enough light at this time for everyone, and therefore Moscow, probably, needed so much light on the boulevards in winter. It seems to me that you are not able to maintain a balance - there were too many illuminations last winter. I have never seen anything like it in any other city in the world! Also, it was an industrial light, not an artistic one. We, on the other hand, assemble each of our projects, including those in the Ostankino park, by hand, thinking about new types and prospects.

By the way, there is not much light in my own apartment. This is on purpose - to deal with the light, you need to love the darkness. Therefore, my favorite artists are the old Dutch. Their work perfectly shows what effect can be achieved by playing with light and darkness.”

"Heavenly Lumilliers" and "Nests of Light"

“Our exposition is opened by a mirror luminous arch 3.5 meters high - a symbol of the entrance to the magical space. It has built-in smoke machines that will fill the arch with fog. And right behind it - the objects of the Frenchman Eric Barre. In 1993, he was commissioned by LVMH to design the windows of 150 stores around the world, and that is how he became famous. His signature woven wicker and broom sculptures are so finely crafted that it looks like nature itself is glowing. Each of its flowers reaches six meters: first, the stem braids the branches of trees, then the bud begins from a special transparent paper for video projections.

"Horse of the Night"

“The work of this artist and 3D engineer is difficult to photograph. His works are so virtuoso and convincing that at night it really seems like a horse is galloping. He works with movement and in all his drawings he marks the key points that add up to the image of a running animal. At these points, LED-lights are located.

"Cocoons"

“These cocoons reach four meters in length. There are lamps inside, and thin strands of light fiber around it, which create a beautiful effect with soft light around the object.”

"Birds"

“There is a lot going on around the pond: at its bottom we planted luminous birds, on the other side sardine fish fly over the water - they were made by the French art association Aérosculpture. They are made of lightweight material - milard, a kind of plastic - and fly like balloons, but they do not glow themselves, but simply reflect directional light from water and trees.

The birds in the trees of Le Born came out quite small: a little over two meters. We once invented them for Geneva, but there they were five meters long - absolutely huge. They are very light, weighing only eight kilograms, because they are hollow from the inside. Light lamps are just inside, and thanks to the roasting technique, it seems that they are voluminous and somehow specially painted.”

"Dancing Sylphs"

Congo Bleu is the creative association of festival curator Julien Pavillard

“We photographed each of the 16 statues of the Friendship of Peoples fountain at VDNKh and brought them to life in projections. Now it seems as if these river spirits have gone on a journey through the forest: they walk and communicate with each other. The fountain, it seemed to me, is very theatrical - in the evening it seems that the faces of the sculptures are moving a little. And we tried to tie everything together - the fountain, the sculptures, the buildings - and let the imagination run wild. A separate artist - composer Gilles Fournier - works with a sound picture. He will make these statues sing, dance and laugh."

However, the designers have developed a few simple tips for choosing the best interior solutions: the decor of the apartment must match the spirit of its owner - only in this way can it bring the owner a sense of peace and pleasure from relaxation; it is necessary to decorate the interior based on the architectural features of the room: you can not use an abundance of dark elements or stucco in small rooms, as well as decorate impressive rooms with small objects in the Provence style; it is necessary to select materials, decor and interior items based on the developed style of the room and fully suit it, otherwise a feeling of dissonance and discomfort will be created. Today, the III Annual Inspiration Art Festival kicks off in Moscow, which will present a light projection program with elements of an immersive show and multimedia art. The theme of this year's festival is "The Nature of Inspiration". Well-known European artists worked on the fabulous atmosphere of the Ostankino park, including Julien Pavillard, who created the legendary Festival of Lights in Lyon.

The route of the entire installation takes almost a kilometer and starts from the main entrance to the Ostankino park. With the help of powerful projectors, art installations, and kinetic sculptures, French masters have created a "magic forest" where Muscovites and guests of the capital can walk in the company of fairy-tale characters, animals and birds. It is better to come to the park when it gets dark outside. It was then that thousands of light bulbs on the main entrance arch light up, curved lumières begin to glow among the trees with all the colors of the rainbow. One of the thematic areas of the festival is called "Pandora" - based on the film "Avatar" by James Cameron. Also, one of the central objects of the festival was the "revived forest" - 200 meters of forest near the pond of the Ostankino park turned into a huge screen on which nature itself draws.

Here you can see the kinetic sculpture "Horse of the Night" by the Frenchman Remy Brun, "Cocoons" by the Belgian sculptor Dimitri Parimeros, wicker sculptures "Heavenly Lumilliers" and "Nests of Light" by artist Eric Baro and flying installations of luminous fish. Children will especially like the festival. Some of the zones are specially made interactive. By tradition, Inspiration will close on August 1, the birthday of VDNKh, with a light projection show with the participation of a symphony orchestra.

For the third year in a row, the Inspiration art festival has been held in Moscow. The favorite venue for the festival is the territory of the Main Exhibition of the capital. Every year, Muscovites and guests of the city attend a grandiose laser light show as part of the festival. 2017 was no exception. On July 21, everyone hurried to the "Magic Forest" in Ostankino Park, where the opening of the "Nature of Inspiration" festival took place.

Festival themes

Every year the festivals are dedicated to art and inspiration, showing their different facets. In 2015 it was AQUA-SHOY. At the festival, for the first time in Russia, the control of a laser show was implemented. The design of the fountain complex has changed due to the dynamic program of jet movement and illumination.

The 2016 festival had the theme "The World of Wanderings. A Tale of a Dream". Despite the fact that the festival lasted only three days, great musical works were performed at it, there was a theme of the history of the theater and playwrights. The landscape of the VDNKh space turned into a place where dozens of impromptu theatrical performances were shown to the public.

"It is a very right idea to hold summer festivals with concerts at the Main Exhibition of the country", - one could repeatedly hear their opinions from the mouths of the festival guests.

"Magic Forest" in Ostankino Park

In 2017, according to the established tradition, on July 21, the festival began on the designated theme "Nature of Inspiration". Like previous festivals, this one was held at VDNKh at the address: Ostankino Park "Magic Forest". The forest actually turned out to be magical, without exaggeration. The best artists from Europe worked on the creation in woodland multimedia space under open sky. In the world of lighting design has been used for a long time. In Moscow, original ideas for working with light were shown at the festival.

The phenomenon of immersive immersion) is one of the main trends modern industry entertainment. Heroes of legends and myths, forest spirits, all kinds of mythical animals were immersive at the festival. The guests who came to the festival were full participants in what was happening, they were attracted by the magical forest with its installations. Visitors to the festival events were overwhelmed with delight from what was happening. Many shared their impressions of the effect of being in this fairy-tale world in their reviews of the "Magic Forest" in Ostankino Park with friends and on social networks.

Who worked on the project

Thanks to the work of world famous European and Russian artists invited to the festival, dozens of installations of pristine nature and its beauty were created. Their work was supervised by Julien Pavillard, who in the past led the legendary light show in Lyon. The "Magic Forest" featured works by Eric Barre, Alexi Gabiro and others. A total of twelve artists worked on the project. As Julien Pavillard recalled, there is practically no difference in the installations created by European and Russian artists. Europeans like to work with warm sunlight, unlike China and Japan. They work with moonlight, cold light.

In world practice, lighting projects are carried out in winter, during the winter solstice. There is not enough light, so people are happy to come to the light shows at Christmas and New Year holidays. The festival was held in Moscow in the summer and it was necessary to somehow maintain the light balance. The night light show was just what we needed. The balance effectively showed what effect the play of light and dark had.

What is the "Magic Forest" filled with

Arriving at the "Magic Forest" of Ostankino Park, whose opening hours during the festival period began at 21:00 and lasted until one in the morning (for twelve days), you could walk along the kilometer route of the fabulous landscape. The exposition began with a mirror luminous arch - a symbol of the entrance to the "Magic Forest". Walking in the park, people involuntarily felt the magic. The revived forest communicated with the guests of the festival with the whisper of leaves and the voices of forest dwellers. Mythical creatures and fairy-tale characters flickered behind the trees. There were also underwater birds and fish soaring in the air.

All this was created using volumetric light projections, art objects, 45 powerful spotlights, interactive sculptures and sounds. It's unusual, beautiful and free! And, most importantly, this was not the case in Moscow even at previous festivals!

The entire territory allotted in Ostankino Park for the design of the festival was divided into zones. They play with corners with islands of light, clearings with forest spirits, ponds with flying fish and a grove with magical trees. How to get to the heart of it - the interactive zone in Ostankino Park in the "Magic Forest" - the guests of the festival could learn from the festival brochures. In this zone, 15 posts with buttons were installed, allowing you to get into controlled magic. By pressing this or that button, the guest discovered in a special light the figures of mythical animals, flying fish or other fabulous phenomena. Part of the zones made for children was also interactive.

Works by Eric Barre

Having walked through the fifty "Lumiliers" and among the bewitching wicker sculptures of Eric Barre in the "Magic Forest" of Ostankino Park, the feedback from visitors was so enthusiastic that they wanted to come again and again to this extraordinary light show at the festival. And no wonder. The world-famous artist Eric Barre has repeatedly presented his unique works, which reflect the eternal desire for harmony. They are made of willow and broom.

Fame came to him when, on behalf of LVMH, he decorated the windows of 150 stores around the world. In Switzerland and France, his signature sculptures were seen. The guests of the festival saw such works by Barre as beehives made of twigs, illuminated from the inside - "Pershlums" and "Needlums" - bird's nests made of willow branches.

Artwork by artist Cedric Le Bourne

This artist is known for his installations, photography and street performances. He brought to the festival luminous static birds sitting on poles in a fairy forest. The same series of birds was created for the festival in Geneva. There they were huge, up to five meters. The birds created for the Moscow festival were two meters high. On magical nights, everyone who came to Ostankino Park was pleased.

Festival guests could see flying luminous birds at the bottom of the pond, and sardines, luminous fish, flew over the water. They were made from milard (a type of plastic) by the French art association Aérosculpture. The fish were illuminated by beams of reflected light from trees and water. The artist's world-famous works were brought to the festival and became part of the "Magic Forest" in Ostankino Park. The photo of his "Magic Doe" is simply irresistible!

How do objects come to life?

"Galloping horse", created by Remy Bran, fascinated the walking public in a magical forest. The works of Remy Bran are known outside of France. He is a participant of exhibitions of special effects in Great Britain, Holland, Finland. It is impossible to photograph his sculpture, but the video material clearly shows the movement of a static figure. Working with volumetric light sculptures is the control of a billion points of light that a computer program performs.

The guests of the festival liked the works "Forest Herbs" and "Magic Wild Berries" by French designer Murka Glogowski. Her work combines elements of the street and visual arts and scenery.

Other festival installations

The impressive picture, which was invented by the artist Alexis Gabiro "Pandora", made an indelible impression on the guests of the festival. She reminded mysterious planet from the movie Avatar. The forest was bluish, but it looked like neon white.

Using the technique of video mapping (the art of creating and superimposing three-dimensional projections on physical objects), video artist Alexi Gabiro created the revived sylphs of the Friendship of Peoples fountain on the territory of the Magic Forest. These river spirits danced, circled in round dances. Composer Gilles Fournier brought these figures to life with music. They sang and laughed.

How and what to get to the festival

The organizers of the festival provided advance information about the date and venue of the festival. A corresponding handout was printed, which indicated how to get to Ostankino Park in the Magic Forest. The easiest way, indicated in the advertising booklets, is to come to the festival by trams No. 11, No. 17 and No. 25 to the final stop "Ostankino". It was possible to arrive from the center of the capital by buses running along the routes m9, 24, 24k, 85, 311, 379, 561.

Also, it was possible to come from any part of the capital to Ostankino Park in the "Magic Forest" by metro, having reached the Timiryazevskaya, Fonvizinskaya or VDNKh stations, and then twenty minutes on foot to the park. Or from metro stations to get any transport one stop.

Final day of the festival

The last, final day of the festival was dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the Main Exhibition of the country. The closing program included the Russian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Dance Land Jazz Orchestra and the Hermitage Ensemble of Soloists. How to get to Ostankino Park in the "Magic Forest", no one had any questions. During the twelve days of the festival, Muscovites and guests of the capital learned the route well. Therefore, on the last day, many people came and came to Ostankino Park.

In the program of the last day of the festival, musical groups performed classical pieces and jazz hits. The concert program was held against the backdrop of the light projection of the artist Alexis Gabiro, on the "Magic Forest" in Ostankino Park.

In the park "Ostankino" at VDNKh, the III festival of arts "Inspiration" is taking place right now. A multimedia space has been created in the forest of the park, the guides of which are the spirits of the forest, animals and fairy-tale characters.

In 2017, the festival explores the theme "The Nature of Inspiration". More than 20 works of European and Russian artists are devoted to the pristine beauty of natural phenomena. A fabulous landscape, moving pictures and characters are created using volumetric projections, light and kinetic sculptures, interactive objects and sound.

The curator of the festival is the famous lighting artist Julien Pavillard. At one time he was the art director of the festival of light in Lyon - the largest of all light festivals in the world.

In Ostankino you can see the unique works of artists inscribed in a fabulous space - "Birds" by Cedric le Born, "Horse of the Night" kinetic sculpture by Remy Brun, "Cocoons" by the Belgian sculptor Dimitri Parimeros, "Dance with Sylphs" by Alexis Gabiro and many others. The length of the route is about one kilometer.

"Inspiration" is open every day from 21:00 to 00:30 until August 1, while admission to the art festival is completely free. detailed information about the festival is on the official website of VDNKh.
