Winter fishing for perch on mormyshka

In winter, a favorite pastime of many fishermen is fishing for perch. Someone in the cold season hunts an active predator, and someone tries to lure and catch a sluggish and cautious perch. Both options involve the use of similar gear and fishing techniques, both can have different results. In any case, the fisherman first needs to prepare a fishing rod, pick up effective mormyshkas and, of course, find places with a good bite on the pond.

Places for catching perch on mormyshka

First of all, try to fish in relatively shallow areas with uneven bottoms, that is, in places where there are lonely snags, small thickets of reeds, small depressions and hills. Fishing in those reservoirs where the population of this predator is very large can be successful in almost any area, even with a uniform, even bottom.

Often, perch can be found not only in shallow water, but also in places with medium depth or even in pits, but, of course, catching in such deep places is less comfortable. In general, the optimal depth for perch fishing is 1-3 m.

Winter fishing rod and reel

For winter fishing on jigs, light plastic fishing rods are used, commonly referred to as “balalaikas” or “phones”. In this case, a small reel is built in by manufacturers directly into the body of the fishing rod, and first of all, it is needed to store a certain amount of fishing line.

To ensure sufficient cushioning during hooking and avoid breaking the tackle, whips with a length of 10 cm or more are used. As a rule, they put cone-shaped lavsan nods with a length in the region of 40-70 mm. The level of flexibility of the nod depends on the weight of the bait used: the nod should bend a little under the gravity of the mormyshka.

When choosing a fishing line, the main thing is not to go to extremes. The optimal diameter of the fishing line is 0.09-0.1 mm, when hunting a predator weighing from 500 g - 0.12 mm. An increase in the thickness of the fishing line negatively affects the quality of the game of the jig, which, of course, will also affect the number of bites.

Regarding the question of how much fishing line to wind on the reel, we note that it is worth starting from the mark of 15 m, but there is also no need to wind the entire reel.

Which mormyshka to choose for perch

Mormyshkas are divided into two categories: mormyshkas that are used in combination with some kind of bait, and those that do not require the use of an additional nozzle (“reelless”). The latter require certain skills in fishing techniques from the fisherman. Mormyshkas are most often made of lead or tungsten, each model has its own shape, a certain weight and color. The perch bites well on small (2-4 mm in diameter) “drop” or “shot” models with a weight of 0.2-0.3 g. The most effective and therefore popular baits are bloodworms and chopped worms.

Mormyshka game

The result of fishing largely depends on how the mormyshka behaves in the water. An active perch is not too picky, and therefore it often does not require too skillful baiting to catch it. A passive perch is not so easy to provoke an attack, you need to make more effort and patience. Try different game options, for example, the following:

  1. Having lowered the mormyshka to the bottom, raise it back to a height of about 20-30 cm, while carrying out medium oscillations, and then calmly lower the bait to the bottom again.
  2. Make 5-6 taps with a mormyshka on the bottom of the reservoir, gently raising the bait by only 5-7 cm and each time making a small pause at the top point.
  3. Raise the mormyshka evenly by 20-25 cm and tap the rod whip with your finger in parallel.
  4. Make intense oscillations of the bait near the bottom with short pauses of 2-3 seconds.
