Excursion to the Pavlovsk park scenario. Pavlovsk - Bip fortress and Pavlovsk Palace

Mood now - squirrel

In fact, all guests of our city are taken on excursions to Peterhof, Ekaterinensky Park, Alexander Park and Pavlovsky Park. Pavlovsk Park is considered one of the best landscape parks not only in Russia but also in Europe. It is located in a very beautiful place in the valley of the Slavyanka river.

Unlike a park that has a regular layout, a landscape park involves only a slight alteration of natural nature - there are no even paths and trimmed trees, and its outlying territories may more resemble a forest. But if you look closely, you can see that in ordinary nature, trees never grow the way they do here - they are artificially planted in beautiful groups. You can talk about Pavlovsk Park for a very, very long time, and an hour of walking, which is given to guests of our city for sightseeing, is still so little =) Today I will show you a few favorite places in the park

Not far from the Cold Bath is the so-called family grove, each tree of which was planted simultaneously with the appearance of a new member of the royal family. This tradition was established by Maria Fedorovna in 1785. The family of Paul I and Maria Feodorovna had ten children, when they grew up and got married, trees were planted in honor of their chosen ones, and then the children who appeared. Thus, by the time of Maria Feodorovna's death, there were 50 trees in the garden.

On the this moment The grove consists of coniferous trees and this is the most suitable place if you suddenly want solitude and silence. Yes, this is where the squirrels are fed;)

Temple of Friendship- This is a building resembling an ancient temple, erected in the form of a rotunda with 16 columns. The building is located in an amazingly beautiful place on the banks of the Slavyanka River next to a grove. The Temple of Friendship has an amazing property - from a distance it looks small and airy, but close up it seems monumental and solemn.

The building was created in 1784 on the initiative of Prince Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Feodorovna as a token of gratitude to Catherine II for the lands donated to them. The building was designed by Charles Cameron and it was his first building in Pavlovsk Park.

Initially, the blank wall of the rotunda was painted white, but from the 19th century it acquired a yellow color. Light entered the building through a glass hole in the dome. Cameron, worried that there would not be enough light, ordered a special magnifying glass from England.

Above the entrance there is a thank-you inscription addressed to the Empress, and in the niche opposite the entrance there was a statue of the goddess of wisdom, Minerva, whose face resembled Catherine II. Inside the building there was carved furniture, the walls were decorated with stucco.

The Temple of Friendship was the venue for chamber concerts, which were attended by a select audience. In the summer, sculptures from the museum's funds are often exhibited here.

parade field- This is a part of Pavlovsky Park, starting at the end of Lipovaya Alley. Previously, military maneuvers and parades took place on this territory, hence its name appeared.

The development of this area was carried out in two stages. In the early 1790s, under the leadership of Vincenzo Brenna, a parade ground was built here, where Paul I personally conducted parades and military exercises. During this period, the territory was expanded to the future Pink Pavilion Ponds and surrounded by a cast-iron fence.

After the death of the emperor in 1801, Pavlovsk ceased to be the grand royal residence, but remained the property of the royal family. In the years 1803-1813, Pietro Gonzago was engaged in the arrangement of this area.

And soon, instead of the once dusty parade ground, a magnificent landscape park appears - meadows with flowers, groups of trees on the shores of lakes and shrubs of various colors. The park is beautiful at any time of the year - in summer and spring there are many flowering plants, in winter, spruce and pine trees look great against the background of white snow, and autumn will delight you with a bright golden carpet.

Under the leadership of Gonzago, the Pink Pavilion Ponds were built on the territory of the district (these are two ponds connected by a narrow strait through which the Deer Bridge is thrown). In the middle of the pond, Liven Island was washed up, named after Countess Charlotte Liven, the tutor of princes and princesses in the house of Paul I. Away from the alleys, a modest monument in the form of a column with a metal ending was erected, also dedicated to this woman, who became a good angel of the Romanov family.

In the Paradnoye Pole district, not far from Lipovaya Alley, there is a mass grave where workers and soldiers who died during the revolution and civil war are buried.

Peel Tower- This is the most original building of Pavlovsk Park, built in the style of pastoral (rural) buildings that were fashionable at that time. The idea of the building belongs to Pietro Ganzago, and the project was made by the architect Vincenzo Brenna. The name of the Pil-tower comes from the word “to cut”, because there used to be a sawmill in this place, working from the pressure of the water of the Slavyanka River.
The stone building, created in 1797, was two-storey, had a round shape with a cone-shaped roof covered with thatch. An internal staircase with a railing made of birch trunks led to the second floor. Later, Voronikhin replaced this staircase with an external stone one, and instead of a water mill, he built a bridge with a beautiful arch and metal railings.
The outer walls were covered with paintings depicting the once beautiful building destroyed. But only in appearance this building looked poor and miserable, inside it was a luxurious salon in which Maria Feodorovna loved to relax. This richly decorated room had a marble fireplace and a mahogany table, as well as three sofas with cushions embroidered with gold and silk threads. The salon was decorated with paintings and stucco, vases and clocks.
On the ground floor there was a utility room, in which, according to legend, the guilty and not fulfilling their duties were serving pages. The Peel Tower is one of the most expressive buildings in Pavlovsk, resembling a castle in miniature.

In the design of landscape parks, artificial ruins were often used, because, compared with the new building, the ruins fit very well into the green landscape, without creating too sharp contrasts. Many cascades have been built in Pavlovsky Park, one of them is Ruin, created in 1794 by the architect Vincenzo Brenna.

This structure, built at the confluence of the Lower Starosylvia Pond with Slavyanka, successfully connected two forest areas - Old and New Silvia.

Vincenzo Brenna gave each of the cascades built in the park an elegant architectural design.
The viewing platform of the building is decorated with dilapidated vases, pedestals with lions lying on them, made of tuff. As a fence, the architect used the trunks of freshly cut birches. Nearby one could see fragments of ancient figures and fragments of a column.
You can see the Ruin Cascade full of water only during the period of active snowmelt.

The pavilion was built in 1782 by architect Charles Cameron and was originally intended for keeping livestock and storing milk, which is why it got its name - dairy.
In the middle of the 18th century, despite the dominance of the classical style in architecture, the fashion for the pastoral, that is, the rural style (pastoralis in Latin means “shepherd’s”), penetrated into Russia, in particular, when decorating landscape parks, it became fashionable to use elements of rural life.

Empress Maria Feodorovna ordered from the province of Etupe, located on the territory of modern France, a sketch of the construction of a farm and wished to see an exact copy of it in Pavlovsk. However, Charles Cameron did not simply copy the building and implemented several of his ideas. So, a bell was installed on the roof, calling the cows for milking, and to make the building romantic, he passed a birch through the roof. The building is made in the form of a medieval building, made of dark stone and resembles a German farm or tavern.

Initially, cows were kept in one room of the farm, two more rooms were used to store milk, and the third was designed as a luxurious lounge, decorated with beautiful furniture and elegant service. As a result, there was too sharp a contrast between the gentlemen's hall and the neighboring cattle room. Therefore, in 1786, all the animals were transferred to the built barnyard.

During its history, the Dairy burned several times and has not been preserved in its original form. Back in 1895, the roof was lost in a fire along with a birch hole. But even more damage to the building was caused by the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War. Now there is a cafe here.

That's all for now =) next time I'll show you a very unusual estate with a very mystical history;)

  • Journeys with Maria Anashina Walk in Pavlovsk Park

I think I will not be mistaken if I say that Pavlovsk Park can be called one of the most beautiful not only in Russia, but throughout the world. The regular and landscape parts, pavilions and sculptures, the picturesque Slavyanka River and numerous ponds, bridges and baths harmoniously coexist here. It is impossible to see it in one day. This time I wandered around the park for several days, took pictures, enjoyed the scenery. And then, a significant part, alas, was not covered.

In one post it is difficult to tell about all the sights of Pavlovsk Park. Therefore, for convenience, I will break my story into several parts. And today - an introductory part, a brief introduction to the park.

The history of the creation of Pavlovsky Park

Pavlovsk was presented by Empress Catherine II to her son, Tsarevich Pavel Petrovich and his wife Maria Feodorovna in 1777. And soon the construction of the summer residence of the Grand Duke and his wife began here, and after Paul's accession to the throne in 1796, Pavlovsk became the imperial residence. After his death in 1801, Pavlovsk passed to the Dowager Empress, Maria Feodorovna. After her death in 1828, Pavlovsk was inherited by the Romanov family, and after the revolution of 1917 it was transformed into a museum. Great damage to Pavlovsk in general and Pavlovsk park and palace in particular was caused during the Great Patriotic War. After the victory, the Pavlovsk Museum-Reserve was restored thanks to the activities of the director Anna Ivanovna Zelenova.

The most famous architects of the 18th-early 19th centuries took part in the creation of Pavlovsk Park: C.Cameron, V.Brenna, A.Voronikhin, J.Quarenghi, J.Thomas de Thomon, K.Rossi ... - park ensemble.

Pavlovsk Park consists of seven landscape areas:
    ◾Big star,
◾Valley of the Slavyanka River and Krasnodolinnye Ponds,
    ◾Pridvortsovy district,
    ◾Old Sylvia,
    ◾New Sylvia,
    ◾White birch,
    ◾Ceremonial field.

    C. Cameron, who supervised the construction of the park in 1780-1786, determined the layout of the main areas, laid the main roads. Under his leadership, the Pavlovsk Palace and many park pavilions were built. In 1796-1801, the construction was continued under the guidance of the architect V. Brenna. In 1801-1828 the work was headed by P. Gonzago.

The main attractions of Pavlovsky Park, photos

And now let's walk along the paths of the park and look at its main attractions.

Now the former palace estate Pavlovsk is administratively part of the Pushkinsky district of St. Petersburg. Now from zh.d. Kupchino platform to Pavlovsk can be reached by train in 20 minutes. And once a trip to Tsarskoe Selo, and even more so to Pavlovsk, took the Russian imperial court up to two days.
Pavlovsk is separated from the city of Pushkin by the Vitebsk railway.

In the 18th century, dense spruce forests stood in this area and there were two villages of Ingrian Finns Linna and Seppel. Under Catherine II, these lands were used mainly for hunting. In 1777, in gratitude for the birth of her first child, the future Emperor Alexander the Blessed, the tsarina granted extensive hunting grounds in the valley of the Slavyanka River to the heir to the throne, Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, to create a country residence. This year is considered the year of foundation of Pavlovsk.

The Pavlovsk Palace Estate was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Imperial Court. Already at the end of the XVIII century, around the palace of the grand-ducal couple with a huge (the largest in Europe) landscape park, state-owned and philistine buildings began to be built with mansions and suburban dachas of the capital's aristocracy. Since 1784, the estate of Pavel Petrovich with the villages of Linna and Seppel became the village of Pavlovsky, and in 1796, by decree of Emperor Paul I, the village of Pavlovsky received the status of a city. And then this city was given to the property of Empress Maria Feodorovna. According to her will, Pavlovsk was inherited by one of her many sons - Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich. Further, Pavlovsk was owned by: the Grand Dukes Konstantin Nikolayevich, Konstantin Konstantinovich and the prince of imperial blood, John Konstantinovich.
The palace estate occupies the main part of Pavlovsk. And our walk will be devoted to the little-known corners of this suburb of St. Petersburg - those that remain out of sight of most tourists. One of these now abandoned places is Alexandrova Dacha - a neglected, overgrown park in the very south of Pavlovsk. For the first time it was mentioned among the sights of Pavlovsk in the guide of I.G. Georgi as a manor with a pleasure garden in the English style of the Grand Duke and heir to the throne Alexander Pavlovich. The dacha consisted of several manor houses belonging to the Grand Duke and his tutors. There were many pavilions, grottoes and pavilions in the park. C. Cameron is recognized as the author of most of the pavilions. Of the many buildings of the Alexandrova dacha, only one pavilion "Echo" has survived in a very deplorable state. It was dedicated to Flora and Pomona. The pavilion was an ancient Roman semicircular aedicule, where statues of Flora and Pomona stood in niches. The arched opening facing the pond was decorated with an Ionic order colonnade. Now the pavilion is all overgrown with bushes (it is almost impossible to find it in summer) and looks like this.

In the late 1820s, the plot of the Grand Duke passed to General N.N. Annenkov. In 1870, Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich bought the dacha. The buildings have undergone major repairs, and the park has been redevelopment. At the end of the 19th century, the dacha, like other noble estates in the vicinity of the capital Russian Empire, experienced a dacha boom. Manor houses were replanned for renting premises, which completely changed their interior design. Well, three revolutions and two World Wars of the twentieth century completed the destruction of this wonderful palace and park ensemble.
Behind the neglected park of Alexandrova dacha there are stables for horses that ride visitors to Pavlovsky Park. And next to them is the building of an abandoned boiler room with an 80-meter pipe. This is already a monument to Soviet protracted construction. The construction was never completed. In this collapsing building, the pipe is interesting. Ropejumping enthusiasts sometimes come to her, offering to make a bungee jump from the upper balcony of the pipe for only 700 rubles. If you bring three friends, the jump will be free.

Along A.Matrosova Street we will proceed further south to its intersection with the Popovka River. From the bridge across it, cliffs made of Ordovician limestones and dictyonema schists are clearly visible. The height of the cliffs reaches 30 meters. In the thickness of the limestone, you can find petrified representatives of the ancient marine fauna: trilobites, orthoceras and echinospheritus. This natural monument was described in the literature on geology as early as the 19th century.

Along the streets of A. Matrosov and Elizavetinskaya we will return to the Nicholas Gate. On the way, on Elizavetinskaya Street, we will see the cottage of A.P. Bryullov. The architect, on behalf of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, carried out work on the planning project for this area for the construction of summer cottages. Here, in the Slavyanka valley, he was granted a large plot of land. Bryullov himself was engaged in the project of a country house in the form of a "Swiss chalet" and the layout of the park. Belvedere tower served observation deck to the owner, who was building the Pulkovo Observatory at that time.

Not far from A. Bryullov's dacha is Lansere's dacha (nowadays a residential building).

We continue our journey towards Pavlovsky Park. In the valley of Slavyanka we will see picturesque park Marienthal. Its compositional center is the Bip fortress (nowadays a hotel and a restaurant). Before the founding of Pavlovsk, the place at the confluence of the Slavyanka and Tyzva rivers was occupied by the ruins of Swedish earthen fortifications (the name of the village of Linna, located here, is translated from Finnish as "fortress"). In 1778, in the middle of these fortifications, a small palace, Mariental, was built in the form of a castle. A drawbridge leads to the castle across the Slavyanka branch. Under Paul I, cannons stood on the ramparts of the former Swedish fortress. The park at the palace is decorated with many ponds and the Trellis staircase, built in 1793-1795 according to the project of the architect V. Brenna.

Through the Mariental Park you can go to Sadovaya Street. It goes around Pavlovsky Park. At 17 Sadovaya is one of the oldest buildings in Pavlovsk - the parish church of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene. It was built in 1784 according to the project of Charles Cameron. The consecration of the temple was carried out by the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Novgorod. The ceremony was attended by the grand-ducal family, who donated their wedding icons to the temple - the Apostle Paul and St. Mary Magdalene. The church is one of the best examples of strict classicism in St. Petersburg.

On Sadovaya Street, near one of the entrances to Pavlovsk Park, there are Nikolaevsky Gates. They arrange the entrance to the city from Tsarskoye Selo. The gates were built in 1826 according to the project of C. Rossi at the behest of Emperor Nicholas I for the birthday of his mother, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna.

Zverinetskaya street departs from Sadovaya street. It is so named because during the time of Paul I and Alexander I there was a menagerie here - a special section of the park with extensive enclosures for wild animals. Later, the area was built up with dachas. On Zverinetskaya Street, the dacha of the St. Petersburg architect K.K. Schmidt has been preserved. The Art Nouveau house with half-timbered elements was built according to the project of the owner in 1902-1903.

Zverinetskaya Street will lead us to the Round Pond. Here ended the territory of the menagerie.

In the area of the menagerie, and now dominated by private buildings. Along Lunacharsky Street we will reach Krasnogo Kursant Street. Here, at the intersection of these streets, stands S. Mandel's dacha, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Now it is gradually falling apart.

Along Krasnogo Kursant Street we will reach Oborony Street. Directly in front of us will be the beautiful church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It was built in 1902 for the Pavlovsky garrison in the forms of ancient Russian architecture by the architect A.I. von Gauguin.

Next to the temple are the ruins of the Manezh built in the middle of the 19th century.

Behind the Manezh there is a local cemetery, and we will continue our way along Oborony Street. The complex of barracks of the Life Guards of the Consolidated Cossack Regiment and the 5th Horse Battery, built at the beginning of the 20th century, has been preserved on it. Among them, the building of the Officers' Assembly, built in 1914 in the neo-baroque style, attracts attention.

We will walk back along Oborony Street, past the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and Mariental Park, and exit onto Hospital Street. On the Konyushennaya street parallel to it, many old buildings have been preserved. At number 8, the dacha of Count P.A. Bobrinsky, the brother of the main shareholder of Tsarskoye Selo railway Count A.A. Bobrinsky. There was a rich country estate with outbuildings and a garden.

We follow further to the park along Konyushennaya street. The house of the merchant Pytnikova at number 5 is typical for the townsfolk of Pavlovsk.

Konyushennaya Street got its name because of the Main Palace stables located at its beginning, built in 1786-1792 according to the project of C. Cameron with participation in the design of the facades of V. Brenna.

We again went out onto Sadovaya Street towards Pavlovsky Park. Let's move along its fence to the railway station. At number 9 on Sadovaya Street, the building of Villa Miranda has been preserved. The villa belonged to the chemical engineer I.B. Stein. The building was built in the Art Nouveau style, and the interiors are decorated in the same style.

Let's proceed further along Sadovaya street, past the station and V. Putin's favorite restaurant, along the fence of Pavlovsky Park. This road will lead us to the village of Tyarlevo, territorially merged with Pavlovsk. Tyarlevo was a popular summer cottage. Tyarlev summer residents were: O. Forsh and V. Muravyov - in the future, St. Rev. Seraphim Vyritsky.
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior has been preserved, built in memory of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty in 1913-1914 with private donations according to the project of one of the local summer residents, engineer A. Zakharov. In 1937 the temple was closed, the priest and other clergymen were shot. Until 2003, there was production and a warehouse here, then the church was restored and returned to believers.

Let's go further along the fence of the park and turn onto Novovestinskaya street. It houses a recently restored Farm. It was established by the Dowager Empress, the owner of Pavlovsk, Maria Fedorovna. The building of the Farm was built in 1805 according to the project of A. Voronikhin. On the territory of the Farm, a poultry house, a barnyard, and a pond were dug. Previously, this place was part of Pavlovsky Park, and later turned out to be outside it. During the time of Maria Fedorovna, her guests' walks in the park always ended with a visit to the Farm, where the hostess personally treated those who wished with the freshest milk and eggs. Breakfasts and afternoon snacks at the Farm were quite popular. The farm was managed by one of the German colonists from the village of Etyup in Pavlovsk. Together with his wife, he taught the girls from the Orphanage, which was patronized by Maria Fedorovna, how to properly manage a dairy farm: caring for livestock, milking and producing dairy products. Surplus dairy products from the Farm were sold to local summer residents, and calves to wealthy peasants. All proceeds from this trade went to charitable causes. Maria Fedorovna loved to spend time at the Farm. Here she was engaged in reading and needlework. The Farm had a library, mainly from books on agriculture.

This concludes our walk around Pavlovsk. We did not see everything, but the most interesting corners of this suburb of St. Petersburg.

Pavlovsk Park is rightfully considered one of the finest examples of landscape art and is one of the largest landscape parks in Europe (its area is over 600 hectares). But not only the famous park attracts the attention of numerous guests of St. local residents. Extraordinarily harmonious combination architectural structures that are part of the palace and park ensemble, with picturesque surroundings of the Slavyanka River, touched up by the skillful hands of architects and masters of landscape art, amazes and enchants. The proportionality of artificial buildings and natural landscapes, consonance with the secret strings of the human soul of the entire Pavlovsk ensemble is the merit of both talented creators and members of the imperial family, namely, Paul I and his wife Maria Fedorovna, who not only put their soul into their beloved country estate, but and spent the happiest years of their lives here.

The park impresses with its size and individual areas, completely different in character and composition, and all together is one organic whole. A whole day is not enough to see the whole of Pavlovsk, because only the path from the main entrance (from the railway station) to the Pavlovsk Palace takes about half an hour at a leisurely pace. What about those who came to St. Petersburg for just a week and cannot afford to set aside a few days to visit Pavlovsk Park alone?

Recently, visitors to the park have the opportunity to save precious time and rest their tired legs by seeing some of the sights, sitting comfortably on the benches of an excursion steam locomotive equipped with an audio guide. The cost of such a service is low: 300 rubles for an adult ticket, 150 rubles for a child. The tour, which passes through the areas of the Big Star, New and Old Sylvia, is accompanied by musical and poetic works, one way or another connected with the Pavlovsk Palace and Park Ensemble.

The train departs from the Pavlovsk Palace, elegant and majestic in its yellow and white decoration. It was created by C. Cameron at the end of the 18th century, and then expanded and finalized by architects V. Brenna, A. Voronikhin and J. Quarenghi. From main square in front of the palace, the train will run along the Triple Linden Alley, which is the leading axis of the palace part of the park, and will take passengers directly to the Aviary Pavilion, or Poultry House, where, under Maria Feodorovna, greenhouses with exotic flowers and plants were located and small “chamber” balls were held.

The next point on the route is the Dairy House, skillfully hidden in dense thickets of trees. During the reign of the empress, there was once a barn with cows here, and everyone close to the royal family could taste the freshest dairy products. Then the train will proceed to New Sylvia, at the entrance of which there is a statue of Apollo Musagete with a cithara in his hands, then through Old Sylvia, and along one of its alleys it will reach the Stone Amphitheater, arranged on the right bank of the Slavyanka.

On the left bank was the Earthen Amphitheater, where performances were held, and the audience enjoyed the action from the right bank. Passengers will then see the Viskontiev Bridge, which connects the Lilac and Crickovskaya paths, and proceed along the Alley of the Green Woman, one of the twelve paths in the Big Star area, which was badly damaged at the hands of the German invaders. In the center of the Big Star is the Musical Salon, where musical concerts are held to this day.

The subsequent route of the train passes by the Cast Iron (Nikolaev) gates, installed at the entrance to the park from Tsarskoye Selo. These gates were a gift from Nicholas I for the birthday of his mother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, who doted on her country residence - Pavlovsk. From the Cast Iron Gates, the train will go to the Festival Square, whose name speaks for itself, follow the Krasnodolinnaya Alley, the longest in the park, and pass the Temple of Friendship, created by C. Cameron in the form of an antique rotunda with columns. Along Slavyanka, past Staroshaleynye Ponds, the train will go to the Pilbashenny Bridge and the tower of the same name, which was once used as a resting place at the bathhouse.

From the bridge, the tour will continue towards the Ruin Cascade, designed by the architect V. Brenna, and return to the area of 12 lanes (Old Sylvia area). From there, the train will follow the path along the Parade Field, which was created by the Italian decorator P. Gonzago, and before that Paul I used it as a parade ground for soldiers, and past the Rose Pavilion, located at the junction of three areas of the park: Parade Field, White Birch and Old Sylvia. At the end of the trip, the train of two trailers along the Theater Alley will return to the square in front of the Pavlovsk Palace.
