When planning a trip to Prague, we immediately decided that in addition to the capital, we would visit other cities, among them - the town of Kutná Hora with its famous ossuary. This place attracts tourists from all over the world, and we are no exception.

A trip to Kutna Hora is offered, probably, by all travel agencies. This tour can be easily taken right in Prague, which is especially convenient for those who come to the Czech Republic without a tour operator. Since we did not want to visit the castle, but only Kutna Hora interested us, we organized the trip on our own.

3. St. Barbara's Cathedral- one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in the Czech Republic. Built in the 14th century. the son of an architect who built St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. It was built with the money of local miners (silver was mined in the city), and St. Barbara is considered the patroness of miners. The cathedral is also a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Here you will find a walk through the blood-chilling Ossuary, the elegant cathedral of St. Barbara (Barbora), which looks like it came off a postcard. There are two most popular excursions to Kutná Hora:

Invention of the Ossuary in Kutna Hora

A little over an hour from Prague is Kutna Hora- a city that has experienced greatness and decline. Silver deposits, accidentally discovered by monks during the collection, brought wealth and glory to Kutna Hora in the Middle Ages. An ore market worked in the city, where merchants from all over Europe came for silver, a central mint was opened, where silver coins were minted. At different times, these were Prague pennies, florens, tollars ... In those days, Kutna Hora was considered the economic capital of the kingdom, and in terms of the degree of influence on public life in the country, Kutna Hora was sometimes ahead of Prague. Traces of the long-standing rivalry between the two great cities of the Middle Ages are still visible in the architectural appearance of Kutna Hora.

Long ago, that monastery was closed, and the silver mines were depleted. A few centuries ago, times of stagnation came for Kutna Hora and, gradually, the city turned into a monument to its former greatness. As a memento, there was a magnificent example of Gothic - the church of St. Barbarians, ancient wall frescoes in which they tell about the life of the miners of the Middle Ages. But the temple with its architectural luxury rather contrasts with the city of Kutna Hora itself.

Just 60 km from the capital, you can see the quiet life of a small provincial town, and this is a completely different Czech Republic.

Usually, the name Kutná Hora says little to visitors to the Czech Republic, but many have heard of a temple on the bones, chandeliers made of human remains and tens of thousands of skulls. A burning interest to see this in reality, and the desire to find out whether this is true or a hoax, designed for impressionable tourists, lead many curious people to the town of Kutna Hora.

The ossuary, or the very ossuary, is located in the Church of All Saints in the village of Sedlec near Kutna Hora.
