Travel to macau from hong kong. How to get from Hong Kong to Macau: ways, features and recommendations

A popular Asian metropolis, part of which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

There is only one flight from Macau with the only connection in Beijing. You will have to fly with Hainan Airlines and Air Macau. Despite the length of the flight and the high cost of tickets, it is worth recognizing that the easiest way to get to Macau is by plane.

To Macau via Hong Kong

Most experienced travelers who do not want to overpay airlines choose a rather exotic way to travel to one of the most vibrant and interesting metropolitan areas in the world. How to get to Macau quickly and economically? By ferry from Hong Kong.

Anyone who has now managed to get scared and imagine themselves with suitcases at the ready, wandering along the Hong Kong waterfront in search of a ferry to Macau, can relax. Hong Kong authorities are well aware that their airport is the largest transit hub in Asia. Therefore, tourists can directly at the airport, without picking up luggage and bypassing border guards, go to the ferry following from the transit sector of the airport to Macau. The only disadvantage of such a trip is that ferries from the airport do not run at night after 22.00. Therefore, if travelers do not want to stay in Hong Kong, they will have to go on their own to the pier, from where ships to Macau run around the clock. The Macau Ferry Terminal can be reached by metro. Ferries also depart from the China Ferry Terminal, which is located on the Kowloon Peninsula. It takes about an hour to sail to Macau from Hong Kong.

To Macau via Shenzhen

Shenzhen is a city that adjoins Hong Kong, a major industrial and cultural center, which is of interest to us, first of all, because you can also get to Macau from it. First you need to fly to Shenzhen. From Moscow, this can be done with one change in, Beijing or Wuhan. The journey will take at least 12 hours. From St. Petersburg it is easier to fly to Shenzhen via Beijing (journey time - 12 hours 40 minutes).

How to get to Macau from Shenzhen? There are two options:

  • by high-speed boats or ferries from Shekou area, which can be reached by bus from Shenzhen Baoan Airport;
  • on buses that leave every half an hour to the city. There you should transfer to another bus, which will take you to Macau in three hours.

The idea to visit Macau arose spontaneously, a few days before the end of the first two-week trip to Hong Kong. A few evenings spent on the Internet in hotel room, allowed us to collect the information necessary for a new trip and prepare a map for GPS, marking the main attractions in Macau. Since our vacation was coming to an end, we could set aside only one day for Macau, which we later repeatedly regretted - we had to go here for at least a week. But we had to squeeze the maximum out of one day, so the route turned out to be very busy.

At the end of the article there is a map with the location of the city's attractions, which can, or rather should, be safely included in a one-day itinerary.

Things change over time, of course, and Macau is no exception, so this article is advisory in nature, that is, it can be used as a good basis for planning a day trip, but still be sure to look for up-to-date information on each of the points listed here. Of course, I will try to update the material in case of important changes, but we go to Macau about once every two years, so I might miss something ... I look forward to your clarifications and feedback in the comments!

Some background information about Macau. For 442 years, this territory was a Portuguese colony, and since 1993 - a special administrative region of Macau within China. In the Portuguese manner, the city is called Macau ( Chinese sometimes say Aomen). Various historical buildings were inherited from the Portuguese, one of the official languages is Portuguese, street names in Portuguese, perhaps that's all.

Currency in Macau own - "pataka" ( stress on the second syllable), it is slightly cheaper than the Hong Kong dollar, but on the territory of the city the Hong Kong dollar has free circulation, and we have never seen the local currency for the whole day. However, some travelers in their stories warn of a small nuance: if you pay in Macau with Hong Kong dollars, then make sure that you are given change in them, as patakas can then be more difficult to exchange for another currency. One strange moment: in Macau do not accept coins in denominations of 10 Hong Kong dollars for settlements, I never could figure out why, but it's a fact; in Hong Kong itself, there are no problems with this coin.

This coin will not be accepted in Macau

The city is located on the Macau Peninsula here are all the historical buildings) and on the island of Cotai ( earlier it was two separate islands of Coloane and Taipa). Now Macau is called the Asian Las Vegas, as it is simply great amount casino.

How to get from Hong Kong to Macau. Since you are reading my article, I will assume that you are planning to go to this holiday city from Hong Kong. The most convenient way to do this is by ferry - on Kowloon from the China Ferry Terminal ( strange, but "google maps" say that the terminal is closed, although everything is definitely working ...), on the island - from a special terminal Macau Ferry Terminal.

We used the most convenient option for us and went to Macau with. From your hotel we reached the terminal on foot, but if you are staying in another area, then you need the Scheung Wan metro station, exit D, and follow the signs for a few minutes longer. The terminal building is large, there are many shops and inexpensive cafes. ( If you are staying in Kowloon, here the ferries leave from China Ferry, which can be accessed via shopping center harbor city).

There are two types of ferries that go to Macau - the red Turbo Jet and the blue Cotai. It is better to take a Turbo Jet, as it berths at the pier on the Macau peninsula ( Macau Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal), from here it is easy and quick to get to the historical center and this is the best starting point for a day trip around the city; and blue ferries arrive at Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal on the Cotai Peninsula. Turbo Jet runs almost around the clock, during the day (from 07:00 to 00:00) every 15 minutes, and at night (from 00:30 to 06:00) twice as rarely. The cost of an economy class ticket for a day flight on a weekday is 171 HKD, in the afternoon on a weekend 186 HKD, night tickets cost 211 HKD. Prices for return tickets from Macau to Hong Kong are cheaper: 160 HKD on weekdays, 175 HKD on weekends, and 200 HKD at night. By the way, from Macau can be reached directly by ferry to Hong Kong airport (or vice versa), and since the fall of 2018, also by bus along the longest bridge-tunnel structure in the world, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, which can be very convenient if you are limited in time. It is clear that ferry schedules and prices may change, so check the official website (http://www.turbojet.com.hk/en/routing-sailing-schedule/hong-kong-macau/sailing-schedule-fares.aspx ).

At the ferry terminal, in principle, everything is simple - there are clear signs with pointers, although we still managed to get a little lost, but this problem is easily solved - just ask almost any person at the terminal where the ticket office is or where the boarding gate is, they will definitely help you. Before boarding, you must go through Hong Kong passport control - the procedure is quick and almost formal, but mandatory. By the way, I remind you that you must keep a duplicate of the “Arrival Card” in your passport, which you filled out upon arrival in Hong Kong:

the upper part remains with the border guard, and the lower copy (exactly the same, only under this upper form) is in your passport until departure, and upon returning to Hong Kong, the card will need to be filled out again

Many people advise buying a return ticket to Hong Kong right away, but we took tickets from Macau in the evening at their terminal and didn’t see any hype or crowding, but maybe it’s different on the weekend. The distance between Hong Kong and Macau by water is about 60 kilometers, the journey time is approximately one hour. The ferries are very comfortable, sailing on such an unusual and interesting.

I think that in order to have time to see Macau as fully as possible in one day, you need to leave Hong Kong early, preferably by ferry at 7-00. We were late and we didn’t have enough time to see a couple more sights of Macau.

So, you have arrived at the Macau Ferry Terminal. A visa for Russians for a period of 30 days is not needed. A small queue at the window with the inscription "Visitors", where they will put a very tiny piece of paper in your passport ( before, their border guards attached them to the passport page with a stapler), and boldly go ahead - to explore this amazing city.

At the exit from the Macau terminal, it is recommended to take a map of the city with marked sights. Further, after passing through a small underground passage, you will get to the bus stop - these are free shuttle buses that will take you to the casino, the name of which is indicated on the sign. This parking lot is not needed for our one-day itinerary plan, but still I must say that from time to time - sometimes due to repairs, sometimes because of some events (for example, the Macau Grand Prix) the casino shuttle basses do not depart from it, but from a neighboring building, to which you need to follow the signs and not along the underground, but along the overhead passage.

So, we went on foot along the elevated passage to the left of the terminal, to Fishermans Warf . It starts from the Legend Palace Hotel.

This is beautiful place, stylized as the cities of medieval Europe. In addition to beautiful buildings, there are shops and cafes on the embankment, but since we arrived before they opened, we just arranged a great walk for ourselves, and there was almost no one here except us. Important point- since the first trip, Macau has become even more popular with tourists, especially Chinese, who are driven in groups of 20 people, and there are just a huge number of these groups in the city, and, apparently, in order to have time to spend excursion program for them, they start “walking” around the city very early and now, even at 8 in the morning, the sights are not deserted !!! So once again I recommend starting your walk around Macau no later than 8-00, and preferably early. And NEVER plan it for the weekend - these days the city is just bursting at the seams from hordes of Chinese tourists!

Waterfront Fishermans Warf

At the end of the embankment - casino "Babylon"

And visible long bridge to Cotai island

If you arrived in Macau early in the morning (and not like us), then perhaps after the embankment it is better to quickly walk to Senate Square in order to view it (well, and, of course, take photos) even before it turns into tourist hustle.

At the end of the embankment, we turned behind the green-black-and-gold Babylon casino towards MGM and Wynn.

This is MGM Macau.

The casino has an "Aquarium" hall, its center is an eight-meter cylindrical aquarium, and the space around is always very beautifully decorated. These installations are regularly changed to new ones ( change frequency could not be determined) and they are always very beautiful and unusual. In general, we believe that this hall is unfairly rarely mentioned among the sights of Macau! If you have time be sure to visit to get into the hall you have to go through the casino, but no one will force you to play, and there is no dress code in the Macau casino, so don't be afraid, go up to any security guard or other hotel employee and ask for directions to the aquarium).

At the Wynn Macau casino in The Rotonda hall, starting from 10-00 at the beginning of each hour, there is a free Prosperity tree mini-show (prosperity tree), and in the middle of each hour there is show Dragon of Fortune e.

This is the Wynn casino building.

The Dragon of Fortune Show

The tree of prosperity is a very strange installation: a very large chandelier descends from the ceiling, and a tree in the fog leaves the floor. But if you do not think about it, then the overall picture is impressive.

After the dragon and tree passed through the casino to its main entrance. Here on the square passes very good performance lake fountain show - jets from 300 nozzles dance to the music. You can ask the porter for the schedule or look at the sign near the fountains, but for now it is like this: all days except Saturday from 11-00 to 21-45, and on Saturdays and on the eve of public holidays from 11-00 to 22-45, each show lasts approximately 3 minutes and the intervals between them are 15 minutes; shows are not the same, productions and music alternate. During the day the show is very beautiful, it is a pity that there was no time to watch the night version ( video from off. site). By the way, some unscrupulous bloggers and unscrupulous tourist sites mislead people, claiming that cable car cabins run over this lake - don’t believe it, cable car ( very interesting, we will tell about it too) passes over another lake, also called "Performance Lake", but it is located on the island of Cotai near the hotel "Wynn Palace".

dancing fountains

Next, we tried to get into fortress and lighthouse Guia (Guia Lighthouse) , but started to enter from the wrong side ( haste affected the preparation of the route and maps for GPS), and in order not to waste time looking for the right road, we returned to the city center.

But still, on one of our next visits to Macau, we got to this lighthouse and did not regret it at all, in our opinion the place is very atmospheric and interesting, so do not miss the opportunity to visit there. We climbed the hill with the lighthouse by cable car - it is very short, but interesting and quite suitable as a tourist attraction. The fare is literally a trifle, so we did not even remember the cost.

The lighthouse is clearly visible from many places in the old part of Macau.

Something like a small museum at the foot of the lighthouse

View from the lighthouse on the informal part of the city

By this time, there was already a feeling of hunger, and here we "killed two birds with one stone" at once - we went to have a bite to eat in one of the attractions of Macau - Margaret's Cafe e Nata . This is a very old and very popular cafe whose staples are egg tartlets and coffee. egg tarts ( many call them pies) - another legacy of Portugal, hearty and tasty, with the most delicate custard, here they literally scatter before they hit the counter. That is, pastries are ALWAYS the freshest. The cafe is lost in the alleys of the old city center, you may not find it yourself, ask passers-by ( we even passed by with gps once, I tried to put a mark on the map at the end of the article as close as possible to the correct location, if you didn’t see the cafe right away, then just walk a little along this small quarter - you will definitely see it!).

The cafe is a small room-shop where pastries are taken out of the bakery, and several tables with benches on the street. The view of the cafe is completely nondescript, the tables are old and shabby, they don’t always have time to clean them up after visitors, and if it hadn’t been recommended in almost every article about Macau, then we wouldn’t have stopped here. But we stopped ... We took six tartlets - it was amazingly tasty, we took six more. We were also lucky, since there was practically no queue, and there were two free places, and usually here ( judging by the reviews and photos) just huge queues that go far into the street.

Stuffing tartlet pie

It is not allowed to take pictures inside the premises, all that we managed to capture was the work schedule. As you can see the cafe is closed on wednesdays!

Further according to the plan was the Senate Square or Senate Square (Largo do Senado) . Lined with black and light wavy paving stones, the square is one of the centers of attraction for tourists. It is not very large, very pretty and usually overcrowded. But here we managed to take some almost deserted pictures.

The next item is mountain fortress Monte Forte (Fortaleza do monte) , built in 1616, now there is a museum. It seems that you can climb the fortress with the help of an escalator, but we did not look for it and gladly climbed the hill on foot. From here you can have a good view of the city center.

Cannon Shooting at Grand Lisboa Casino

Further - Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral , they are very close to the fortress of Fortaleza. Highly famous place, replicated in countless photographs. It is always crowded here, even too much, but such an attraction is a must visit. It was possible to get here directly from the mountain fortress, but we returned to the senate square that we liked, from which a small street leads to the ruins ( see pointers). On this street you can buy souvenirs for yourself and friends.

And here is the famous "bakkva" - sweet jerky. the assortment is huge, the sellers give, although they even force you to try small pieces. You can buy the meat you like, you don’t need much, because it’s very satisfying, and it’s not cheap ... The sellers will cut the selected records into convenient pieces and put them in a bag, you can land your fifth points on the benches at the beginning of the street ( closer to Senate Square) and enjoy the local specialty! There is no need to be shy, everyone here does it - both locals and tourists.

So we went to the famous ruins

Be sure to wander in the surrounding alleys! For what??? How for what - for beautiful photos, of course!!! Fortunately, not all tourists walk around the cathedral. most are limited to viewing "in full face".

By the way, in the vicinity of the remains of the cathedral there is a small interesting street "Portuguese Street", which is better known as the "Street of Souvenirs", if time permits, go through it:

After walking around the Senate Square and church ruins, we went to another, less known and visited by tourists. Lilau Square during the time of the Portuguese colony was the main supplier of water for the city. It's tiny, but amazingly cozy! Here we stayed longer than planned, it was so good to sit on a bench under an old tree in such a picturesque and peaceful place.

Why there are children's toys in the tree trunk, we never found out

From Lilau close to Macau TV towers (Torre de Macau) . It is not the highest in the world, 338 meters ( Ostankinskaya is much higher), but this is an excellent observation deck. The site is located at an altitude of 223 meters, the site states that you can view the views for 55 kilometers around, the entrance costs about 165 HKD (https://www.macautower.com.mo/observation-decks/price-list/).

The site itself consists of two levels - on the 58th and 61st floors, visit both. In addition to interesting views, Macau TV Tower offers extreme entertainment- the highest bungee jumping in the world ( bungee jump from a height of 223 meters and a free fall of 5 seconds), a slightly less extreme jump "SkyJump" ( here is a smoother "flight" down), "Tandem SkyJump" for two, climbing the tower along the outer vertical steps "Tower Climb", 32-meter climbing wall "Climbing Wall" and a walk along the edge of the observation deck ( of course, with insurance and an instructor). We saw how they jump from the tower - it’s scary to even look from the side. It’s good that this was the end of our trip and there was simply no money for the jump (2,588 HKD!!!), otherwise you could pay, and then change your mind about jumping, and the money is non-refundable ( such a situation on the tower is not uncommon b). .

There are also restaurants, shops and slot machines in the TV tower ( where without them in Macau).

The space of the TV tower while you go to the box office:

It’s a pity that we don’t have photos from the upper observation deck… Be sure to go up there! On the first platform on the 58th floor, the guard at the elevator distributes people to the elevators - who needs to go down to the exit, and who needs to go to the 61st floor to the upper observation deck.

Part of the floor observation deck made of glass

For a fee, you can take a look through the telescopes

And you can buy these things - each color has its own meaning - and tie them right there to make your wish come true:

Naturally, there are observation and souvenir shops:

On the first observation deck there is a cafe "180 Lounge". Here is the entrance to it:

These are the windows of the 180 Lounge cafe. They do not go outside but inside the observation deck:

Well, for an example of the menu "180 Lounge":

The tower has a 360° Café, a revolving restaurant with a panoramic view, which is very popular and usually by appointment only. Here we didn’t manage to visit this restaurant “on the spur of the moment”, all the places were occupied…

From jumping from the tower, they made a real high-quality attraction: in front of the window, behind which the daredevil flies, a TV was installed for the audience and you can watch how the process of preparing for the jump is going on.

The Edge Walk costs HKD 888, but if you dare to take the second one, it costs only HKD 299

From the TV tower on the shuttle bus we got to the island of Cotai to the casino City of Dreams. Currently, shuttle basses from the tower are already going to the neighboring casino - studio city, which is located in the same area, about 10 minutes at a leisurely walk, so you can immediately adjust the route - inspect studio city, then walk through The Parisian Macao, then go to The Venetian, further to city of dreams, then in MGM Cotrai, and then after a ride in a cabin over the lake with fountains and take a walk in Wynn Palace. There will be enough time for sightseeing, don't worry, ferries to Hong Kong run even at night. But in general, there is no difference to which casino in Kotai the shuttle bus will bring you, since they are located close to each other and it is advisable to walk around all the establishments. By the way, keep in mind that the free casino buses stop serving tourists at midnight, so if you go for a walk, you will have to take a taxi, but before ferry crossing the cost will not be high.

I don't know which casino you will come to, I will assume that studio city, about which we have a separate story.

By the way, about the language of communication in Macau. As tourists who know Portuguese say, despite the fact that this is the official language of the city, the local population does not speak it at all. It seems to be no problem, because there is English, especially since in Portuguese we are not boom-boom. But, with English in the city is also a problem. Even in such a "cool" place as The Ventian, it is difficult to find staff who speak English tolerably. Many do not speak at all, which is simply not acceptable for the tourism industry, and those who speak at least a little English distort it terribly. For example, when we asked the staff at the casino “Where is a shuttle bus to the Ferry Terminal?”, Only the collective efforts of two people could help us, and in their version of the “shuttle bus” ( shuttle bass) turned into some kind of "zhadybazzy" !!! Truth in special travel information centers, which are in all popular places, everything is in order with English.

In addition to the casino hotels I have indicated, there is also a Sheraton in Kotai ( opposite The Venetian and City of Dreams), Four Seasons (between The Parisian and The Venetian), Broadway Hotel ( next to Galaxy), Lisboa Palace will be built soon, there is an interesting Taipa district ( or Taipa Village - across the street from Galaxy) - in general, there are a lot of other interesting things, so it’s unrealistic to cover everything in one day!

Macau made such a strong impression that it is difficult to find words. Particularly surprising is the contrast between the Portuguese historical center and ordinary Chinatowns. Well, and, of course, all kinds of casinos are amazing, like appearance and luxurious interiors. Even if you do not have the strength to complete such a rich program in one day, then at least be sure to take a walk along the alleys of the historical center, I think that anyone can feel the atmosphere of Macau here.

  • 15 minutes by helicopter
  • Another alternative is to take the express train to Hong Kong Island (Terminus) and then cross the subway rail crossing to Shun Tak Ferry Terminal. Follow the signs as you go through the long maze. At the end of the path, you will climb the levels (about 5 in total) on the escalators to the departure halls and there along the wall you will find the TurboJet ticket office for Macau. Enter the restricted area via pedestrian bridge, take the escalator down to passport control, and then again down the escalator to the ferry gate.
  • It will take 1 hour 15 minutes on the ferry, plus 1 hour or more to board the train and go through all the procedures at the ferry terminal.
  • Most ferries arrive at Macau's main terminal Inner Harbor. Some of the newer routes go directly to the casinos in Cotai, which is not recommended for general tourism purposes unless your hotel is located there.
  • Please note that you may encounter "agents" standing in front of the respective ferry counters offering tickets for the next or upcoming crossing. Their tickets are legally secure (offered at face value) as the tour operator repurchases for their group. You can buy a ticket for the next sailing but use it for a later ferry. Or you can buy a ticket for a slightly later ferry, but you can usually present the ticket at the entrance for the next departure if the ferry is not full.
  • A taxi from the airport to the nearest ferry terminal in Kowloon will be very expensive - up to 300 HKD for about one hour. If you are forced to take a taxi, try to find an English-speaking taxi driver and try to bargain up to some fixed amount.
  • The alternative is to take a ferry directly from the Hong Kong airport ferry terminal. Before passing passport control you will need to find the information desk and find out when the next ferry leaves. Since there are only a few departures during the day, you may miss your ferry and then be forced to proceed as described above. If you can catch the ferry, ask about passport control and baggage claim.
  • If you have a lot of luggage, helpers on railway stations they will help you carry your luggage onto the train and later take it out of the train. You will have to manage on your own if you take a transfer (Kowloon) or go to the ferry terminal (Hong Kong Island).
  • On the ferry you can relax, buy food and drinks and use the toilet. Many people are sleeping.
  • In general, Hong Kong is safe at night; you don't have to be afraid to leave the airport or train stations.

In this article, we will look at Macau, how to get there by ferry from Hong Kong, and also look at three piers in Hong Kong, where ferries depart from, and two main companies that carry out transportation in the direction of Hong Kong - Macau.

How to get from Hong Kong to Macau

Just an hour's drive from Hong Kong is the city of Macau, a mega-resort and the center of gambling in China, where there are also interesting historical sights. How to get to Macau with TurboJet

The TurboJet ferry to Macau from Hong Kong runs weekdays and weekends from the piers every 15 minutes. This Hong Kong Macau Ferry only runs to Macau Ferry Terminal.

Travel time for Hong Kong-Macau TurboJet ferries is approximately 55 minutes. They depart from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal pier. They arrive in Macau in the area where the largest casinos and hotels, such as Lisboa and MGM, are located.

TurboJet prices are the same for adults and children, but vary by time of day and weekdays/weekends.

For some reason, the prices back from Macau are lower than there. Apparently, there are more people who want to go to Macau than back :)

These are not all ways to get from Hong Kong to Macau. But these are the most popular. You can also get from Hong Kong to Macau by helicopter. But read about this method in the following articles.

), without spending special money and time on it, using the Hong Kong-Macau ferry. In the same way, it is easy to swim back and forth - from Macau to Hong Kong. Since Macau is famous for its gambling and casinos, many Hong Kongers go there for the weekend or even for a day.

Hong Kong-Macau ferry schedule and back

Travel time- about an hour. The ferry sails very fast.
Ticket price- 150-160 HKD for regular economy class. Others cost more.

Several ferries operate between Hong Kong and Macau. The most popular are TurboJet and Cotai Water Jet, there is also First Ferry, but I didn’t find something on its website.

Ferries run every half an hour from 7 am to 12 am. There are also several night ferries. Also, when you look at the schedule, pay attention to the specific place of departure and place of arrival, because there are different terminals, both in Hong Kong and in Macau, and accordingly, the schedule will differ depending on this. More on that below.

Hong Kong Macau Ferry Schedule

Terminals in Hong Kong and Macau

There are three terminals in Hong Kong from where ferries to Macau depart:
- Kowloon Peninsula (China Ferry Terminal) next to Tsim Sha Tsui metro station
- Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal next to Sheung Wan Station
international Airport Cheklapkok (SkyPier).

There are two terminals in Macau:
- On the Macau Peninsula (Macau Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal)
- On the island of Taipa (Taipa Ferry Terminal)

My ferry sailed from the Kowloon Peninsula to the Macau Peninsula, so I then went by bus to Taipa Island to Macau Airport (direct bus), left my things in the luggage room at the airport (there was a flight from Macau in the evening). And after that, again on the bus (the bus numbers are in Google maps) and went again to the island of Macau, where I walked around the city and looked at the casino. It would have been more convenient to sail to the island of Taipa right away, but there was no time for a ferry suitable for me, they go there much less often.
