In 2011, a giant outdoor escalator was built in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Medellin, Colombia's second largest city.

2 Bicycle escalator
The bicycle is a very popular means of transportation in Norway, especially in the city of Trondheim. However, a significant obstacle for cyclists is the steep slope of the Brübakken hill, which most of them are simply not able to overcome.
Therefore, it was Trondheim that became the first city in the world where a bike lift was built. The first prototype was installed back in 1993. Since then, the escalator has become a very popular tourist attraction, having already lifted more than 200,000 human-bicycles up to 130 meters without a single accident.
However, in 2012, the old proven design was dismantled and replaced with a more modern, advanced CycloCable system that meets increased safety standards.
3. The first underwater escalator
Visitors to the Hualien Farglory Ocean Park in Taiwan can take a short trip around the main aquarium in a wave-shaped underwater pressurized escalator, admiring sharks, rays and other exotic inhabitants of the deep sea swimming several meters above their heads.

4 The shortest escalator in the world
The world's shortest escalator is located in the underground floor of More's Department Store in Kawasaki, Japan. Consisting of only five steps, this escalator lifts its passengers only 83.4 centimeters. However, it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records back in 1989, so perhaps an even shorter and useless one has appeared somewhere since then.
5 The longest outdoor escalator in the world
In one of the fashionable districts of Hong Kong, built up with expensive housing even by local standards, called Mid-Levels, the population uses an unusual mode of transport - the world's longest system of street escalators.
The system has a length of eight hundred meters and a rise of about 135 meters from the bottom to the top. It consists of twenty escalators and three moving sidewalks connected by pedestrian crossings and fourteen entrances and exits.
The full route takes about twenty minutes. The system was built in 1993 to upgrade the transport links between the adjacent areas of Central and West Hong Kong Island.

This indicator allows this structure to claim a place in the Guinness Book of Records. In addition, this escalator has 4 lanes, a pair in each direction, which greatly simplifies the passage of passengers from the Park Pobedy station to the Kalininsko-Solntsevskaya branch station of the same name. At the same time, up to 800 people can be on this lifting and lowering facility, overcoming 68 meters in a vertical plane. It should be said that the terms in which this structure was erected are also record-breaking - 2 months, as opposed to 6, usually required.
According to Vitaly Shot, who led this project, the principle scheme of the escalator meets all international safety standards, including emergency stop and soft start. Control over the operation of all lanes of the lift is carried out from the dispatcher's room, located on Prospekt Mira. In fact, this is a twin of a similar structure at the station of the same name on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line, only 2 meters longer. The similarity is reflected in the design work - the same 92 fluorescent lamps as decoration.
Other "escalator" records
There are many other records in the world related not only to the length of the escalator. Some thanks to this are included in the Guinness Book of Records. For example, the smallest escalator in the world is located in one of the shopping centers in the Japanese city of Kawasaki. The height of this baby is just over 80 centimeters. Moreover, it is not known what exactly prompted the creators to install this creation (functionality is clearly not to blame here), but it really is popular. According to statistics, more than 50% of visitors to the shopping center must drive through it at least once.
In addition to escalators installed in their traditional places, that is, in the subway or shopping facilities, there are lifts built in non-standard conditions for them or having a non-standard design. For example, a huge escalator in the city of Medellin, in Colombia. The peculiarity of this building is that it was built in one of the poorest areas. The decision to build it was made by the city administration, based on the location of the area - on a fairly steep mountainside, which caused numerous complaints from residents about the difficulty of descending and ascending. The total length of 6 sections of this escalator is over 380 meters.
An interesting construction is a sealed underwater escalator installed in the Taiwan Aquarium. "Walking" on it, you can observe the inhabitants of the "underwater kingdom" in their natural habitat and, importantly, observe in safety.
