  • Altai is an amazing mountainous country located in the south of Siberia. High mountains with snow-white peaks, the majestic tranquility of the larch taiga, turquoise lakes and fast rivers... An amazing variety of landscapes! Shining snow-white peaks, alpine meadows, dense taiga and steppes - the mountains have it all. Altai is also rich in cultural and historical monuments. The Old Believers founded a unique culture in the local villages, and Roerich’s legacy attracts many of his admirers to the mountains. The best time to travel around Siberia is July and August. It is during this time that most of the active tours offered by our company occur. But you can go earlier - at the end of June. This will give you the opportunity to see the alpine meadows in bloom. Tours to Altai in winter 2019 are already on the website!

Getting to Altai is easy. Our company offers active tours to Altai with a flight from Moscow, which is inexpensive and lasts only 4 hours, as well as tours with flights from other Russian cities. From St. Petersburg and some other Russian cities you can fly to Altai by direct flights (Novosibirsk), but if this is not possible, you can take a train to Novosibirsk or Barnaul. Every year, at the airports of Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Gorno-Altaisk, new flights from Russian cities with which there were no air connections previously appear on the schedule.

There are many types of summer active recreation in the Altai Mountains. There are tours that involve both one type of activity (rafting, horseback riding tour, jeep tour), and combined ones, for example, horseback and water tours in Altai.

    Types of recreation in Altai

Altai is a Mecca for lovers of active recreation. Such a variety of active recreation types cannot be found in any other region of Russia! It is this diversity and transport accessibility that is the key to the popularity of the region.

Rafting is most popular on the Katun, Chuya, Bashkaus, and Chulyshman rivers. If you do not have experience in rafting on mountain rivers, it is better to start with rafting on the Katun. Altai rivers have rapids of 4-5 difficulty categories. The release of adrenaline into the blood is guaranteed!

Horseback riding tours to Altai are another popular type of outdoor activity. There are many popular equestrian routes: to the foot of Mount Belukha, to the Shavlinsky lakes, to the Multinsky lakes and many others. Traveling on horseback, you will see the whole variety of natural landscapes of Altai: from the steppes to the tundra zone, which you will get to while climbing the passes.

Trekking (hiking) in Altai is the most inexpensive type of travel in Altai. You can choose a beautiful trekking to Mount Belukha or an easy trekking to the Multinsky Lakes. On many trekking trips, our company offers to rent horses for transporting personal belongings. There are also classic mountain hikes with a backpack.

Excursion tours to Altai are the most expensive and comfortable type of vacation. You will be able to travel, staying in hotels, recreation centers and comfortable yurt camps. The tour will not be physically difficult and will be full of excursions.

Holidays in Altai in the summer of 2019 include not only group and individual tours, but also corporate programs. foxtravel has experience in organizing corporate tours. As a rule, this includes rafting, team building, visiting caves and historical monuments. The optimal duration of a corporate tour to Altai from Moscow is 4-5 days

Interesting are jeep tours that allow you to visit the hard-to-reach Ukok plateau or drive off-road to the mysterious Tyva. On the way you can see ancient mounds and places where shamans performed their rituals.

    Prices for holidays in Altai

Many clients who are not familiar with the specifics of active recreation, when first introduced to tours in Russia, have the feeling that they are expensive. However, this is not quite true. You need to understand that the cost of active tours includes three meals a day and all services along the route, in contrast to excursion programs abroad, where the client spends significant amounts of money on the spot. To save money, we advise you to buy tickets in January-March for the summer. They will cost much less.

Prices for tours to Altai from foxtravel are not the lowest. This is due to the fact that the company pays great attention to the quality of recreation and works officially, concluding contracts and paying taxes. We work only with partners that have been proven over the years.

    Welcome to Altai!

Have you ever dreamed of spending your summer vacation in the mountains? If you didn’t even dream of it and ended up on this site by accident, then believe me, this opportunity is worth considering! Mountains can give a variety of emotions - from calm contemplation and tranquility to delight and an adrenaline rush if you are rafting down a rapids river.

The Altai Mountains are unique. First of all, they are accessible. It takes only 4 hours by plane to get to Barnaul or Novosibirsk from Moscow. In the summer, the number of flights to Gorno-Altaisk increases, from which it is even closer to the mountains. Secondly, Altai is beautiful. These are Alpine-type mountains with pointed snow-white peaks, alpine meadows, turquoise lakes and colorful rivers. Thirdly, Altai is huge, and here you can find tours for every taste. You can go with a tent to wild, hard-to-reach places, or you can live in civilization at a camp site and enjoy all the benefits of civilization.

You can come to Altai again and again. Many people, having first chosen a simple tour, come to Altai again to look at another area or try a different type of outdoor activity. Those who were at the foot of Belukha go to the Shavlinsky lakes. Those who have tried rafting go on an expedition to the Ukok plateau.

The summer tour season in Altai begins in early July and ends in the first week of September. This is due to the fact that snow melts slowly in the mountains, and autumn comes earlier than on the plain. At the beginning of the season it is still cool, but there are not many tourists and the alpine meadows are in bloom. Between July 20 and August 20 is the peak season in Altai. On popular routes you will meet other groups every now and then. We do not recommend visiting popular routes at this time, such as trekking to Mount Belukha, for people who come to Altai for solitude.

The end of the season is a very beautiful time, but at night it is already cold. You can be prepared for the first snow to fall.

Many people ask whether there are many mosquitoes in Altai in the summer and should we be afraid of ticks? There are almost no mosquitoes in Altai in summer, and there is no need to be afraid of ticks. They are active mainly in June, when tours are not yet running.

Altai – one of the few stunningly beautiful corners of our planet. Located in the central part of Asia, this mountainous region is located in four countries at once - China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia. Until the early 90s, the Altai Territory was on the territory of the Russian Federation, which included the Gorno-Altai Autonomous Region. Since 1991, the autonomy gained independence from the Altai Territory and was renamed Altai Republic. However, travelers are not very interested in the peculiarities of the administrative division - they value the virginity of the nature of the Greater Altai with its mountain peaks, clear lakes and rivers. No less interesting are the inhabitants of Altai, whose unique culture makes this region truly unique.

Holidays in the Altai Mountains 2019

It is not surprising that Altai is a Turkic word that literally means “golden mountains,” because the mountains are the main attraction of this region. The most famous and beloved by tourists are the Katunsky and Chuysky ranges, namely the Aktru mountains (height 4 km 75 m) and Maashey (height 4 km 173 m). Mount Belukha, whose height is just over 4.5 km, is no less popular. This is the highest mountain in Siberia, the view of which is impossible not to admire. In addition, according to the Old Believers of the Uimon Valley, this is where the legendary country of Belovodye is located - a place where happiness and justice reign.

About the history of the Altai region

    History of the Altai region

The territory of Altai was inhabited by primitive people several thousand years ago. These regions are considered the cradle of nomadic culture and the Turkic language. The history of Altai is extremely rich - these lands remember the raids of the Huns, Dzungars and the armies of Genghis Khan, the rise and fall of many Turkic Khaganates, and in the Middle Ages Altai was part of the Great Silk Road.
Many historical events left an indelible mark on Altai culture in the form of rock paintings, ancient stone sculptures and many mounds (for example, the Pazyryk mounds dating back to the 6th-3rd centuries BC). The unique mounds in the Ukok highlands, where permafrost reigns, are world famous. Thanks to the permafrost conditions, in these mounds not only the mummified bodies of ancestors, but also a large number of ancient artifacts - wooden, felt, and leather products, as well as samples of clothing - were remarkably preserved. Since a quiet zone has been declared on the Ukok plateau, several dozen sensational mounds remain unexplored, hiding priceless pieces of history in their depths.

    Ethnography of Altai

The history of the settlement of Altai by Russians begins in 1633, with the arrival of a detachment of Cossacks commanded by Pyotr Sobansky, the son of a boyar, on the shores of Lake Altyn-Kel. It was here that the battle between the Cossacks and Mandrak’s detachment took place. After the victory over the local princeling, Sobansky erected a small fortress, which has not survived to this day. By the way, it was the Cossacks who renamed Altyn-Kel into Lake Teletskoye (Tele is a tribe that then lived on the shore of the lake). Nowadays, the village of Yailyu, which is located on the site of the long-destroyed Sobansky fort, is one of the famous tourist centers of Altai. Yailyu is famous for boat excursions along Lake Teletskoye, to the waterfall on the Korbu River flowing into it, as well as to the island of Kaim, located at the mouth of the Chulyshman River.
The indigenous inhabitants of Altai belong to the Mongoloid race and are descendants of such Turkic tribes as the Uyghurs, Kipchaks and Yenisei Kyrgyz. We should also not forget about the Mongolian tribes who lived in this territory for a long time. Today, these areas are home to a large number of different tribes, which are divided into northern and southern Altaians. Thus, the northern Altaians are the tribes of Chelkans, Tubulars, Kumandins and Shors who live in Kuzbass. The southern tribes include the Telenigits, Teleuts and Altai-Kizhi. Each tribe is divided into several clans (seoks), each of which is headed by a zaisan (elected head).
The people of Altai have their own religious ideas, which are impossible not to notice for a traveler. Thus, in many places you can see pyramids made of piles of stones (oboo), into which sticks with ribbons (kyira or dyalama) are stuck. It is common among steppe peoples to mark the location of sacred places in this way.
