The city of Imperia, sometimes called the "double city", is not even a hundred years old, it appeared in 1923 as a result of the merger of the neighboring towns of Oneglia (Oneglia) and Porto Maurizio (Porto Maurizio), which are currently the two main regions of the Empire .

Empire (Imperia) - a city with a population of 42,000 inhabitants and an area of 46 sq. km, the capital of the province of the same name. Empire City is located on west coast Liguria, known as the Riviera dei Fiori (Coast of Flowers). The province of Imperia borders France to the west, Piedmont to the north, and Savona to the east.

Oneglia, located on the east side of the river, is the more modern part of the city. Oneglia is the industrial center of the Empire, specializing in the production of olive oil, which has been made here since the 12th century, and pasta.

History of the Empire

On October 21, 1923, Victor Emanuel III officially approved the formation of the new city of Imperia by his royal decree. The text of this decree can still be seen today on a large fresco in the hall of the municipality.

Since the inhabitants of both settlements, located at a distance of three kilometers from each other, did not express a great desire for unification and neither of the towns wanted to be the seat of city government, it was decided to place the municipality between them, about halfway between Onelia and Porto Maurizio. Since then, a feature of the Empire is that the administrative center of the city is essentially on the outskirts, away from the two main urban areas and approximately in the same place where Oneglia and Porto Maurizio sorted out relations with each other for many years, including with the help of weapons. The decree from above forced the previously warring towns to seek ways of reconciliation and learn to jointly manage the Empire. A plan was even developed to build a large commercial and tourist port that would unite both areas, and a plan to build a central station, from where trains would depart for Turin.

During the Second World War, the city was repeatedly bombed, and in May 1945, the Empire was occupied by French troops for about a month.

In the post-war years, the city was chaotically built up, in the 70s, between Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, a long promenade named after Amerigo Vespucci was built, which locals dubbed the "superstroke". The city began to develop actively in tourist destination, it was again decided to return to the construction of a tourist port, which was inaugurated in 2009.

What to see in the Empire

The city was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and is considered one of the youngest in Italy. However, the Empire was not founded on empty place, and on the site of two ancient settlements - Oneglia and Porto Maurizio, from which the city inherited many sights and interesting places, therefore, Imperia is rightly considered one of the most beautiful and cozy towns on the coast of the Ligurian Sea.

Conventionally, the Empire is divided into 2 regions, which are naturally separated by a river. On one side is a former settlement Oneglia, which is famous for the production of local varieties of olive oil. On the other hand - Porto Maurizio, which represents Old city with narrow streets, old quarters and authentic sights.

Looking around the historical center of the Empire, it is worth paying attention to the cathedrals preserved here. For example, Saint Mauritius Cathedral, or as it is called in Italy, San Maurizio, is considered the largest Catholic cathedral in Liguria. The construction of the cathedral dates back to the middle of the 18th century, it is made in the neoclassical style, the exteriors are decorated with columns, and the interiors with sculptures and paintings.

If the Cathedral of San Maurizio is located in the Porto Maurizio area, then another important religious monument is Cathedral of Saint Giovanni(San Giovanni) is located on the opposite bank - in the Oneglia area and is built in a lush baroque style. Of course, the Cathedral of San Giovanni cannot compete with San Maurizio in size or grandeur, but it certainly deserves attention with its stained glass windows, frescoes and elegant decorations of interiors and exteriors. The church was also built in the middle of the 18th century and is located on the pedestrian square of the same name.

Villa and Gardens Grock- Another place of attraction for tourists in the Empire. Here, on the territory of the complex, you can see a three-story mansion, which houses the museum of the famous Swiss clown Grock, who was the owner of these territories. In addition, it is worth taking a walk in the gardens surrounding the villa. In addition to lush vegetation, here you can see sculptural compositions, columns, gazebos, fountains, arches, bridges and even a small lake, so Grok gardens are a great place for hiking in any season. The alleys of the garden are decorated with cedars and cypresses.

Once in the Empire, it would be unfair not to visit olive oil museum for which the region is so famous. The Olive Museum will tell you about the centuries-old history of the development and creation of olive oil, and in the adjacent garden, where centennial olive trees grow, you can see ancient mills built in the 17th-19th centuries.
