Abu al-Yaman Abdurrahman (Abd ar-Rahman) Rafat al-Basha was born on Ramadan 17, 1338 AH. (April 4, 1920) in the town of Eriha (emphasis on "and") near the city of Idlib in Syria. His father died when Abdurrahman was still a child, and his grandfather, who was a khatib and teacher of religion in Erich, took care of him.

Since this topic has now acquired the greatest relevance in my answer, I consider it necessary to clarify the main points that, with the permission of Allah, can help the Russian-speaking reader understand this issue:

1. Sources of the book. In the original Arabic, after the story of tabi'in is given, footnotes mention a list of books where the reader can learn more about him. Moreover, these books represent all the main historical and biographical works of Muslim scholars. For example, "at-Tabaqat al-Kubra" by Ibn Sa'd, "Hilya al-awliya" by al-Isbahani, "Siyar a'lam an-nubala" by al-Dhahabi, "Tarikh" by at-Tabari, "Tahzib at-Tahzib" by Ibn Hajar and etc. Taking into account the fact that the author does not just provide a list of books, but scrupulously indicates references (volume, page, etc.) that contain biographical information about a particular tabi'in, I have every reason to conclude that when working on my Dr. al-Basha studied all these sources in detail and selected material from them. In addition, this conclusion allows me to make my own reading of the biography of some tabiins in these sources (in particular, "Siyar a'lam al-Nubala" by Imam al-Dhahabi) and a comparative analysis of the Arabic original of the book with a translation into Russian.

2. As the title of the book suggests, its content has been adapted to preserve the main and famous moments from the life of the Tabi'in, which are contained in biographical works. Each section of a certain chapter is connected with the next one for a better perception of the material by a simple reader. Of course, we do not know the thoughts of the Tabi'in, his feelings, the peculiarities of the environment, natural phenomena, etc., unless he himself tells about them. However, the presence of such moments in the book does not affect the reliability of the information presented. On the contrary, they fit perfectly into the context of the narrative, conveying the atmosphere of an irretrievably bygone era, which, through artistic means of expression, allows us to feel even more sharply the way of life and motives of behavior of the best generations of our community. Thus, this book should be perceived not as a collection of hadiths from which Sharia legal provisions are derived, but as one of the genres of Muslim historiographic literature containing edification, examples for imitation and useful lessons for all of us.

3. According to the beliefs of the adherents of the Sunnah and the united Muslim community (Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-jamaa), the only book that is flawless and ideal is the Scripture of Allah Almighty. After the Qur'an, Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslimah are recognized as the most reliable books. As for all other works, they contain both reliable and weak information. This also applies to hadiths. Therefore, if even in the collections of hadiths there are weak reports, then what can be said about historical works and biographical dictionaries? Therefore, here we must look at the basis: what prevails in such and such a work? If it is dominated by reliable information, confirmed by other sources, then at least it is unreasonable to reject it. This is especially true for historical or biographical books, where, for objective reasons, the criteria for selecting authenticity are not as strict as in collections of hadiths.

4. Almost all of us went to public school where we studied history written by non-Muslims. Our consciousness was formed not under the influence of Islamic sources, but on the basis of information gleaned from the school curriculum. As a result, many historical events we take it for granted and do not even think about their reliability: we just believe that it was so, and that’s it. However, you should be aware that any historical work written by generally recognized Muslim historians (at-Tabari, Ibn Asakir, Ibn Kathir, etc.) and any collections that contain references to the sources of Muslim authors are much more reliable than historical books written by non-Muslims, especially often unknown to anyone. In addition to the need to verify the information reported by non-Muslims (remember the verse: “ O those who believe! If the wicked bring you news, make sure(in its veracity)”, surah al-Khujurat, verse 6), the main thing that distinguishes Muslim historians from non-Muslim ones is the presence of a chain of transmitters (isnad). Authoritative Muslim historians often cite isnad, while this approach is completely absent from non-Muslim historians. This, by the way, distinguishes Muslims from non-Muslims not only in matters of history, but also in religion in general. Therefore, let's try to change our minds and, on the contrary, we will trust the events that Muslim authors convey in their books, especially such authoritative ones as at-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, al-Dhahabi and others, and not unfoundedly question them intelligence.

5. Without at all denying the presence of weak messages in this book, I urge you to be guided in this matter by the hadith of the prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: "The proof of the accusation lies with the accuser." No one is immune from mistakes, except the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, including the author of the book. However, if someone claims that there is weak information in the book, he must confirm his words and provide evidence. This will be a manifestation of his sincere attitude towards the tabi'in, the author of the collection and all Muslims in general. Of course, these proofs will be taken into account, included in subsequent editions of the book and, most importantly, rewarded by Allah Almighty.

6. As follows from the preface to the 15th Arabic edition of the book (“Dar al-Adab al-Islamiy”, 1418/1997), the compiler himself did not stop working on it: “In this new edition, which absorbed the previous six editions of the book, additions and corrections were made that the author left, may Allah have mercy on him.

7. Finally, each person has a choice where to get information from. I am convinced that the publication of the book about the Tabieen in Russian (and its audio version) will, with the permission of Allah, bring great benefit to Russian-speaking Muslims who do not speak Arabic.
