But the main thing is the limitless possibilities of the most interesting ski safaris to neighboring regions and valleys: almost half a thousand kilometers of interconnected slopes!

Geography

Located in the northwestern part of the Dolomites, the Val Gardena valley administratively belongs to South Tyrol.

From the city of Bolzano, the capital of the province, it is separated by 40 km, from Verona - 190 km, from Innsbruck, the capital of the Austrian Tyrol - only 120 km. Like, until 1918, Val Gardena was part of Austria-Hungary. The German language here and today is more common than Italian; all geographical names (settlements, peaks, passes, etc.) on the maps are presented in two versions.

The length of the valley is a little over 20 km. It stretches east from the A22 highway leading to the border Brenner Pass, and rests on the Sella mountain group (3151), to the south of which rises Sassolungo / Langkofel (3181), the "Long Stone" - a kind of symbol of Gardena.

The entrance to the valley is a narrow gorge, along which you need to climb from 470 to 1200 meters above sea level. To the right, behind the sheer wall of Monte Piz (2109), there is a high plateau Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm - German) with an area of more than fifty square kilometers; to the left, to the rocks of Seceda (2518), there is a short dead-end valley Annatal. Further, gradually gaining height, Gardena either expands or narrows, but nowhere becomes flat. The picturesque relief is complemented by the rapids of the river Grodnerbach running along its bottom. At the end of Val Gardena, to the northeast of it, is the picturesque Vallunga valley: this is the territory natural park Puez Odle. Beyond the village of Plan de Gralba (1800), the road forks: in the northeast direction it rises to Passo Gardena (2137), in the south - to Passo Sella (2244).

Resorts

Three in Val Gardena resort villages. The largest of them in size, Ortisei (St. Ulrich - German), lies at an altitude of 1236 m. Above the valley, on its northern side, is Santa Cristina (1428). Deep in the Gardena, at the foot of the Sella Gruppe, is the Selva-Wolkenstein (1563).

Ortisei - perfect place for family vacation with kids. There are many comfortable hotels with swimming pools and spas, shops and restaurants. From the resort center to the ski lifts - 5-10 minutes walk, from more remote areas you can take a bus. To the gondolas pulling into the Seceda sector (2518), several successive escalators are delivered from the center of Ortisei.

S. Cristina is the smallest resort in the region. When choosing where to stay, you should keep in mind that the eastern area of this village, which is called Plan da Tieja (this is where the gondola lifts and Ronda Express metro stations are located), is actually part of the Selva - although it is about 5 km from here, over an hour walk.

Selva Gardena is most sought after by advanced skiers primarily because of its proximity to the Sella mountain group. From it it is convenient to start many hours of ski trips to neighboring regions - Alta Badia, Arabba, Val di Fassa. The resort has a developed tourism infrastructure. There are a dozen quality hotels ****, 40 hotels and pensions ***, a large number of apartments for rent; a total of about 8000 seats for guests.

It should be noted that there are no free ski-buses in Val Gardena. A 7-day pass for buses running around the resorts, as well as between Selva and Ortisei, costs 6 euros.

Val Gardena! How beautiful this phrase sounds, how beautiful this alpine valley is from all points of view. It is possible to devote a separate book to its description, but we, limited by the narrow framework of the skiing essay, will try to concisely highlight the main aspects in order to give impetus to a further more detailed acquaintance with the details already in place.

"Val" in Italian means "valley", "Gardenia" in the local Ladin language - "fence" or "fence". A narrow and steeply serpentine upward (climb about 1000 meters) valley goes to the right of the highway connecting the Italian Bolzano with the Austrian Innsbruck. Administratively, the resort is located in the Alto Adige region, in the province of South Tyrol, which until 1918 was part of the Habsburg Empire, which left and continues to leave its mark on the local way of life. In particular, this is manifested in the way of life of the local population and traditions, which are much closer to Austrian than Italian. For skiers, this is important in the sense that the quality of service here is similar to the Austrian one, and many people recognize Austria as the best in terms of the level of the ski product. However, this does not apply to après ski, which is much quieter and calmer here than in some daring Austrian villages. In the evening after skiing, it is customary to visit one of the restaurants, but if you wish, you will find local flavor in the form of cheerful Tyrolean songs and dances in some bars, for example, in La Stua in Selva at the finish line with Ciampinoi.

From a skiing point of view, Val Gardena is part of the Dolomites Superski alliance, which unites twelve resorts with a common ski pass and ranks first in the world in terms of the total mileage of slopes. When we talk about the Dolomites included in the list world heritage UNESCO, you always have to use excellent epithets: the largest region, the most big mountains the most beautiful views. And this is really not an exaggeration: the Dolomites are recognized by many as the most beautiful mountains in the Alps, majestic views of stone giants, especially in the rays of the setting sun, are classic Alpine landscapes and are included in all photo albums dedicated to popular European mountains.

Not all regions of the Dolomites Superski are interconnected by roads; driving from one to another takes from half an hour to two or three hours. But this does not apply to the Sellaronda region, which in turn includes Val Gardena. It has 400 kilometers of connected trails that you can navigate without removing your skis, visiting, in addition to Gardena, the slopes of the resorts of Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa.

Let's focus on the skiing opportunities directly Val Gardena. 175 kilometers are offered for skiing in the valley ski slopes with a good combination of beautiful forest and open slopes. The region unites three towns: Ortisei (Ortisei, 1236 m), San Cristina (S. Cristina, 1428 m) and Selva (Selva, 1563 m). Each of them has lifts to the ski area, which in general can be considered inseparable, with the exception of Ortisei, where the ski slopes are located on both sides of the city. To get there from one side of the valley to the other, you need to use an underground tunnel with a travelator, and then walk another three hundred meters on foot. You can also use bus service between the main lifts of the cities, but it can hardly be called convenient due to the low frequency of flights, and besides, you will have to pay for the fare. In general, we move only on skis, lifts and sometimes on our own two feet. By the way, in Selva there are hotels located right on the track or next to it, which allows you to ski-in/ski-out.

So let's start with beginners. For them, one of the best "training" sites in the Alps is offered - the Alpe di Siusi plateau (1700-2210 m) above Ortisei. Large, spacious, sunny. Trails with smooth terrain that do not require much effort to maintain balance. You can call this a family place, where mom, dad and children ski for the first time. And it happens in the majestic scenery of the surrounding mountains. A great start to your skiing career. The mileage of the slopes here is sufficient to make small ski safaris that will delight skiers who are not yet very sophisticated.

As you gain experience and gain confidence in the technique, when the red runs are no longer scary, you can move to the other side of the valley and climb to the top of Seceda (2518 m). There are excellent wide trails of medium difficulty in the direction of San Cristina, it is quite possible to stay here for half a day to “drive”. Having diluted this pleasure, we recommend a wonderful eleven-kilometer (the longest in the region) descent back to Ortisei. It is not very wide, since in its main part it passes through the forest, winding along the slope in small zigzags. But it is very beautiful and there are two local attractions on it: a beautiful, several meters high, frozen waterfall and closer to the bottom of the track on the right side is Anna’s cafe, where you can have a delicious lunch or finish your ski day with dinner. Popular and colorful place. A word of advice: ride this track at least once not at the end of the day, but at least before lunch, while it is still not very broken - you will get great pleasure.

Well, with skiing on the rise, it's time to move further up the valley and visit the slopes of San Cristina and Selva. To do this, we will use the local "metro" - an underground rail funicular that connects the northern and southern slopes above San Cristina. We will climb to the top of Ciampinoi (2254 m), from where breathtaking views of the local attraction open - Sassolungo Peak (Sassolungo, 3181 m, "sasso lungo" in Italian means "long stone"), from here there are several options for descent. First of all, self-confident skiers should stay on the slopes of the Ski World Cup, which takes place here every year around the Christmas holidays. It is called Saslong A and leads back to San Cristina, with a height difference of more than 800 meters. If you are not completely confident in your abilities, you can go down the parallel red option (Saslong B), which is also very good. Closer to the finish line of the red line, right next to the descent, stands the Fischburg castle, built in 1641 and serving as the summer hunting residence of the Wolkenstein princes, who at that time ruled in these places (by the way, the Austrian name of the Selva is Wolkenstein). Here, above San Cristina, there are several excellent trails from the top of Mont de Seura (2117) to the Monte Pana plateau (1636), located away from the main routes - they are usually not crowded and not very broken.

In Plan de Gralba

Very pleasant red and blue slopes in the area of Plan de Gralba (Plan de Gralba, 1800 m). Not very long, with a drop of about 400 meters, but quite wide and comfortable even for beginners. Only it will be difficult for them to get here from Selva, since for this they need to go down from the top of Ciampinoi, the exits from which are rather steep in the upper part. For beginners, skiing in Selva and Kristina will generally be difficult, unless you are skiing for the first time and do not plan to spend your entire vacation on a training slope - for this case there is an excellent site in Selva right in the city, served by several tow bars. The return red and black pistes from Ciampinoi to Selva are good in themselves for confident skiers, but, unfortunately, they break up quickly due to the heavy load.

And finally, the last skiing area is the slopes going to the Selva from the top of Dantercepies (2300 m). With a very pleasant medium slope, long, rolling, but with them the same problem as with the slopes on Ciampinoi - they break up quickly, as they lie directly on the Sellaronda route. It is best to ski here in the morning, before lunch.

We walked through all the skiing areas of Val Gardena, but this of course does not mean that you will ski only here. Other regions of Sellaronda, connected to it by ski lifts, are no less attractive, and for sure you will make more than one voyage to the Val di Fassa, Alta Badia, Araba with its famous Marmolada glacier. Amazing opportunities for building ski safari routes. Most likely, you will return to these parts more than once, because from the first visit, the carousel of Sellaronda is just starting to unwind.

In the meantime, the first trip ends, what to bring home from here? The South Tyrol region is famous for its products. For example, every tenth apple in Europe is grown here, and in accordance with the highest environmental standards, which is facilitated by the local climate - a large number sunny days, clean mountain air. In every town you will find shops with local specialties, many of which will surely appeal to you: in addition to apples (in dried form and in the form of juices), these are specks, wines, the famous grappa (the cooking tradition of which originated here in the thirteenth century) with a variety of flavors, honey, canned vegetables and fruits, and so on and so forth. Abundance can easily make your head spin. And if you still taste several varieties of grappa, kindly offered for testing by the hospitable owners of food stalls, then life in general can be considered a decisive success. In general, prepare free space in your suitcases. Do not forget to also buy some kind of wooden interior item, at least a small figurine of an animal or a saint. Wood carving traditions in Gardena are very strong, in every city there are several shops-workshops where the process of “animating” wooden blanks takes place right before your eyes.

Today, the resort continues to combine aspiration with progress, maintaining and developing excellent skiing and, in general, sports infrastructure, with fidelity to traditions: the Ladin language (related to the Romansh group), local crafts and farming, regularly held folklore holidays and festivals - a direct confirmation of this. “Striving for the future, paying tribute to the past” - perhaps this could be the motto of these regions.

Val Gardena is a very sunny place, which is confirmed both by statistics and our skiing experience. There is always a good snow cover here, which is supported by an excellent system of artificial snow in occasional winters with little snow. Local slopes are suitable for skiers of any level, the main thing is to choose the right city for accommodation (for beginners - Ortisei, for experienced ones - Cristina and Selva). Except that snowboarders are not very fond of local tracks, saying that it is not convenient for them everywhere and there are many gentle slopes on the Sellaronda. This seems to be a certain amount of snobbery, although there are really not very many snowboarders on the slopes. Well, let's leave it to everyone to decide where it is better to ride, on our own just say that Val Gardena is ours favorite place in the Alps.
