Archaeological excavations suggest that the first settlements appeared on the territory of modern Rethymnon in the Minoan era. Later, during the Greco-Roman period, the city grew and became an important shopping mall, and during the Venetian occupation, it played the role of the cultural center of the island.

The 16th century is the time of the greatest magnificence of Rethymnon, when its fame as the center of science and art spread far beyond the country. However, already in the 17th century, the Turks invaded here, turning all the churches into mosques and predetermining the course of development of the entire region for 200 years.

In 1898, Crete gains autonomy, and in 1913 the island was annexed to Greece. After 10 years, there were practically no Turks and Greeks left on its territory who converted to Islam - they were all resettled, and Greeks from Asia Minor came in their place.

The rapid development of the economy and culture, which could be observed in Rethymnon, was suspended during the Nazi occupation, but the city quickly recovered from the experience and is now considered one of the most the best resorts Crete.

Labyrinths of cobbled streets, stone houses, whose walls are entwined with grapes - in all this one can feel the influence of different cultures: Venetian and Turkish. This is where most of the architectural monuments Rethymnon, so no wonder Old city called an open-air museum.

The most recognizable and most grandiose building and of all that is on the island of Crete is the fortress of Fortezza (Fortezza). One of the most romantic places in Rethymnon is the Rimondi Fountain. There is a belief that if lovers drink from it, they are destined to get married soon. In fact, the structure served a more practical role: it provided water to the whole city. The fountain is located on Platanou Square and cannot be confused with any other: it is decorated with four columns with capitals, and water is supplied from stone lion's mouths.

Not far from the port, on the corner of Arkadiou and Paleologou streets, is the famous Venetian Loggia. Now the building houses a souvenir shop, but once important political issues were resolved here.

Nightlife in Rethymnon

Rethymno is famous for its active nightlife, full of various entertainments. So, most of the cafes located along the waterfront only begin their work after sunset. Here you can taste fish dishes, as well as get acquainted with local cuisine. The old town, in turn, attracts with traditional taverns where folk music plays.

The work of most clubs depends on the season. For example, in winter night life is concentrated in the historical center of Rethymno, on Melissaunou street. In the summer, when the influx of tourists is especially large, establishments located outside the city take over the baton, in resorts such as Platanias and Misiriya.

When is the best time to go to Rethymno

The tourist season opens in Rethymnon in April and lasts until winter, when it starts to rain in Crete. Already in spring, the thermometer rises to 20-25 ° C, then the temperature rises, but even the hottest summer is easily tolerated due to the fact that the beaches are blown by the winds.

Those tourists who chose Rethymno not only for warm sea and sandy beaches, they can come here in March - that's when the famous carnival starts, turning the city into a huge dance floor for three weeks. At the same time, the program is very diverse: in addition to the parade, tastings of traditional Cretan dishes and wine are held here, theatrical performances are shown, song and dance competitions are organized.

Treasure hunts are also held as part of the carnival. To find a hidden treasure, you need to know the history of the city, to be well versed in the monuments of history and architecture, so it will be difficult for an uninitiated person. However, even the opportunity to watch how the locals compete with each other will be great entertainment. Those tourists who dare to take part in the treasure hunt can win a paid vacation at a local resort.

Summer in Rethymno attracts not only lovers beach holiday: two festivals take place at this time of the year: "Renaissance" and the wine festival. The first is devoted to art: famous musical and theatrical figures come to the city, concerts are organized, as well as plays by famous Cretan and world playwrights are staged, and movie screenings are organized. During the wine festival, the city garden is filled with the sounds of folk music, and all adult guests can taste various varieties of the noble drink, absolutely free of charge.

How to get to Rethymnon

There is no international airport in Rethymnon, so you will have to get to it with transfers, for example, through Heraklion or Chania. Regular flights fly from Moscow in this direction. The rest of the way to the city can be done by bus. Arriving in Greece at the height of the tourist season, you need to take care of tickets in advance, otherwise you will have to stand all the way (78 km). In addition, you can take a taxi - the fare will cost about 70 euros.

Another option that is especially suitable for those who travel with a large group is car rental. Both from Heraklion and from Chania you need to follow the "New National Road" (New National Road) E75.

Those who are more comfortable flying to Athens will be able to sail to Rethymnon by ferry.

From the history.

Modern Rethymno built on ruins ancient city Rithymno, erected in the late Minoan period. On the site of one of the modern sleeping areas of the city, Mastaba, Late Minoan burials were found. The city flourished during the Mycenaean era, but in the 3rd century AD. For unknown reasons, Rethymnon has lost its significance and is mentioned in historical sources as a large village. Despite this, the city retains its independence and continues to mint its coin.

During the Byzantine period, Rethymno continued to be inhabited, as evidenced by the elements of Roman and Byzantine mosaics found here. At the time of the Venetians, the city flourished - sailors used the harbor of Rethymno as an intermediate point on the road from Chania to Heraklion. In this regard, during the time of the Venetians, the city expanded and received the status of the administrative center of the region. The Old Town in Rethymno has preserved almost all the buildings erected by the Venetians since the 16th century and is considered to be one of the best preserved cities in Crete.

Modern Rethymno.

Today Rethymnon is the third largest city in Crete with a population of about 35,000. The modern city stretches from the historical center to the east, along the large sandy beach, which attracted streams of tourists to Rethymno. Unlike its neighbors, Chania to the west and Heraklion to the east, Rethymno boasts a cozy 3-kilometer promenade and beautiful beach marked with a blue flag.

In summer, Rethymnon becomes not only noisy resort town but also a place of pilgrimage for environmental activists. The fact is that sea turtles, listed in the Red Book, go to lay their eggs on the city and suburban beaches to lay their eggs. Young conservationists from different countries every day they comb the beaches in search of new clutches, carefully fencing them so that tourists cannot accidentally harm the young offspring of these amazing animals.

Arkadi street

locals Rethymno is called the city of brides, and active life in it does not subside with the closing of the tourist season. The fact is that in the nearest suburbs of Rethymno there are humanities faculties of the University of Crete, so in winter there are always a lot of young people here. Most of the cafes, bars and restaurants of the old town and on the waterfront remain open during the winter months, filled daily with noisy Greek youth coming from all over the country.

Here, in Rethymnon, the second largest carnival in Greece takes place, completing the celebration, known to us as Shrove Tuesday, the week before Lent. The carnival gathers tourists from all over the country, and many Europeans who are in love with Crete come to see this bright action. The city, local residents, tourists put on bright outfits and celebrate the arrival of spring, which is already gaining momentum in these latitudes - as a rule, during the days of the carnival, it is already possible to walk in light clothes with short sleeves during the day, although you should take something with you warmer for the evening.

Walk around Rethymno.

(1) Pasha Kara Musa Mosque

Devoting one day of your holiday to Rethymnon is absolutely essential, especially if you are vacationing in the immediate suburbs. Rethymno has well-developed municipal parking lots, the most convenient of which are located near the two harbors of the city. Both parking lots are paid, but the cost is quite reasonable - an hour of parking costs about 1 euro, and a daily rate that takes effect after 5 hours of parking will cost you 6-7 euros.

Let's start our tour of the city from its eastern side. Having entered the city from the side of Heraklion along the New National Road, or along the Old, from the suburbs, turn onto the embankment - so you will have a chance to see the city in all its glory. Move along the embankment towards the Fortress until you see the entrance to the port on the right hand. Leaving the car at the port, continue your journey towards the old city.

Square of the Unknown Soldier

Literally 200 meters from the parking lot in the port is one of the main squares of the city - the square of the Unknown Soldier. You can continue walking along the embankment, but this way you will not see the old city and all its attractions. It is better to turn onto Arkadi Street, which runs parallel to the embankment. You go to it directly from the monument to the unknown soldier of the Second World War.

At the beginning of Arkadi Street, on your left, there will be a monument to a mixture of Venetian and Turkish architectural styles - the Pasha Kara Musa Mosque (1) (Kara Musa Pasha Mosque), built by the Venetians and existed for a long time as the monastery of St. Barbara, but after the capture of Crete by the Turks, it was converted into a mosque . At the moment, the mosque is closed to the public, but is perfectly visible through the fence.

(2) Rethymno Cathedral

Continuing to walk along Arkadi past many souvenir shops and shops located in Venetian houses, soon on the left you will see a square with Cathedral cities (2). Opposite the church is a small church museum and the residence of the Metropolitan of Rethymno.

Walking further into the city center along Arcadi, the keen eye can catch a small street that turns left behind the gloomy St. Francis Cathedral (5) and leads to a wall with an arch, richly decorated with a bas-relief depicting bunches of grapes. The Cathedral of St. Francis has been preserved in excellent condition, but now it is not a functioning church, but a cultural center where various exhibitions and cultural events are held.

Passing through the arch with a bas-relief, you will find yourself in a large square, filled with children having fun both day and night. To your left there will be an old Turkish school for girls, which is still operating today, but already as Primary School(first 6 classes). On the right you will see the Neratze Mosque (6) (Neratze Mosque). During the reign of the Venetians, the Neradze Mosque was a church dedicated to St. Barbara, but was converted into a mosque after the capture of the island by the Turks. In 1890, engineer G. Daskalakis designed and built a large minaret with two stone balconies near the mosque. Today, the mosque is used as a conservatory, and the minaret is clad in supporting scaffolding, as it tilted as a result of numerous, though not strong, earthquakes. Many locals call this minaret their own, "Rethymno's Leaning Tower of Pisa".

(14) Rimondi Fountain

Passing by the Neradze Mosque and turning left, you will reach the building of the Museum of Folk Art of Rethymnon. Turning to the right of the mosque, you will come out again on Arkadi, but we would advise you to go one more block along the narrow lanes parallel to Arkadi. When you reach the next intersection, on the left you will see a small square near the Church of the Virgin of the Angels, and turning right towards the sea you will get to the Rimondi fountain (14) (Rimondi fountain), built in 1629 by the rector of the city A. Rimondi.

Moving further from the fountain towards the sea, after 300 meters you will come to an intersection with a Venetian loggia (15)(Loggia), built in the 16th century, on the corner. In Turkish times, the loggia was used as a mosque; a minaret was also attached to it. Now an exhibition and sale of copies of archaeological finds is organized in the loggia.

Turning right, behind the loggia, you will again find yourself on Arkadi street, but from its other side. Walking straight ahead, without turning, you will find yourself on the promenade, rich with cafeterias on the right and taverns in the old harbor on the left. Taverns in the Venetian port will lure you in all languages of the world and delight you with the views of freshly caught seafood, but it’s worth making a reservation right away - this place is 100% touristic (not a single tavern in the old port works in winter) and the prices are also somewhat overpriced. Therefore, we would recommend stopping for lunch in one of the cozy establishments of the old city, but not on the embankment of the old port.

(15) Venetian Loggia in Rethymno

Then you can go deep into the old city, to the fortress of Fortezza (10) and the archaeological museum of Rethymno (11), located opposite the entrance to the fortress, or get off at modern city to walk around botanical garden Rethymnon (22), but these are completely different stories and we will tell about this on the pages of our guide later.

Do not forget that shops (not tourist destination) work according to a schedule that is not easy to get used to from the first time. And here I would like to note that Rethymnon is beautiful in the rays of the summer sun, and no less charming in the light of the moon.

Rethymno beach on Greek island Crete is famous for clean and spacious coastline with fine sand and clear water that changes color depending on the weather from bright turquoise to dark indigo. The beach area, located 1 km from the city center, stretches for 13 km along the bay: from the Venetian pier to the east up to the village of Skaleta.

Infrastructure

The municipal beach of the resort is separated from the road by green lawns and is well equipped: lifeguard towers, sun loungers and umbrellas, changing cabins, showers, toilets and taps for washing feet are installed. Sports and playgrounds are equipped, cafes, bars and water sports centers are open.

Marine entertainment:

  • parasailing;
  • riding on "bananas" and "cheesecakes";
  • rental of water skis, catamarans, jet skis and canoes;
  • boat trips;
  • fishing;
  • diving and snorkeling.

Wooden decks laid on the sand make it much easier to move along the beach, especially with prams. Wi-Fi access is available in a number of locations.

There are no closed private beaches in the town. Hotels rent sections of the coast, but admission is free everywhere, the fee is charged only for the rental of beach equipment (for "their" guests, this service is provided by hotels for free). At the same time, "foreign" guests are not forbidden to take any place they like on the sand for sunbathing, sitting on a towel or mat. In order to save money, you can buy an umbrella and a deck chair in the store, as the cost will be comparable to the daily rental of a similar set on the beach (7-10 euros).

The epicenter of evening life is the Eleftherios Venizelos promenade, named after the Greek politician who served as prime minister several times from 1910 to 1933. The Athenian bears the same name international Airport is the largest in Greece. With the onset of darkness, the street is closed to traffic and turns into a promenade, and tables of numerous cafes and taverns appear on the sidewalks. Dinner for two with drinks will cost an average of 20 euros.

Beach Hotels in Rethymno

The city of 30,000 people offers tourists a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets, from guesthouses to luxurious villas and apartments with modern or authentic interiors. Hotels on the first line have their own equipped areas on the beach.

Since October, hotels have been announcing the season of discounts, but you should not count on super low prices: the resort is in demand all year round, since the tourist attraction of the region is due to the rich history and many architectural monuments, carnivals and festivals are also held here.

If you download the My Crete Guide application on Google Play or the App Store before the trip (there is a menu in Russian), then you will have a map of Rethymnon with all the sights and cafes at hand.

Weather and season on Rethymnon beach

In Rethymno, washed by the Aegean (Cretan) Sea, hot and dry summers, the climate is closer to the Mediterranean.

The average air temperature fluctuates around +30°C. The sun shines for over 300 days a year. In winter, the thermometer does not drop below +10°C. The swimming season lasts from the end of May to October. Water warms up to +25…+28°C.

Like the entire northern coast of Crete, the beach is not protected from the winds, so at times the sea is worried, but mostly calm reigns in the summer. The energy of the waves is extinguished thanks to the installed breakwaters.

Beach Features

Despite the large number of tourists, the coastal strip is never crowded. The entrance to the sea is gentle, the depth increases gradually. The shallow water ends at a distance of 20-30 m from the shore, which makes the beach ideal for families with children and people who cannot swim. For swimming, it is recommended to use aquashoes, since the waves wash up a layer of pebbles at the edge of the surf, and there is also a risk of stepping on a sea urchin.

The bay was chosen by relic big-headed turtles Caretta, listed in the Red Book as a vulnerable species. Zoologists believe that these reptiles appeared on Earth in the era of dinosaurs and have lived on the planet for at least 95 million years. The body weight of loggerheads is from 80 to 200 kg, and the length of the shell reaches 1-1.5 m. On the front flippers - a pair of claws. Adult individuals annually return to the place where they were born to give birth to new offspring. Females from May to July get out at night on land to dig holes and lay eggs.

Volunteers surround the nests with protective tapes and warning signs; in total, they manage to find about 400 nests. At the end of summer, you can see how hatched turtles rush to the water together. The population recovery process is controlled by the staff of the Archelon Sea Turtles Rescue Center, equipping safe corridors for the cubs. The difficulty lies in the fact that babies cannot be picked up and taken to the sea, they must find their own way.

The blue flag fluttering on the beach of Rethymno is a kind of quality mark, which is as prestigious to receive as a Michelin star for a restaurant. Since 1987, the international certification program has been attended by best beaches peace. Flying a Blue Flag requires over 30 criteria to be verified, and the requirements are getting more and more complex. The award is awarded only for one bathing season, and the next year the procedure will have to be repeated anew, proving to the commission the high level of service provided. The time for renewal of certificates falls on May. In addition to the purity of the water and the coastal zone, comfort for vacationers should be ensured.

Standards for obtaining the Blue Flag:

  • free access to the beach for everyone;
  • there are toilets, showers and changing rooms;
  • water is tested weekly in the laboratory;
  • garbage is regularly removed and sorted for further processing;
  • the sand is cleaned at the end of the day;
  • lifeguards and doctors are on duty;
  • urgent health care is in place;
  • motor transport does not move along the beach;
  • the coastal strip is not used for walking pets;
  • the beach is accessible for people with disabilities;
  • the territory is equipped with children's and sports grounds;
  • food outlets and entertainment centers operate.

In fact, Blue Flag is an environmental program based on the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem, natural phenomena and the biological diversity of the area, and Rethymnon Beach fully fulfills its tasks.

What to see in Rethymnon

Beach holidays can be alternated with visits to local attractions both independently and with the help of tour agencies. Of particular note are the fortress of Fortezza, the archaeological museum, the historical and ethnographic museum, the Rimondi fountain and the chapel of St. Nicholas, built right in the sea. 30 km from Rethymno is the equally popular beach of Bali (do not confuse with the island of the same name in Indonesia).

How to get there

The journey will have to start at any major city Greece, since Rethymno does not have its own airport. For example, you can take a ferry from Athens to Heraklion. The ferry operates daily.

Railway communication in Greece is poorly developed due to the mountainous terrain. From different parts of Crete, comfortable air-conditioned buses run to Rethymnon. Passenger transportation handled by KTEL. Most tourists arrive in Heraklion or Chania, and then get to the bus station and choose the route to Rethymno. Travel time from both places will take just over an hour, with flights departing several times a day. The ticket price is approximately 7 euros. It is worth considering that Greek drivers tend to get under way earlier than the time indicated in the schedule.

The most comfortable way to get to Rethymnon is by taxi or a pre-booked transfer. The transfer price includes a meeting with a driver with a sign in the arrivals hall, luggage loading and delivery to the hotel door.

The historic center is the focus of buildings built in the Venetian style: with openwork window bars, cast metal door handles and typically Turkish wooden balconies hanging chaotically over the narrow streets. The main attractions of this part of the city are the majestic fortress of Fortezza, the Rimondi fountain and mosques with minarets.

Right behind the embankment, the New Town begins - a commercial area with many shops, boutiques and souvenir shops. Experienced Tourists Recommend shopping here.

As for accommodation, the largest number of hotels on the map of Rethymno is located in the waterfront area.

Like other resorts with a long history, Rethymnon boasts an interesting old part and new areas.

The old city is the focus of Venetian buildings, which combine both traditional Renaissance decorations (for example, openwork lattices) and Turkish decorative elements (balconies hanging over the streets). Despite the presence of the latter, this part of the city is very similar to Venice with its winding streets leading to temples or fountains.

However, the first thing that catches your eye while walking through the historical part of the city is not the architectural richness at all, but huge flower garlands and pots with plants. And that's not all the surprises of the old streets. Local residents are convinced that there is no limit to perfection, so they spare no time, effort and imagination to “ennoble” their city. Someone, in a creative impulse, glues the facades of houses with newspapers, someone takes a few tables and chairs outside, turning the nearby area into a cozy home cafe ...

The promenade area, which stretches along the beach, deserves special attention. It is here that the party life of the city is concentrated - there are enough bars, restaurants and nightclubs here for everyone! It also offers a magnificent view of the dilapidated fortress of Fortez, a lighthouse of the 13th century. and a harbor filled with fishing boats and pleasure yachts. This is, perhaps, exactly the area in which it is better to stay in Rethymnon.

The commercial area of Rethymnon begins right behind the embankment. Here at every step there are boutiques, souvenir shops, hotels.

There are no dangerous areas in Rethymnon - a calm, relaxed atmosphere reigns here.

In which of the districts of Rethymnon is better to live, you decide. In any case, unforgettable and inspiring emotions and impressions are guaranteed!
