On the Blue Lake we went as part of our road trip to Kazan. The route was planned in such a way as to see not only the city, but also the suburbs - Blue Lakes And island city of Sviyazhsk. Details of the route and the whole trip will be later, today I want to tell you whether it is worth spending time on a place that is popular for Kazan, but not quite known to people from other cities.
Blue Lake (12 km from Kazan along the M7 highway) is a real oasis of coolness and tranquility after the hustle and bustle.
When traveling to Kazan, plan your time to walk along the forest paths and see the lake. It is even possible to swim if you are not afraid of the water temperature of about 6°C.

The unique cascade of the Blue Lakes, as scientists and biologists call it, is called the Pearl of Tatarstan and is protected by the state.
The depth of the reservoir reaches 15 meters. This is the deepest lake in the system of karst lakes on the Kazanka River. The purest spring water enters the lake from underground, this is the reason for absolute transparency and a constant rather low temperature throughout the year.

In case of depletion of natural groundwater reserves, these lakes will disappear on their own.
But until this happens (and it won’t happen in the next decades), you can safely come and admire the natural landmark of Kazan.

The name Blue Lakes in Kazan means three reservoirs of karst origin. This complex is located on an area of about 19 square kilometers and is a natural monument.
The lakes got their name because of the salty mud, which is blue in color and is at the bottom. All year round the temperature in the reservoirs is stable, at a level of +3 to +7 degrees. Therefore, few people dare to swim in such cold water even on a hot July day.
The average depth of the lakes is about 3-4 meters, but due to the optical effect of the lens, it seems that they are very shallow. For this reason, divers come here, but there is one feature that not all newcomers know about. The silt, which is at the bottom, has a light gray color, and if you accidentally hook it, then you can forget about the transparency of the water for a long time. Divers who constantly come here adhere to a certain tradition - they lower a decorated Christmas tree to the bottom big lake which can be seen even from the shore.
Light
One of the Blue Lakes of Kazan is called Big or Light. The depth in it is from 1 to 3 meters. However, it has two:
- Big Deep with a depth of 18 meters;
- Malaya Abyss 6 meters deep.
In the Great Funnel, keys were found that are saturated with gypsum. Small Blue is much smaller than Light, and its depth is up to 4 meters. It has two drains to Kazanka, one of which is in the form of a waterfall. There are also equipped places for diving and descent.
Flowing in size is even smaller than the Small Lake, with a depth of up to 3 meters and 1 runoff into the river. It is in this reservoir that the warmest water.
History of appearance
The photo of the Blue Lakes in Kazan is, of course, impressive. After all, a cascade of reservoirs is surrounded by dense woodland and is located in the state reserve. There are many wetlands in the area. The total area of the protected area is 1910 hectares, and lakes - 0.3 hectares. The lake received the protection status in 1972, and in 1994 they were given the status of a protected area. The lakes are actually the beginning of the shallow branch of the Kazanka River.
It is believed that several hundred years ago, the soil sank in these places, and the bowls that appeared were filled with water. And so the lakes were born. By the way, the trunks of ancient trees are still visible from under the thickness of the water.
Flora and fauna
Frogs and crustaceans live in the lakes, there are a lot of algae. There are no fish today, although old-timers say that pike were found in these waters earlier. There have been many attempts to plant fish in the lakes, but the water here is too cold and salty for freshwater fish.
There are a lot of birch trees in the protected area and there are about 97 plant species, some of them are listed in this area. This is a floating mannik, water pine and others.
There are unique animals in the waters - these are the water scorpion and the milky-white planaria, the golden bee-eater. On the banks sometimes there are beavers and muskrats, snakes.
Water composition
If you decide to go on vacation to the Blue Lakes of Kazan, then it will not be superfluous to know the composition of these waters. Analyzes carried out more than once show that local waters are saturated with soluble chemical salts, they account for about 2500 milligrams per 1 liter of water. For example, in the same river Volga there are only 150 grams of them for the same amount of water.
Most of these salts are gypsum. In confirmation of this, on the leaves of plants growing on coastline, sometimes you can even notice with the naked eye a light white coating - gypsum crystals.
The water itself is slightly sticky and has absolutely no smell. And the pungent smell of hydrogen sulfide comes from the sludge. Studies of this density confirmed that the silt can be used as sulfuric mud. How hydrogen sulfide is formed has not been exactly established, but most likely it is created due to the fermentation of sulfates.
The water flow of all three lakes is about 550-600 liters per second, about 250 liters fall on Svetloye Lake.
Diving
Divers dive in the Great Blue Lake. Divers say that incredible landscapes open underwater, almost futuristic views, you can see the sky with stars through the thickness of transparent water, if you dive at night. It is at night in clear weather that the moon and stars shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow.

How to get there
The blue lake of Kazan is located near the M17 highway. You can get here by your own or public transport.
If you go on your own from the city of Kazan, then you should take the bus following route number 35 from the metro station "Tukaya Square". Having reached the stop "Solnyshko" or "Golubyatnikova", you need to transfer to bus number 40 and go to the final stop - the village of Shcherbakovo. Then go on foot, following the signs.
How to get to Blue Lake (Kazan) by car? You need to go to the M17 highway and drive off at km 808 to the village of the same name. Then move on to the bridge. The descent to the Small and Protochny is in front of the bridge, to Svetly - behind the bridge. You can go down in front of the bridge, pass near two small ponds and follow the path to the Big Lake.

The system consists of three unconnected lakes - Big Blue (below the bridge over the Kazanka on the Kazan Bypass Road of the M7 motorway),
Flowing and Small Blue (above the bridge along the course of the Kazanka).
The lakes are the oxbows of the Kazanka River, which flows in the immediate vicinity, complicated by karst basins. Karst failures appeared in this area about 200 years ago. 
The lakes do not have surface tributaries, they are fed by groundwater, flowing down channels to the Kazanka (up to 600 l/sec). In the summer, this water is significantly cools, and in the winter it warms. Kazanka, preventing ice formation downstream. The water in the lakes is characterized by almost absolute transparency and the optical effect of the lens, in which the depth visually seems to be much less than the real one.
In the hard, bitter taste like sea, mineralized water of the lakes, the content of potassium-calcium sulfite-sulphate salts is high, at their bottom there are large areas of silt salt mud of blue color, which gave the name to the lakes. The color of the water changes with the season and the weather from azure to black. In severe frosts, the water of the lakes strongly soars with local low fog.
Water and mud are used in the nearby sanatorium "Krutushka" and by the unorganized population as curative for psoriasis and other skin diseases.
First short description The Blue Lakes were given in 1829 by the Kazan scientist, rector of the Kazan State University and local historian Karl Fuchs. 
Big Blue Lake
In early sources, the former name of the Big Blue Lake is given: Svetloe.
The Big Blue Lake in its larger area has an average depth of 1-3 meters, however, there are two karst funnels - Big and Small Depths. The depth of the Great Deep is 18 meters, the Small Deep is 6 meters. At the bottom of the Great Deep in the northwestern rounded part of the lake, springs saturated with gypsum (up to 250 l / s) beat. The water temperature in the deep rounded part of the lake varies little from season to season and ranges from 5-7 degrees Celsius in summer to 3-4 degrees in winter. From the deep rounded part, the lake zigzags along Kazanka and ends with a runoff into it through two small waterfalls.
Bridges are equipped near the deep rounded part of the lake; this is a favorite place for year-round swimming of walruses and year-round diving in the Great Abyss for Kazan and visiting divers from several federations and unorganized ones. Their almost weekly trainings and informal meetings are held here, in particular, the celebration of the New Year with the traditional dive into the abyss of the decorated New Year tree and drinking champagne under water.
Big Blue Lake 
Blue Lake is also a great place for night dives. In the light of lanterns, the sources are viewed to a great depth, it is clear that the outlets of the springs are connected to each other at a considerable depth under the bottom of the lake. An absolutely futuristic picture of the starry sky through a completely transparent lens of water. The stars and the moon shine with all the colors of the rainbow.
Big Blue Lake is more difficult to access than Small Lake, and, as a result, is less known to Kazanians, many of whom identify with Blue Lake (this is how, in the singular, the informal name of the lake system is used), first of all, Small Blue Lake. A dirt road from the depth of the village of Shcherbakovo leads to the rounded part of the Big Lake, and an asphalt road from the village of Kadyshevo leads to the waterfall. At the waterfall part of the lake there is a small settlement-farm and earlier there was a rest house "Blue Lake".

The lake and the surrounding area are equipped for recreation and year-round winter swimming - bridges and changing cabins are equipped. In addition to the equipped main Small Lake, downstream of the Kazanka there is another one - Protochnoe, much smaller in size, having a separate drain and shallower depth. The water temperature in the summer in the Small Lake is almost the same as in the Big Blue, in the Protochny - a little higher.
From the bridge over the Kazanka bypass road of the M7 highway after the village of Shcherbakovo there is an asphalted passage through the Flowing Lake in the direction of the Small Lake, ending with a parking lot a few tens of meters from it. A hiking trail leads to the lake. On the other hand, there is an unpaved exit from the sanatorium "Krutushka" and a children's health camp"Baitik" and a glade, which hosts part of the events of the annual international folk song festival "Krutushka".
Small Goluboe is connected to the Big Goluboe Lake by a pedestrian and cycling unpaved path passing under the M7 bridge along Kazanka.
Blue Lakes 
For a long time, the energy of the springs filling the lake was used by a stone mill, later by a small hydroelectric power station (until the 1950s). In 1928, Kazanka washed away the jumper that separated the river from the lake and the lake turned out to be lowered. After the restoration of the cofferdam and bank protection works, the lake was restored.
Flora and fauna
Birch, aspen and pine grow in the forests on the territory of the reserve; more than 97 species of aquatic, coastal and terrestrial plants grow near the lakes - sharp and coastal sedge, meadow bluegrass, lake reed, narrow-leaved and broad-leaved cattail, floating manna, hard-leaved ranunculus, water pine and others.
Of the animals listed in the Red Book of Tatarstan, in the reserve there are milky-white planaria and water scorpion (in the water of lakes), mourning, spotted eagle, golden bee-eater. Due to the low temperature and high salt content, fish are not found in the water of the lakes. On the shores of the lakes there are frogs, snakes, a small white water mouse (kotura), muskrats and beavers.
