The friendlier and more relaxed Purple Pig Stars on the way up Chora offers cozy bungalows and has its own club and pool bar. Nearby is the attractive and luxurious Dionysos Hotel. On the road at the far end of the beach, the French-run hotel los Plage (June-September) offers nice, modern rooms, excellent French cuisine in the terrace restaurant. From Yialos there are boats to Manganari, on the south coast (daily, departure at about 10 o'clock, return in the afternoon; 12 € round trip) - there is a beach and a hotel, but you can also take a scooter.
You can also get to Manganari by private buses provided by travel agencies (€6 round trip): they leave Yialos at about 11 o'clock, call in Chora and Mylopotamos and return in the late afternoon, however, the roads are such that the way by sea is preferable. Previously, nudism reigned on the beach, now the authorities are trying to stop it, but not too successful. A more pleasant place is Ayia Teodoti, on east coast. An asphalt road leads there through the entire island and walks tour bus(daily; 3 € return).
A couple of kilometers from Ayia Teodoti to the south is Paleokastro, the ruins of a Venetian castle and the remains of a marble-clad city and a Byzantine church. If - which is unlikely - there are too many people on the beach (mostly nudist), try to get to Psati, 14 kilometers to the southeast, but you will need your own transport. This resort was chosen by wealthy Athenians and therefore the local average taverns are overpriced, although the moderately priced fish tavern Alonistra is a pleasant exception.
Another decent beach - Kalamos - you will get by taking the bus to Manganari and getting off at the turn to Kalamos, after which you will have to walk 4 kilometers. The so-called "Tomb of Homer" is best reached by scooter on a safe dirt road (first along the highway to Ayia Teodoti, then turn left after 4.5 kilometers from Chora). The ancient town has long crumbled from the cliff, but the ruins of the entrance to the mausoleum and some burials have survived, including the one where, according to legend, Homer is buried, although in fact all these ruins are by no means older than the Byzantine era.
