Detailed map of Koh Phangan. Koh Phangan island in thailand

Koh Phangan or, in the local dialect, Koh Phangan is located in the Gulf of Thailand, 56 km from the mainland of Thailand and 15 km from Koh Samui.

You are unlikely to be able to buy a package tour here, and there is an opinion about this place that a lot of not quite ordinary people live here - vegetarians who practice refusing alcohol, sex, communication, etc. In fact, such people live everywhere, and in your city, although it is far from Koh Phangan, such people live too.

In fact, there are individuals of informal appearance on Koh Phangan, but not at all in such numbers as on beaches of Goa. The version that Koh Phangan is Thai Goa, which is often written on websites, is far from the truth.

Only remotely the atmosphere here resembles Goan

Yes, Koh Phangan has become the venue for the largest open air of the entire South-East Asia- here

hosts the monthly Full Moon Party. It happens on a full moon. Several thousand people come.

But on other days there are no freaks and meditators on the beaches, no people playing the pipe, no snakes in a basket, guys with dirty hair and shabby clothes, drugged, beggars, etc.

Koh Phangan lives an unobtrusive but rhythmic life. Even traders on most beaches are absent and do not interfere with the sun to shine on vacationers.

Fuul moon party

First, the most famous! As mentioned above, this party happens every month on a full moon night at Haad Rin Beach. On this beach, life begins to boil 3-4 days before the party. The hype ends 2-3 days after the Fuul Moon party. If you do not aspire to this event, then it is better not to come to Haad Rin on such days.

During this lunar week, there will be crowds, noise, dirt, and 5 times higher prices for accommodation on Haad Rin. On other beaches of Koh Phangan, this event is not reflected in any way.

On Haad Rin itself, 3 days after the party, it’s clean, hotel prices are returning to their usual level and the entire party audience has already left.

Who lives in Koh Phangan

The local population, as it turned out, are not Thais, but Burmese. There are Thais, of course, too, but there are much fewer of them. So it's worth shining your knowledge of Thai on Koh Phangan.

Koh Phangan beaches

The beaches on Koh Phangan are very beautiful, memorable and different. Most with crystal clear water. But this is external. When entering the water on many beaches, you find a rocky bottom, which makes swimming uncomfortable or not possible at all.

Haad Rin

Haad Rin is actually a district in the south of the island, which occupies a small ledge of land. There are two beaches here: Haad Rin Nok and Haad Rin Nai. The first one is located in the eastern part, so sunrises are met here. The second is in the west of the peninsula, and here they look at sunsets.

Haad Rin Nok- a large beach, wide, sandy. This is where the Full Mo night party takes place

on party. Lovers of nightclubs, bars and dancing until the morning prefer to settle in the hotels of this beach.

Another thing Haad Rin Nai- The beach is very small. The place is quiet and secluded, but you can always walk to Haad Rin Nok and plunge into the fun.

There are many shops, cafes, guesthouses near both beaches.

Ban Kai

If you move along the coast from Haad Rin to the northwest, next you will meet Ban Kai beach. The beach is quite wide, and between the coconut plantations, numerous hotels and bungalows are conveniently located. There are also many restaurants, bars, shops, but not as noisy and crowded as on Haad Rin.

The sand is a little rough, and the coast becomes narrow in some places, especially in the east near a small rocky promontory.

Sea disturbances are very rare, so swimming is good, despite the fact that it is very shallow here. There is a coral reef 400 m from the beach, but in the season from April to November, snorkeling is not always possible here (low water).

Ban Tai

This beach is also suitable for nightlife. Once a month, the Black Moon Culture party takes place here. It is full of cheap housing, good infrastructure.

This is one of the longest beaches on Koh Phangan, its length is about 2 km. The sand is coarse, with stones in the surf, broken shells, a rocky bottom, shallow water, and in some places the coast is reinforced from erosion by stone fences.

The entrance to the water has a rather large slope, which nevertheless becomes very gentle after three meters. As a result, you will have to go from 50 to 200 meters to a normal depth for an adult.

Bang Charu

If you want to live closer to the administrative center of the island, then it is better to settle here. The beach is pretty clean. The coast is wide, there is a lot of sand.

Thongsala

The beach in Thongsala is not for swimming and sunbathing. There is a parking lot for boats of local residents and a port, so the sea is dirty. But housing here is naturally cheaper than in Haad Rin and on nearby beaches.

In general, Thongsala is the administrative center and main port of Koh Phangan.

Sritanau

Moving further north we get to the Sritanau beach. There are few people here and it's clean. Nearby is Lake Laem Son - a favorite vacation spot for local and visiting Thais.

Khaad Chao Pao

There are more vacationers here than on Sritanau, but much less than in Haad Rin. Chao Pao is a small bay. The low tides are not so strong here and you can swim in any season, although the depth near the coast is shallow.

You can see the reef and rocks, you can probably try to snorkel there.

Haad Yao

A popular beach in the northwest of Koh Phangan. The beach is really beautiful, its images can often be seen on the brochures of Koh Phangan. Lots of greenery, lots of clean and white sand. Water at low tide is not very much, but enough to swim.

There is everything you need for a measured beach holiday. Minus - far from Thongsala and even more so from Haad Rin (opposite side of the island).

Haad Salad

Also a popular beach. Located in the bay of the same name. From here it is very close to Mae Haad beach and its business card- Mae Islands. There is a coral reef in the sea near Haad Salad beach. Because of this, on the one hand, Haad Salad is suitable for snorkeling - you can rent a mask and fins and admire the corals.

On the other hand, sometimes it is not too comfortable to swim. The entrance to the water is gentle, the depth is small, and if you move further into the sea, you can injure your feet on the fragments of coral.

To go explore undersea world, you can contact one of the dive centers, of which there are many on Haad Salad. The average cost is 1000 baht. This amount includes equipment, a little instruction (especially useful for beginners) and a boat trip for a distance sufficient for swimming.

Mae Haad

Mae Haad beach is located in the very northern point west coast of Koh Phangan and is considered one of the most beautiful and best beaches of the island. The beach is very picturesque, wide, a lot of greenery, it has very clean sand and the sea. In addition, here the best place for snorkeling in Koh Phangan.

Crowded during the day, in the evening the beach is empty, only those who live in local hotels remain.

They also say that you can walk along the seabed on foot and reach the neighboring island. Small island Koh Mae is located very close to Koh Phangan. The sea near the northern coast is shallow, because of this, during low tides, the sandy bottom is exposed and a “road” is formed leading to Koh Mae.

Chaloklum

This is the bay in which the port is located and the fishing village adjoins. Therefore, the sea and the beach here are dirtier than in other areas. Chaloklum Beach is approximately 2.5 km long

In the center is a fishing village. Many street and beach restaurants in the bay serve fish and seafood dishes caught by local fishermen.

Housing prices are more affordable here. The place is in demand mainly among surfers: in this area the waves are higher.

bottle beach

A small white sand beach is located next to Chaloklum. This beach is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful beach not only on Koh Phangan, but throughout Thailand. At the same time, there is no paved road to this beach yet.

People usually come here for one day from neighboring areas - just to swim in the clear sea and lie in the shade of palm trees.

A big plus of Bottle Beach is that you can swim on it in any season, there are no pronounced ebbs and flows and the sea is always deep, unlike many other beaches of Koh Phangan.

Thong Nai Pan Noi

The beach is located in the northeast of the island. It's deeper here than west coast Koh Phangan. There are few hotels and shops, as well as vacationers. To get here, you need to drive across the entire island, and off-road, for which a motorcycle is more suitable than a car. Another option is by boat from Chacloklum.

Thong Nai Pan Yai

The beach is close to Thong Nai Pan Noi when driving to the northeast. It cannot be called crowded and popular, because getting here, again, is not easy - there is no full-fledged road. If you go from Thongsala, you will have to cross the entire island. But the nature here is beautiful. The sea is shallow, calm and clean, suitable for families with children.

Haad Sadet

The beach is located in the east of Koh Phangan. Here is a good depth, but there are waves. This place is suitable for surfing. If you want to ride the waves, keep in mind that there are no surf schools or equipment rentals on the beach, you will have to bring it with you from another point on the island.

Haad Yuan

So we return to Haad Rin. The last in the review will be Haad Yuan beach in the southeast of the island. Next up is Haad Rin. The beach is quiet and calm, there are not many places to stay, so there are few people. Most often people come here for one day just to relax and swim in the clean and calm sea.

The greenest island in Thailand

It is considered so. Even the kings of Thailand are among the fans of Koh Phangan. Here, even ordinary bushes, palm trees and grass have such a special green color.

What tourists come to Koh Phangan

Immediately catches the eye great amount European youth. And Russian tourists, on the contrary, are few. They write that for the most part, Russians on Koh Phangan simply live or fly in for the winter with their children.

And returning to the youth, it is clear that our average graduate does not have the opportunity to save enough money and rush to travel around Asia for a couple of months. So European youth completely occupied Phangan.

Observation decks with bars

Koh Phangan is full of bars with viewing platforms. Well thought out. The views from the observation decks are different because they are located in different parts of the island.

Roads on Koh Phangan

A very unexpected fact was the quality of asphalt roads on Koh Phangan. It is very high. But the terrain is mountainous, the roads are winding and narrow in places. During the rainy season, it often happens that the mountain descends onto the roadway.

Mountainous terrain and winding roads do not allow for high speeds. Those who want to drive, however, can be seen. They are distinguished by the presence of bandages and plaster. You should not experience the steepness of the turns on Koh Phangan. Here, even experienced drivers can not cope with the management. Be careful and better move between beaches on four wheels, i.e. by taxi!

Hotels on the beaches

There are many good hotels on Koh Phangan, while the price is very low. For the amount of 1000 baht per day, you can easily find yourself a quite decent hotel on the first coastline. The hotels are mostly clean and new, lots of air conditioned rooms.

Shops, markets, fruits on Koh Phangan

7-Eleven stores are not everywhere. Tested on the following beaches: Had Rin, Thong Nai Pan Yai, Chaloklam, Had Yao, Srithanu. Also available in Thongsala. Prices are about 10% higher than the mainland ones.

Also in Thongsala near the pier there are medium-sized supermarkets: Tesco Lotus, Big C and Makro.

There are two main markets on the island. Both are again in the Thongsala area.

Favored by Russian tourists, macarons are very rare.

She is also a feature of vacation on the islands - with fruit tension. Fruit tents, with a poor choice, and not on all beaches. So it’s not easy for lovers of non-meat food in Phangan.

Phangan. Attractions

Koh Phangan is not full of attractions. Several temples and neighboring islands.

Wat Pho Temple

The temple is located near Ban Tai beach, between Haad Rin and Thongsala. Tourists often come here, but first of all, not for the views of Thai architecture, silence and tranquility of this place.

The main goal is to visit the herbal sauna at the temple. And besides these spa treatments, here you can get a session of Thai massage.

Wat Chakloklum

Obviously, Wat Chakloklum is located near the fishing village of the same name, which was discussed above. Therefore, the temple is more popular among locals. This, in my opinion, is what makes it particularly interesting. If you happen to be in the Chacloklum area, take a look here, admire the white and gold facade and beautiful interior.

ang thong

Between the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan and mainland Thailand is an archipelago. This is a national park, an excursion there is very popular from Koh Samui, but you can also swim from Koh Phangan. The archipelago consists of 42 two tiny islands with a total area of only 18 sq. km. The uniqueness and beauty of this place is in its landscape: rocks, caves, rich flora.

Season on Koh Phangan

Compared to other regions and districts of Southern Thailand, Koh Phangan does not have distinct wet and dry seasons. There are two periods when the amount of precipitation increases - from May to July and from October to December.

Ko Phangan in autumn and winter: many tourists, as a result - inflated prices for hotels. The weather is not the best, waves, the sea throws garbage and algae on the sand, low tides at night. But high season...

Ko Phangan in spring and summer: few tourists, 50-70% discounts in hotels, sunny weather, little or no waves, clear water, clean beaches, low tides during the day. Low season…

The high season on Koh Phangan lasts from November to February. It is called high not because during these months there is clear sunny weather and good sea. In winter, a large influx of tourists who fly to bask on the Thai islands. Peak season - December, New Year.

The rainiest months are October and November. And in winter on Koh Phangan, the weather is rather tolerable, a lot sunny days, but there are also many rainy, cloudy days. Probably, if you choose the winter months, then it is better to go in February-March. But on the other hand, in winter, the tide season on Koh Phangan.

How to get there

The area of Koh Phangan is 125 sq. km. There was no place for an airport on such a small piece of land.

The nearest airport to the island is on Koh Samui. Two major Thai airlines, Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways, operate regular flights here from Bangkok.

Getting to Koh Phangan is not a problem from the mainland either. In any case, you need to sail to the island by ferry. By the way, it departs from the same Donsak pier, from which ferries go to Koh Samui.

From the cities of Thailand for a trip, you can use private tourist or government buses. A ticket for the tourist bus can be bought at any agency.

You can come to the island with your bike and even by car, then by ferry anyway.

Opinion about Koh Phangan

A beach holiday on Koh Phangan as a whole should be highly appreciated. Yes, many beaches are too small, but the water is clear, beautiful blue or greenish color of the sea, few waves, white sand, beautiful views and solitude without a huge number of tourists. Lots of beaches to choose from.

Thailand ... A country that is generous with the sun, warmth and hospitality. The country of eternal summer and eternal smiles. They say that in Thailand it is impossible to frown and walk in a bad mood. Nature itself acts as a healer and heals from blues and depression, melancholy and despondency. Among the many paradises lost in this small country, Koh Phangan occupies not the last place. Not far from Thong Sala, the main port of the island, is Ban Tai Beach. But it is precisely because of it and the pronounced low tides from May to November that it is problematic to swim here.

But in the port itself there are small beaches at the hotels. However, the proximity of the port and the passing parties Half Moon Festival (Middle Moon), Shiva Moon Party (Shiva) to stay here does not attract tourists who come to relax from the hustle and bustle.

The choice of a beach on Koh Phangan is a very important issue, because due to low tides, some areas are unsuitable for swimming for half a year.

Koh Phangan (aka Koh Phangan, aka Koh Phangan) is my favorite island in Thailand. Yes, what is there in Thailand - on the whole planet. I was there 8 times in different years, traveled up and down, rented accommodation on different beaches, so I have some idea about the subject.

The content of the article:

When to visit Koh Phangan?

The tourist season on Koh Phangan is from December to March and from August to September. It is very hot here from April-May, and in October-November the rainy season is on Koh Phangan.

Why go to Koh Phangan?

They say that Koh Phangan is the island of Karma, where what was deep inside is revealed. It is compared in atmosphere with the Indian Goa, but this is only one side of the island.

On Koh Phangan, freaks in acid t-shirts, weed smokers with dreadlocks and quiet tattooed alcoholics coexist peacefully with yogis, pranoeds and people who do not go to extremes and just came to Koh Phangan on vacation / for wintering / for reconnaissance.

My Koh Phangan is a ride on a scooter, along a rough road to secret beaches. It's a fresh breeze in your face and cold in the evenings. This is the unhealthy fried potato from a bowl of butter in the market. And Had Salad. And madly in love. And Hadrin at night. And a hammock with mosquitoes. And Malibu. And in love again ... But all this is my island. You will have it.

Rental housing on Koh Phangan

Hotels and bungalows in advance or on site?

Koh Phangan is the best place in advance book accommodation if you are coming for a short stay ( up to 1 month) and know exactly the dates of the trip.

Especially if the trip falls on December-March or August-September.

Housing on Koh Phangan is very specific. The cheapest bungalows ( 10-20$ ), which stand near the beaches, are usually very simple and dark, and sometimes without hot water. Not everyone wants to spend their holidays in them.

Inexpensive good hotels (25-40$ ) are often occupied during the season, and rooms in expensive hotels(from 80$ ) it makes no sense to shoot on the spot, because on booking sites the prices are the same or lower.

If you are traveling during the Full Moon Party, then all the more so book in advance, because everything budget options always busy.

I once had to sleep in a hammock on a friend's veranda for three nights, because the only available accommodation on the island was $200 hotels. The prices of the most basic bungalows doubled or tripled, and even those closets that had skyrocketed in price were quickly booked by someone else while I turned up my nose.

On ordinary days and in the low season, you can find accommodation on the spot (you need to ride a scooter and look, and know exactly where to look), but there is not much point in this.

I had an experience when, while on Koh Phangan, I looked for accommodation on the spot, asked prices at the hotel reception or in a bungalow, and it turned out that the price for these same hotels on the Internet was lower than when paying on the spot. As a result, I still booked at agoda, standing at the reception.

On which sites to book accommodation?

Who to book with is your personal choice. If I need a hotel or condo in Asia, I use the roomguru search engine. It allows you to compare prices for the same hotel in all popular booking systems (agoda, booking, ozon, etc.) and shows where it is cheaper.

Then I book on the Agoda website (because sometimes it’s cheaper by 5-10%) or Booking (because you can book without prepayment). Listed on roomguru final price per room including all taxes and surcharges.

Below are some examples of Shiralea Resort prices found through roomguru. We see that the price for the same room when booking it on booking is 22$ , on agoda - 25$ , plus booking provides free cancellation and deferred payment (you can book without paying). Therefore, this hotel is more profitable to book on booking.com.

BUT! Agoda has three big disadvantages:

  • Prepayment. You always need to pay immediately or two weeks before settling. On booking, some hotels can be booked without payment
  • taxes. Service Fees are not included in Agoda hotel search results for Thailand hotels. 10% and hotel tax 7% . The final amount payable can be found out only after pressing the "Book" button. But even taking into account the tax, the amount often comes out more profitable than on booking.com. Necessary check.
  • Cancellation. While the booking conditions of most hotels provide for free cancellation, Agoda often states that the booking amount is non-refundable. If trip in question, it is better to overpay a few dollars and book on Booking.
If you go to booking on Agada, the price will increase to $165 (taxes 10+7%)

House on Koh Phangan for a month or more

If you are going to winter for several months, then at home for long term must be found locally. Come, take a bike to Thongsala ( main city Koh Phangan) and go on a trip around the island in search of a cozy nest.

Where do winterers live? If you need to be quiet and inexpensive, this is most likely the central part of the island in palm groves (not on the beach), as well as the west or northwest: Sritanu, Vung Tau, Had Yao.

In the north - in the area of \u200b\u200bthe fishing village Chaloklam. In the southwest in the Thongsala area, if not found, then go towards Ban Tai (many cheap bungalows). The beaches there are very bad, so if you need a beach near your house, then it is better not to look at the Ban Tai and Thongsala areas.

There are many houses on Koh Phangan, but often they are booked in advance by people who go to spend the winter on the island all the time. If you are traveling during the high season (November-February), then good inexpensive houses will be 80 percent occupied.

Most of the houses are not on the beach, but in the central part of the island away from the beaches. You need to drive on internal roads and ask the Thais. The average price for renting a house on Koh Phangan is 9-12,000 baht ( 250-350$ ) for six months to a year, and 12-16,000 baht ( 330-450$ ) for one month. Prices may increase during peak season.

You can also look for a house for a short time (up to a month), but, firstly, during the season, Thais do not want to rent houses for less than a month, and if they do, they ask for the same price as for daily rent.

How to get to Koh Phangan and public transport

The only way to get to Koh Phangan is by ferry. There is no airport on the island. If you are traveling from Bangkok or Phuket, you can buy a bus + ferry package, if from Koh Samui, then by ferry or boat.

You can find out prices and buy tickets to Koh Phangan from other cities in Thailand on the spot (better in advance, especially if you are traveling on the days of the Full Moon Party).

If you do not want to stand in line (there is always a queue for ferry tickets for some reason), you can check prices online and book tickets in advance using the Asian local local transport search engine. There, including tickets from Bangkok (bus + ferry) and other cities are sold. Find Koh Phangan tickets ↓↓↓

Public transport on Koh Phangan is presented in the form of a taxi - songteo. For a trip they take from 50 to 300 baht, depending on the distance. For more information about transport on Phangan, I recommend reading my article about - there I write where to rent a bike or car, how much it costs, what to do if you fell off a motorbike.

Where there are no low tides on Koh Phangan?

Koh Phangan means "island of sandbars" in Thai. The island has very pronounced ebbs and flows. They are especially noticeable with May to October, but even in winter the sea goes for long distances.

Strong low tides are observed on most of Koh Phangan's beaches in the middle of the month during full moon. On such days, the water can go for 100 meters, and sometimes for all 300, completely exposing the bottom. Low tides are mostly in the afternoon, so you can swim on most beaches before lunch. The tides are especially strong in the south and west of Koh Phangan, but the northern beaches also suffer from a lack of water.

Koh Phangan beaches where you can always swim:

South: Haad Rin (Ful moon party beach) - there are low tides, but you can always swim and Had Leela (neighboring) - at low tide, the water is knee-deep

Northwest: Sri Thanu, Khaad Yao, Had Salad - you can swim at low tides (water knee-deep)

North: Mae Had and Ko Ma, Malibu - low tides since March, not very annoying in winter

Northeast: Thong Nai Pan Yai, Thong Nai Pan Noi, Bottle Beach

East and southeast: all beaches are suitable for swimming at any time of the year, there are waves in winter

Which Koh Phangan beach to choose?

The choice of beach depends on your interests and needs, as well as on whether you can ride a bike. In general, Koh Phangan is a youth island where people come independent travelers. Each beach is good in its own way and each has its drawbacks.

If you drive a bike, it doesn't really matter where you live. The island is relatively small, so almost any beach from anywhere can be reached by bike in 20-50 minutes. If you you don't know how to drive a bike, then the choice of the beach should be approached more responsibly.

Youth party- this haad rin(many foreigners). Young people often live in Thong Sala. The beach there is so-so, but there is cheap food and shops. Night life- south of Haad Rin and Ban Tai, evening life - bar Amsterdam

Family holidays with children- Sri Thanu, Haad Salad, Had Yao, Mae Had, Ao Thong Nai Pan Yai (in the northeast), Haad Leela - there are no waves on all these beaches.

View of the neighboring island of Ko Ma from the observation deck over Mae Had beach

Infrastructure. The main market and supermarkets are located in the city area Thong Sala and partially Baan Tai. If you need cheap food, then it is better to buy it in Thong Sala in the market or in Tesco and Big C supermarkets. Prices in cafes in Thong Sala are also lower than on other beaches.

The infrastructure is well developed in the south on the beach Haad Rin and on the beaches Thong Nai Pan in the north-east. There are also many cafes, shops and fruit stands.

On other beaches there are mini-markets, maybe one shop and a couple of fruit stalls. You will mainly have to eat in cafes and restaurants at inflated prices or go to the Thongsala supermarket to buy.

Map of the beaches of Koh Phangan

Click on the name, a description of the beach with a photo will open:

1. Thong Sala - the largest city

Thong Sala is the main and most Big City islands of Koh Phangan. There is also a pier where ferries arrive from the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Tao and from Surat Thani. This is the very first city that most people see on Koh Phangan.

pros— infrastructure, a lot of young people. Minus- Bad beaches.

Infrastructure

Exchangers and ATMs are concentrated on the main street, which begins immediately after the pier. It is now more profitable to travel to Thailand with dollars. It is better not to take rubles. Cards are accepted only in expensive cafes and hotels, in shops only cash. For withdrawing money from a card at an ATM, a fee of 150-180 baht is charged

Transport. There are about 15 car and motorbike rentals in Thongsala. The cheapest way to rent a vehicle is on the main street.

Lots of cafes with Thai and international cuisine. Prices for food in cafes are also higher by 20%, and sometimes by 40%, than on Koh Samui and in general in Thailand

Buying clothes. In Thong Sala you can buy clothes and souvenirs. If you plan to buy T-shirts for the Full Moon Party on the day of the party, then the prices for them are the same everywhere on the island (two to three times higher than on ordinary days).

If Full Moon Party is still far away, then it is more profitable to buy clothes in Thongsala. Unless, of course, you have the opportunity to shop in Bangkok, where things are even cheaper.

■ Koh Phangan Hospital (Koh Phangan Hospital) is located 4 km from the center of Thongsala.

■ Bangkok Hospital Samui Clinic (Koh Phangan) is 3 km from Thongsala Pier. For insured events, insurance companies are usually sent here. You can read . The main thing is not to take insurance that has GVA assistance

■ Evening market with Thai food. Located on the main street of Thong Sala. Opens at 12 noon. Most merchants come in the evening - around 5 o'clock. At the market you can buy grilled fish (70 baht), salads (50-60 baht), necks, spring rolls, chicken, donuts, fruits and Thai dishes. The market is open until 10 pm, some traders stay even later. If you want to find a Russian-speaking company for your vacation or meet someone who has been living on Koh Phangan for a long time, come to the market in the evening.

Food market. On the main street there is a market where vegetables and fruits are sold. There are shops of local residents where a minimum set of products is sold. Prices are higher than on Koh Samui.

2 supermarkets. Big C supermarket on the road from Thong Sala towards Ban Tai and Tesco Lotus in Thongsala. The choice of products there is not as large as in Tesco, but still better than nothing.

■ Except in Thongsala, there are no other large shops on Koh Phangan. There are 7/11 shops on every beach, but even on 7/11 on Koh Phangan, prices are higher than in other chain stores around the country. At 7/11 you can buy cookies, coffee, drinks, sandwiches, water, ice cream, alcohol, tobacco and hygiene products. In some places there are small stalls with fruit, but still it is better to buy fruits in Thong Sala on the street market or in supermarkets - they are cheaper there.

Contingent.

There are a lot of young people on the streets and on the beach in Thongsala, especially foreigners. The secret is that Thong Sala has the cheapest housing and infrastructure, and you can ride a bike on good beaches.

Beach in Thong Sala.

The beach is so-so. The tides are pronounced there, the sea is dirty. Not the best place for swimming, but there is a beach, and this is already a big plus. On the beach of Thong Sala there is a branch of the largest kitesurfing school in Thailand, Kiteboarding Asia.

Despite the fact that Thong Sala is not very nice beach, when compared with other Koh Phangan beaches, bungalows and hotels in the main city area are rarely empty. Bungalows stretch south from the pier along the coast.

Thongsala beach and the beach is not particularly called

Southern beaches of Koh Phangan

2 Baan Tai

If you move south from Thong Sala along the coast, the Baan Tai zone immediately begins (not to be confused with the paradise beaches of Ban Tai on Koh Samui). On Koh Phangan, Ban Tai is disgusting beaches. Some palm trees, branches, rubbish lie on the shore. Strong low tides, when the sea goes 200-300 meters. The coast is shallow.

This is a zone of inexpensive bungalows and hostels. The main guests are the guys who came to the Full Moon Party and did not find housing on Haad Rin ( south beach where the party is taking place). So that people don’t get bored too much, a week before the Full Moon Party, Ban Tai holds the Full Moon Festival and Shiva Moon Party

Bungalows in Ban Tai are very cheap (250-300 baht each), but there are more expensive housing. I would not choose these beaches for a holiday on Koh Phangan, although there are several quite decent hotels and resorts with a green area on Bantai.

3 Baan Kai beach

It starts right behind the Ban Tai beaches. The views here are more pleasant, the hills.

I would not live there, but for a relaxing holiday for a couple of weeks, the beach is not bad if you are looking for solitude and silence. Huge boulders, fruit trees, palm trees, tropical greenery. There is a coral reef 200 meters from the beach.

The main problem of these beaches, as well as neighboring Ban Tai, is low tides. From April to September-October, the sea is very shallow, and sometimes it does not exist at all. You don't buy.

After observation deck above Baan Kai beach, the road leading to Had Rin begins to wind. Out of habit, it can be scary to ride on it.

4** Haad Rin Beach

Full Moon Party Beach. Located on the "tail" in the southeast of Koh Phangan. There is a sunrise beach - Haad Rin Nok and a sunset beach - Haad Rin Nai, between them there is a settlement where travelers usually stop.

Haad Rin Nai is a sunset beach located on the other side of Haad Rin village. There is a pier where boats arrive from Koh Samui during the Full Moon Party.

Haad Rin Nok (Dawn Beach) hosts the famous Full Moon Party every month. I wrote more about this party and how to get to Haad Rin in a post:

Infrastructure

Since Haad Rin is the busiest and most rave of Koh Phangan's beaches, the infrastructure is well developed on it. There are a few 7/11 shops but the prices are higher than the shops in Thongsala. Clothes and souvenirs are sold on the streets. Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants.

Who will suit?

If your goal is hang out, drink, walk and have fun, then feel free to rent a house on Had Rin

Despite the fact that there is a party going on at Haad Rin Nok and the beach is considered not very clean, I really like it there because of the waves and the turquoise color of the water. Music is playing on the shore, a lot of young people.

If you, while in Thailand, meet only compatriots (as in, where almost everyone speaks Russian), and you miss talking in English, you can fill the gap on Haad Rin - Europeans just like to hang out there. If you want peace and quiet, you can always escape from the noise to the rocks or to the nearby Had Leela beach.

Haad Rin Beach

During the party, thousands of people come to Haad Rin for several days, and the rest of the time this Koh Phangan beach is quite deserted and calm.

If the goal is just relax in silence, then you can go to Haad Rin, but not on the days of the Full Moon Party. The nature around the beach is very beautiful, you can go on foot to other calmer and even wild beaches.

How to get there? The road to Haad Rin is steep mountains with sharp turns, so if you are not confident in your bike riding skills, it is better to take a taxi to Haad Rin ( 100 baht from Thongsala to songteo). If with a bike on “you”, then you can rent a bike in Thongsala and then go on a bike, only very carefully. On the eve of the party there are posts on the roads. The police check people for alcohol.

There are a lot of people on Had Rin before the party

Bungalows and hotels at Full Moon Beach

There are a number of bungalows, prices for which start from 400 baht, and on the days of the party increase to 800-900 baht. There are also more expensive resorts ($100-200 per night). You can live in a bungalow right on the beach. Please note that in addition to full moon parties, there are also Half Moon parties and other parties on Koh Phangan, so when you live on Haad Rin Beach, you will hear music day and night.

I usually rented accommodation closer to the Had Rin Nai beach (speed boats arrive there from Koh Samui). There huge complex simple bungalows for 400-800 baht per day (on booking, these bungalows can be rented for $ 8-15 per day). The advantage is that the music from the party is not heard, you can sleep peacefully, but at the same time, the fun center is 5 minutes on foot.

Popular hotels in Had Rin:

5* Haad Leela Beach

Had Leela- the southernmost beach of Koh Phangan. He is one of the most romantic and calm. Located just behind Haad Rin Nai. You can get to Haad Leel from Haad Rin on foot in 5 minutes.

The length of the beach is 500 meters. On both sides of the beach there are wooden bridges - you can walk along them, sit in the gazebo. There are several viewing platforms and a Buddhist temple. There are shops and cafes in Had Rin. It takes literally 7 minutes to go there from Had Leela.

The sea is shallow, at high tide the water comes very close and floods the trees. The tides are pronounced. At low tide, water remains, but you can't swim. You can only lie in the water. It will be convenient for children to learn to swim. Landscapes are idyllic. White sand, blue water, palm trees hanging over the water. On the shore in some places there are sun loungers and hammocks for hotel guests.

You can come to Haad Leela the next morning after the Full Moon Party, when it is highly undesirable to swim on Haad Rin because of the garbage left after the party. If you are looking for a mix between relaxing holiday and parties, you can rent accommodation on Leela Beach and go to have fun in the evenings on Had Rin. In summer, it is better to choose another beach for relaxation or live on this one and go swimming on Haad Rin - there is always water there.

Koh Phangan hotels, Lila beach

Haad Leela has both very cheap bungalows and a couple of excellent resorts. For example, these:

I chose hotels because of the availability of the Internet in them. Other housing on Koh Phangan in my price range was occupied at the time. It takes about 10 minutes to get to normal beaches by bike, so if you know how to drive a bike, you can look at accommodation in the Woktum and Hin Kong area.

8 Sri Thanu

Sri Thanu (Baan Sri Thanu, Srithanu, Stirana) is a fishing village with developed infrastructure. Families with children like to relax on this beach; in the Sritanu area, those who come to Phangan for a long time often live.

In Srithanu begins the region of good beaches of Koh Phangan. This beach is wide, clean, with white sand. There are sun loungers with umbrellas, hammocks hang. There are no waves. During low tide, the sea moves only 3-4 meters from the shore, so you can swim even at low tide.

The infrastructure is well developed. There are cafes, including those with traditional Thai cuisine, macaroons, an Indian restaurant, an entertainment lagoon (you can jump into the lake from a mattress), yoga centers and schools. Starting this year, Sunset parties are also held in Srithana, like in Arambol, only on a smaller scale. Jugglers, yogis and just those who just want to say goodbye to the sun gather on the beach.

Bungalow in Srithana:

11* Haad Salad

Haad Salat, aka Had Salat. It used to be one of my favorite beaches in the northwest of Koh Phangan, but now it has become too touristy and crowded.

There is some infrastructure there. There are several cafes (including a cafe with normal Thai cuisine), massage parlors, several shops with a meager selection of food and clothing. Wooden bungalows on the beach, hotels.

This beach is more suitable for romantic getaway or holidays with children. There are no waves, the depth is insignificant, there is the possibility of snorkeling, you can swim to the reef, only there is no one especially under the water. The downside is the low tides, but even during low tide you can move away from the shore to lie in the water or swim.

When I first visited Haad Salad a few years ago, there were almost no people there. Now this beach enjoys unprecedented popularity, mainly among tourists from Russia and the CIS countries.

12* Mae Haad & Koh Maa

This is one of the most popular beaches located in the north of Koh Phangan. Here you can walk along the sandy spit to another island - Koh Ma. If you are looking for a beach on Koh Phangan for families with children, you can consider Mae Had.

The water on Mae Had is clean, transparent, the entrance to the sea is gentle, the depth is insignificant. There is enough housing right on the shore, there are several cafes, a couple of shops. There is nowhere to buy Thai food or fruits. The place is popular, so the prices in the cafe are too high.

The tides are strong, but you can swim in the sea even at low tide. Around Koh Ma you can snorkel or kayak.

Hotels near Mae Had (Koh Koh Phangan)

13 Chaloklum

This is essentially a fishing village, which is famous for its seafood (not cheap, but fresh and tasty).

Average prices for seafood in a cafe Chaloklama:

Grilled fish - 250 - 300 baht
Grilled shrimp – 300 baht serving

The beach on one side is filled with fishing boats, there is a pier. On Chaloklam, the tides are pronounced, even during high tides it is rather shallow. You can swim at the western end of the bay, but it's better to go to the neighboring Malibu beach.

14* Malibu Beach

Not everyone knows that in Chaloklum Bay there is another paradise beach called Malibu. It has a separate entrance. The turn is easy to miss, you need to look for the sign “Malibu Beach Bungalows”, then turn and drive along the sandy path to the stop. There waiting for you White sand, small trees providing shade, hammocks, turquoise water, mountain views.

All infrastructure (cafes, shops, market, fish restaurants) is in the neighboring fishing village Chaloklam. There is only one restaurant on Malibu beach (expensive and tasteless for Tai), hammocks are hung on trees.

Hotels on Malibu Beach

From housing there is only one bungalow complex, called Malibu bungalows. agoda prices 30-70$, and when I was in Malibu and asked the price at the reception, they called 60-100$ so it's best to book online.

Eastern beaches of Koh Phangan

There are several isolated beaches in the southeast and east of Koh Phangan, which can only be reached on foot or by boat for 200-300 baht. I describe them in the order in which they are presented on the map - from south to north.

15 - Haad Yuan- suitable for a quiet holiday. There are bungalows and hotels, but you can only get there on foot (2 hours) or by boat (250 baht). Housing and food prices are high. The beach itself is good: white sand, there are low tides, but they will not interfere with swimming, there are waves in the sea, there are few people.

16 - Haad Tian eats (Haad Thian east) a small isolated cove surrounded by palm trees and bushes. There are several hotels, a good beach, waves in the sea, you can swim all year round. Prices for food and cafes are 2 times higher than the average on Koh Phangan. Boat to Had Rin will cost 300-350 baht

17 - Haad Sadet - steep white sand beach surrounded by tropical jungle. There are several hotels and expensive resorts on the beach, and this is where the infrastructure ends. To this beach, unlike the previous ones, a new concrete road with markings, fences and reflectors leads

There are several more bays between Haad Sadet and Haad Thian, it’s not easy to get to them, but if you want to find silence on Koh Phangan and at least a partial absence of civilization and people, then you eastern beaches in one of the bays. On the northeast civilization begins again and a part of the island inhabited by holidaymakers - the beaches of Thong Nai Pan. The rock divides Thong Nai Pan beach into two bays: Yai and Noah.

18* Thong Nai Pan Yai

Ao Thong Nai Pan Yai- a long beach in a bay in the extreme northeast of Koh Phangan.

Fine white sand, gentle entrance. There are no waves, the sea is knee-deep at the shore. You can move away from the coast of 100 meters - there the sea is up to the chest. There are enough people, but not very many. There are cafes on the beach, there are not only tourist cafes, but also cafes with traditional Thai cuisine.

The town has a hospital branch, an ATM, a macOS, a 7-eleven store, fruit stands. Developed infrastructure. Prices in cafes and shops are 30% higher than in Thongsala.

If you need infrastructure and a bathable sea all year round, you can consider this beach as an alternative. There are low tides here, but you can swim in the sea even at low tide. Good for a beach holiday. There are no parties and no fun.

Koh Phangan hotels on Thong Nai Pan

There are cheap bungalows and several expensive resorts with a closed area, the best of them:

20* Bottle Beach

The road to Bottle Beach is disgusting, but the beach itself is pleasant. It has this bungalow complex and this one for 11$ .

There are several cafes on Bottle Beach, a lot of young people. The tides are almost invisible.

You can choose Bottle Beach for relaxation only if you do not plan to visit other Koh Phangan attractions often. The road from the beach is bad, it can take up to 40 minutes to get to the track. It's scary to go there on a bike. You can easily fall.

My favorite beaches in Koh Phangan

I summed up the results at the very beginning of this article, when I answered the question of which beach to choose. I hope the situation with the beaches of Koh Phangan is now clear to you. It remains only to independently choose a vacation spot on Koh Phangan and prepare for the trip.

List of my favorite beaches:

1. Malibu- You can live in Malibu only in one place, so many people live in other parts of the island, and they come to Malibu to swim and sunbathe. You can eat either in a cafe on the beach, or in the nearby Chaloklum in the fishing village

2.Haad Rin when there are no people there to party. There are also many cafes on Haad Rin, the beach itself is good (when there are few people).

3. Had Leela- you can always run away from Haad Rin

4. Beach of nudists in love

5. Had Salad when there are no tides

6. bottle beach

Dangers on Koh Phangan

1. Motobikes.

90% of people who get on a bike for the first time fall sooner or later. Not on the first day, so in a week.

If you don't drive well or don't know how to drive at all, get yourself an instructor, learn how to drive, and only then get on the road, especially if you plan to drive in the south, east or northwest.

There are hills. Tilt 22 degrees, sharp turns. Be sure to take out medical insurance before your trip. You can read .

2. Wild animals.

If you are traveling to Thailand or Asia in general for the first time, watch videos, films, read about the country. Koh Phangan is an island, 70% of which is jungle and forests, 30% are territories developed by tourism near the sea.

live in Thailand geckos. This is their home. You can watch a video about geckos so as not to be surprised and not write such reviews later:

There was a small gecko in the room. Huge geckos the size of a small cat run on the roof in the morning. They stomp and make sounds like hiccups.

Various sounds interfered at night - rats running and squeaking in the attic ( approx. most likely not rats, but geckos), some unidentified animal that makes terrible sounds, alternating the bleating of a sheep, a toad and a cuckoo. At times it seemed that "it" was screaming right in our room. In general, I wanted to escape the island the very next day.

Paradise beaches and full-flowing seas!

FAQ vacation on Koh Phangan on your own: best beaches, hotels, photo reviews

Phangan, aka Phangan (Kho Phangan) - an island located in the Gulf of Thailand, the area of which is 125 square km. The name of the island has the following origin. Particle "Co" means "Island" and the second part - "Ngan" translates as "sand spit".

The sights of Koh Phangan are plentiful and worthy of enthusiastic attention. The island is located from the mainland at a distance of 56 km, from neighboring islands distance is as follows. Koh Samui is 16 km away from Koh Samui and 35 km from Koh Tao.

As the sun is destined to rise into the sky, as spring is destined to come after winter, so the island of Koh Phangan in connection with its incredible beauty was destined to satisfy tourists who want to relax and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a beautiful oasis.

Koh Phangan and tourism

Remarkably, the tourism business on the island began to function not so long ago, less than thirty years ago. However, in this moment Koh Phangan has become the epicenter of popularity among young Europeans. And all thanks to the opportunity to take part in entertainment events and vibrant parties in the southern part of the island.

This resort is versatile. Because apart from lovers of noise, music and vivid impressions the souls of people who want to indulge in a quiet, blissful rest in the bosom of a peaceful and beautiful nature can also find shelter in it. The second category of tourists can find everything they want in the west and north of the country, full of harmony and exoticism.

Full Moon Party

Koh Phangan in Thailand may differ from other resorts with a unique celebration called Full Moon Party (Full Moon Party) - a delightful celebration held directly in the bosom of nature, hundreds of participants take part in it once.

Events take place monthly in the middle of the night. Any such event is attended by thousands of fans have a nice rest from different parts of the world. Locals say that at the chosen point, the full moon is beautiful and attractive to the greatest extent. The event takes place over 3 nights. The main currents of musical accompaniment are modern styles, under which the young audience loves to break away.

The tradition started in 1985. Today, a pass to the celebration costs 100 baht. These rates are valid for visitors using boats to moor near the venue on the day of the event. People arrive with For all other visitors, the pass to the celebration is free.

Haad Rin Nok beach

The holiday is held inside the territory Haad Rin Nok beach . At your disposal are nightclubs, cozy bars, dance floors, shops where you can buy something to refresh yourself or quench your thirst. The young audience especially likes the plastic cocktail bucket, where fancy combinations of cocktails are created.

Haad Rin beach is full of hotels. But, despite their great number, on the days of parties they are completely occupied by numerous people who want to become part of a wonderful celebration.

We can give good advice: when going on a trip, you need to book a hotel room for a month, or even two, so as not to really spend the whole vacation on the sand. In this area there is transport called songteo - These are cars with a canopy, inside which there are benches on which passengers sit. During festive events, a large number of these pickups are busy transporting tourists. You can ride on such a pickup for 300-600 baht per passenger per direct flight.

Having entered the taste, and not wanting to stop purely within the framework of the Full Moon Party locals introduced a number of other activities:

  • half moon party,
  • black moon party,
  • Jungle Experience, these hangouts are also in demand.

Their difference from Full Moon Party is that they take place in the middle of the island jungle, have special specifics and goals. The time of the events is not the same, so every tourist has the right to visit several parties at the same time. For example, the Jungle Experience takes place one day apart from the Full Moon Party.

If you are a sports lover, you will definitely like it here. Since at this resort there are many chances and options to relax actively and get thrill using water sports sports and entertainment. In the event that you arrived on the island in order to give peace to the soul and delight the eye with beauty, you have at your disposal the wild beauty of virgin nature, deserted beaches that look like a corner of paradise, and a calm, quiet life.
